Description

Oct. 23, 1951 c. w. PHILLIPS 2,572,193
CIGARETTE ROLLING MACHINE Filed June 1, 1948 Inventor Clarence W. Ph/'//ips W mm Patented Oct. 23, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CIGARETTE ROLLING MACHINE Clarence W. Phillips, Akron, Ohio Application June 1, 1948, Serial No. 30,322
and, therefore, the machine adapted for rolling cigarettes of one and the same size in diameter, solely. Cigarette smokers demand cigarettes of difierent sizes, in diameter, for instance, thin, medium, and thick sizes.
With the foregoing in mind, it is the principal object of my invention to equip the above identified type of cigarette rolling machine for rolling cigarettes of difierent diameters, selectively, to meet the requirements of cigarette smokers, and by merely setting the machine for rolling selected sizes, all without materially increasing the manufacturing costs of the machine or complicating the structure or operation thereof.
To the accomplishment of the above and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the'accompanying drawings, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claim appended hereto.
In said drawing:
Figure l is a view in plan of the cigarette rolling machine equipped with my improvements;
Figure 2 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation drawn to a larger scale of the eccentrically mounted roller and the mounting therefor;
Figure 4 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in transverse section, similar to Figure 2, showing the idler roller adjusted into a position to reduce the slack in the web for forming a cigarette of smaller diameter than in Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 showing the idler roller adjusted to further reduce the slack in the web for rolling a cigarette of still smaller diameter.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals, in the cigarette rolling machine with which my improvements are concerned, a cigarette forming roller I on a relatively fixed shaft 2 is rotatable by a knob 3 between parallel end walls 4 1 Claim. (Cl. 131--37) of an open top casing 5 with the ends of the shaft 2 journalled in said end walls. An endless web 6 trained around the cigarette forming roller I is also trained around a remote idler roller 1 and over an intermediate idler roller 8, both rotatable between said end walls 4 parallel with said roller I, The web 6 provides sufiicient slack therein to form between the intermediate idler roller 8 and said roller I an elongated open loop 9 of generally cylindrical form in which the cigarette is rolled. A longitudinal groove I0 is formed in the cigarette forming roller I. With the cigarette forming roller I rotated counterclockwise, as viewed in Figure 2, the slack in the web 6 is adapted to seat in the groove III to form a pocket for filling with tobacco II, and which, upon further rotation of said roller I will form the loop 9 for rolling the tobacco therein. A U- shaped paper supporting member I2 is pivoted on the ends of the shaft 2 for guiding a cigarette paper into the open side of the loop 9, said member being pivoted for swinging toward a bail like moistener pad holder I3 pivoted for swinging" toward said member I2 and forming a U-shaped cigarette paper moistener for moistening one edge of the paper. The cigarette paper I4 is rolled around the tobacco II by operation of the cigarette forming roller I and web 6 and the completed cigarette is ejected from the loop 9 by reverse operation of said roller I and web 6 to bring one edge of the groove I0 into engagement with the loop 9, all in a manner which will be clear.
According to my invention, the remote idler roller 1 is eccentrically mounted for setting into different angular positions to vary the amount of slack in the web 6 and thereby vary the cross sectional size of the loop 9 formed by said slack. To this end, said roller 1 has the form of a tube rotatably fitted around a cylindrical rod I5 fitting endwise between the end walls 4 and having eccentric end studs I6 journalled in said walls 4. The ends of the moistener pad holder I3 are pivoted on said studs I6. One stud I6 is provided with a reduced threaded terminal I! on which is provided a knurled cylindrical nut I8 for turning against an adjacent end of the moistener pad holder I3 to draw and jam one end of said rod I5 against the adjacent end wall 4 and thereby lock said rod I5 and the roller 1 in adjusted position and also to simultaneously clamp one end of said pad holder against said end wall to lock the cigarette paper moistener in adjusted position. The roller 1 and rod I5 are adjusted into different angular positions by merely graspw ing the same with the fingers positioned against the web 6 covering said roller 1. As will be understood, when the rod i5 is locked the roller 1 is freely rotatable thereon.
As will be manifest, in different set adjustments of the roller 1, the rod IS, the slack in the web 6 will be adjusted correspondingly so that loops 9 of different sizes will be formed by the slack in the web 6 to roll cigarettes of difierent diameters, "and a wide range of fiifierent sizes of cigarettes may be obtained selectively by means of the simple improvement described.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention witm out further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is-susceptible of modification, withoutdepartingfmm the inventive concept, and right is hereinreserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended :e'laim.
. QI-Idl'ingfiBSCiibGd my invention, whatzis claim'e'd as "new is:
In a cigarette machine of the type h'aving'an endless cigarette rolling web running with a slack ,ona cigarette forming'rolle'r, zthe combination of a casing having'endwalls for supporting S'aid r o'ller, a U -shaped= cigaretteip'aper moistener, a cylindrical r od extending tbetween said 'end walls of the casing and having rotatably fitted thereon a tube around which the Web is trained, eccentric end studs on said rod journaled in said end walls whereby said rod and tube are angularly adjustable to vary the slack in said web, said studs having the ends of said moistener swingably mounted thereon for adjustment of said moistener into different angular positions, and a knurled annular nut threaded on one of said studs 'for turning za'gainst zone end of the moistener to clamp the same against one end wall of the casing and simultaneously clamp one end of the rod against said end wall of the easing, whereby to lock said rod and moistener in adjusted position.
