book opened to the desired page is not readily possible. Particular reference is made to binders or files for the storage of inactive prescriptions used by pharmacists. In files or binders in this field, the holding of the file open to a pre determined prescription or page, while leaving the hands free for compounding the prescription, is impossible and it is accordingly an object of my invention, in one embodiment thereof, to'

provide a page holding device for a book comprising a prescription file which may be readily applied in position quickly, to hold the prescription file or book open for inspection of a predetermined page.

Still more particularly, it is an object of my invention to provide a page holding device for a book, such as a prescription file, in which the binding thereof cooperates with a prop whereby the page prop is held in position and coordinately combines to balance a divided stack in the propped position for ready inspection of the page, freeing the hands.

Still further objects of my invention reside in the provision of a combined file and page hold-,

ving device wherein simply shaped wire coordinately combines the parts thereof to compact and hold a file or book closed, or may be converted to a page prop, to hold the bound pages open to any predetermined leaf, to simplify reading of this page without the use of the hands.

Still further, it is an object of my invention to provide a page holding device for loose leaf books or like files in which the binding means for the pages cooperate with a resilient member carrying a prop to hold the prop in position, without injury'to the pages, while effectively dividing the stack of pages for ready inspection.

Still further, it is an object of my invention to provide a page holding device for books, files, binders, which my be made inexpensively, while eifectively serving its intended purpose.

To attain these objects and such further objects as may appear herein, or be hereinafter pointed out, I make reference to the accompany- 2'Cla ims. (01. 281-42) "scriptions in looseleaf fashion.

Making reference to the drawing, for purposes of illustration, I have shown a form of prescription file I0, having cover members and I2, hinged to a panel l3 along the usual hinge lines i4 and 15. The panel I3 on its inner surