Gear 39 has a circumferential flange 42 which may be provided with a scale marked in degrees. The upper end of shaft 4| is supported in a bracket 43, which is fastened to plate I4, and shaft 4| projects downwardly through openings in a stationary cam 80, plate I4 and stationary cam Ill. The cams 88 and I are secured to plate I-4 and will be hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to Fig. 2, it willbe seen that the gear wheel 39 has a number of spokes and that a link 41 is pivotally connected atone end to one of the spokes of gear 39 and pivotally connected at its other end by a pin I to'a link 49. The link 49 is pivotally connected to a lug 5| on a collar 53 which is loosely mounted on a sleeve 55 keyed to the shaft 4| (Fig. 5). Above collar 53 is mounted an arm 51 having a hub secured on sleeve 55 by a set screw 58 shown in Fig. 5. Collar 53 has another lug 59 provided with an elongated slot 60 through which passes a screw 8| which is threaded into an arm 63 integral with the portion of sleeve 55 below collar 53 (see Fig. 5).
In the outer end of arm 51 is slidably mounted a vertical lock pin 65 which is urged upwardly by a compression spring mounted on pin 65 and seated on arm 51 to engage the head of pin 65 and therebyurge it upwardly. On the outer end of arm 63 is slidably mounted a vertical lockpin I0 which is urged upwardly by a compression spring I2 seated in a socket in arm 83 and engaging the head of pin I0 (Fig. 3)
The pin I5 pivotally connecting links 41 and 49 carries on its lower end a cam roller 11 engaging a-cam track I9 in the cam 80.
On the lower end of the shaft 4| is clamped the hub of a hollow arm 82 which is pivotally connected to a hollow arm 84. "In the outer end of arm 84 is formed a bearing in which is revolubly supported an annular hub formed on a holder 86. A wrapper carrier 88 is secured to holder 86. The wrapper carrier 88 is connected to a source of suction through the arms 82 and 84 and ports (not shown) in shaft 4|. The upper end of shaft 4| is connected by a pipe 4|a (Figs. 1, 2 and 5) to a suitable source of suction. Pipe 4Ia communicates with an opening in a plate 4Ib secured to bracket 43 and closing the upper end of shaft 4|. Carrier 88 is provided with a perforated bottom whereby a wrapper will adhere thereto when suction is applied to the wrapper carrier. Holder 88 is retained in its bearing in arm 84 by a shaft (not shown) which is fully described in Wheeler Patent 2,215,490 and has a portion projecting upwardly from arm 84 and having secured thereon a cam piece 89 carrying a cam roller 90. On the outer end of arm 84 is formed an integral extension 92 which carries a cam roller 94.
The cam rollers 90 and 94 respectively engage cam tracks 98 and 98 of the stationary cam I00. Reference ma be had to the co-pending application of J. F. Halstead, S. N. 583,875, now
Patent 2,471,389, for a complete disclosure of the tracks 96 and 98 and the cam piece 89. The
track 96 is interrupted or non-continuous, and
the track 98 has the proper contour to guide the arm 84 in a predetermined path while the track 96 swings the wrapper carrier 88 to the proper angle for applying the wrapper to the particular shape of cigar for which the cam I00 is designed. Cam piece 89 is provided with slot I02 in one end thereof and a track I04 in its outer face. At proper points intermediate the ends of track 96 the cam I00 is provided with studs on which rollers I06 and I08 are mounted. The roller I00 enters slot I02 in piece 89 while wrapper carrier 88 is returning to its wrapper-receiving position. When roller I06 enters the slot I02 it causes the wrapper carrier 88 to make a fraction of a turn and assume the position in Fig. 4 wherein the wrapper carrier overlies the wrapper-cutting bed W and the slot I02 is aboutjto leave roller I08 while roller I08 enters track I04. A wrapper is cut by cutting rollers (not shown) from leaf tobacco manually positioned on the die of the wrapper cutting bed before the wrapper carrier assumes the position shown in Fig. 4. The construction of the wrapper cutting bed and cutting rollers is full described in Wheeler Patents 2,215,490, 2,316,828 and 2,343,946. When the suction head L of the wrapper cutting bed is raised to transfer the cut Wrapper to the wrapper carrier 88 (Fig. 1) while the latter dwells over the Wrapper cutting bed, the suction on the suction head L-is cut off 'and suction applied to the wrapper" carrier at the moment the wrapper contacts'the bottom of the wrapper carrier. Thus the wrapper will adhere to the wrapper carrier bottom and the carrier will be moved to a wrapper-pasting position indicatedin dotted lines in Fig. 4 at which paste is applied to the flag end'of the wrapper by a paster deviceP of conventional construction. The tuck end of the pasted wrapper is then stripped from the carrier by a tuck needle T of conventional construction whichenters a notch I|0 in'the'wrapper carrier (Fig.1) and presses the tuck "end' of 'thewrapper against the tuck end of a cigar bunch (not shown) revolving in the wrapperapplying mechanism M to cause the wrapper to be s irally wound about said cigar bunch.
It will be understood that the shaft 4| will turn at different speeds at different positions of the carrier in each cycle of the machine and that the movement of the wrapper carrier is cyclically interrupted at the wrapper-receiving and wrapper-pasting positions. For this purpose "the track I9 of cam has a predetermined configuration to displace the cam roller 11, while the carrier is at wrapper-receiving and pasting positions; and thereby cause the link 49 to turn' the collar 53 withthe shaft 4| in adirection opposite to the direction in which the shaft 4| is being turned due to the connection of link 41 to a spoke of gear wheel 39, and at a speed sufficient to cause the rotation of shaft 4| to be interrupted while the wrapper carrier is at wrapper-receiving and pasting positions. For this purpose the cam track I9 is provided with sections 19a. and 19b (Fig. 2) which are concentric with the center of the pin connecting the link 49 to the lug 5| of collar 53. Cam track sections 19a and 19b thus have the shape required to produce a dwell in the motion of the wrapper carrier 88 at the wrapper-receiving and wrapper-pasting positions thereof. Thus 'the wrapper carrier will remain stationary at these two positions.
The track I9 of cam 80 is also provided with eccentric portions I90, 19d and 'I9e which cause the cam roller II to displace link 49 and turn the collar 53 and thereby turn the shaft 4| to advance Or retard the speed of rotation of shaft 4| relative to the rotation of gear 39, as required at different positions of the wrapper carrier. At sections 19a and 19b of the track I9, where the speed of the reverse motion of shaft 4| is equalto the angular velocity of the for- Ward motion of gear 39, the shaft 4| will regear 202. Gear 202 is connected through a separable coupling 204 with the drive shaft 206 of wrapper-applying mechanism M whose construction 'is' fully described in the, Burning Patent 2,290,171. Thus the wrapper-applying mech-a-' nism is directly driven from the shaft l2 in timed relation to the operation of the wrapper transfer mechanism. v
It may be observed that when the wrapper carrier is locked at wrapper-pasting position while the needle T is being inserted into the notch H in the wrapper carrier, there is no possibility of the carrier being displaced. Therefore'the're is no possibility of breaking the needle, as is the case when the carrier is not locked at this position.
It should be mentioned that suitable mechanism for operating the needle T is shownand 'described in the above-mentioned Durning Patent 2,290,171 and also in the Clausen I Patent 2,281,095. For further disclosure of a suitable type of paster mechanism for applying paste to the flag end of the-wrapper on the carrier, reference may be had to the Shedlock Patent 863,106.
In the operation of my wrapper transfer the carrier dwells'at said wrapper-receiving position wrapper carrier 88 dwells at the wrapper-receiving position shown in the drawings while 1 the wrapper is. delivered thereto from', the suction head L of the wrapper-cutting bed W. The wrapper is suctionally retained on the bottom of the wrapper carrier, when the shaft 4| resumes its rotation. The wrapper is thus transported to the wrapper-pasting position. At this position of the wrapper. carrier its movement is again interrupted while the rotation of the shaft 4| is stopped, and paste is applied by the device P to the head end of the wrapper adhering to the wrapper carrier. The tuck end of said wrapper is removed from the wrapper carrier by thetuck needle T and pressed against the tuck end'of the cigar bunch in the wrapper-applying mechanism M. The wrapper carrier then resumes its motion and the remainder of the wrapper. isremoved therefrom and wound spirally about the revolving cigar bunch in the wrapper-applying mechanism M. After the wrapper is applied to said cigar bunch the wrapper carrier returns to the'wrapper-receiving position at which it dwells to receive another wrapper from the suction head L of the wrapper-cutting bed W.
While the wrapper carrier dwells at the wrapper-receiving position the locking pin 10 is inserted in the hole I50 of cam 80 to prevent rotation of shaft 4| and thereby prevent movement of the wrapper carrier at this position. When the wrapper carrier dwells at wrapper-pasting position the locking pin 65 is inserted into hole I50 to prevent movement of the wrapper carrier.
What is claimed is:
1. In a cigar machine having mechanism for applying a wrapper to a cigar bunch, the combination with a wrapper carrier adapted to support a wrapper, of means for moving said carrier from a wrapper-receiving position to a wrapper-pasting position adjacent said wrapper-applying mechanism and then returning said carrier to wrapper-receiving position througha predetermined path along said wrapper-applying mechanism to permit application of the wrapper on said carrier to a cigar bunch in said wrapperapplying mechanism, said carrier moving means operating to' stop said carrier momentarily at said wrapper-receiving and wrapper-pasting positions and including a rotatable member to which said carrier is connected, and a device for and at wrapper-pasting position, andinstrumentalities for inserting each of said'detent's successively into said recess while said carrier dwells at wrapper-receiving and wrapper-pasting posi, tions. In a cigar machine having mechanism for applying a wrapper to a cigar bunch, the combination witha wrappercarrier adapted to support a wrapper, of means for moving said carrier from a wrapper-receiving position to a wrapper-pasting' position adjacent said wrapper-applying mechanism and'then returning said carrier "to wrapper-receiving position through a predetermine'd'path along said wrapper-applying mechanism to permit 'application'of the wrapper on said carrier to a cigar bunch in said wrapper-applying mechanism, said carrier moving means operating to stop said carrier momentarily at said Wrapper-receiving position and said wrapperpasting position,and said carrier moving means including a vertical shaft, a primary arm fastened on said shaft and a secondary arm connected to said primary arm, said carrier beingmounted in said secondary arm, and a driving mechanism connected to said shaft, said driving mechanism including a stationary, cam, a link engaging said cam, a'sleeve attached to saidshaft, a collar loosely mounted'on said sleeve, means attaching said collar to said sleeve in a predetermined' adjusted position to permit variation of the wrapper-pasting position of saidcarrier, and a link connecting said first-named link to said collar.
3. In a. cigar machine having mechanism for applying a wrapper to a cigar bunch, the combination with a wrapper carrier adapted to support a'wrapper, of means for moving said carrier from a wrapper-receiving position to a wrapper-pasting positionadjacent said wrapperapplying mechanism and then returning said carrier to wrapper-receiving position through a predetermined path along .said wrapper-applying mechanism to permit application of the wrapper on said carrier to a cigar bunch in said wrap per-applying mechanism, said means operating to stop said carrier momentarily at said wrappera receiving position and said wrapper-pasting position, said carrier moving means including a vertical shaft, a primary arm fastened on said shaft and a secondaryarm connected'to said primary arm, said carrier being mounted in said secondary arm, a driven member mounted on said shaft, and a driving mechanism connected to saiddriven member, said driving mechanism including a stationary cam, a rotating driving member concentric with said shaft, a primary link pivotally connected to said driving memher, a secondary link pivotally connected to said driven member, a pin pivotally connecting said links, and a cam follower on said pin, said cam having a cam track engaging said cam follower, and said cam track having a configuration adapted to interrupt the rotation of said driven member and thereby momentarily stop the rotation of said shaft and cause said carrier to dwell at the wrapper-receiving position and at the wrapper-pasting position thereof.
4. In a cigar machine having mechanism for applying a wrapper to a cigar bunch, the combination with a wrapper carrier adapted to support a wrapper, of means for moving said carrier from a wrapper-receiving position to a wrapper-pasting position adjacent said wrapper-applying mechanism and then returning said carrier to wrapper-receiving position through a predetermined path along said wrapper-applying mechanism to permit application of the wrapper on said carrier to a cigar bunch in said wrapper-applying mechanism, said means operating to stop said carrier momentarily at said wrapperreceiving position and said wrapper-pasting position, said carrier moving means including a vertical shaft, driven mechanism including a driven member mounted on said shaft, and a driving mechanism connected to said driven member, said driving mechanism including a stationary cam, a rotating driving member concentric with said shaft, a primary link pivotally connected to said driving member, a secondary link pivotally connected to said driven member and primary link, said driven member being rotatably adjustable relative to said shaft and having a lug provided with an elongated slot, and said driven mechanism also including a connecting member rigidly connected to said shaft, and a screw passing through said slot and threaded into said connecting member to rigidly connect said driven member to said connecting member and thereby revolve said shaft with said driven member whereby upon loosening said screw said driven member may be turned for adjustment relative to said connecting member.
5. In a cigar machine having mechanism for applying a wrapper to a cigar bunch, the combination with a wrapper carrier adapted to sup port a wrapper, of means for moving said carrier from a wrapper-receiving position to a wrapper-pasting position adjacent said wrapper-applying mechanism and then returning said carrier to wrapper-receiving position through a predetermined path along said wrapper-applying mechanism to permit application of the wrapper on said carrier to a cigar bunch in said wrapperapplying mechanism, said means operating to stop said carrier momentarily at said wrapperreceiving position and said wrapper-pasting position, said carrier moving means including a vertical shaft, a primary arm fastened on said shaft and a secondary arm connected to said primary arm, said carrier being mounted in said secondary arm, a driven member mounted on said shaft, a driving mechanism connected to said driven member, and a continuously rotating driving applying a wrapper to a cigar bunch, the combination with a wrapper carrier adapted to support a wrapper, of means for moving said wrapper carrier from a wrapper-receiving position to a wrapper-pasting position adjacent said wrapper-applying mechanism and then returning said carrier to wrapper-receiving position, said means operating to stop said carrier momentarily at said wrapper-receiving and wrapper-pasting positions and then return said carrier to wrapper-receiving position through a predetermined path along said wrapper-applying mechanism to permit application of the wrapper on said carrier to a cigar bunch in said mechanism, said carrier moving means including a vertical shaft, a primary arm connected to said shaft, a secondary arm pivotally connected to said primary arm, said carrier being mounted in said secondary arm, and a driving mechanism for revolving said shaft, said driving mechanism including a continuously revolving member, a primary link pivotally connected to said continuously revolving member, a secondary link, a pin pivotally connecting said primary and secondary links, a driven member pivotally connected to said secondary link and driving said shaft, a cam follower on said pin, and a stationary cam having a cam track engaging said cam follower, said track having a predetermined configuration to interrupt the rotation of said driven member and thereby stop said carrier momentarily at wrapper-receiving position and at wrapperpasting position.
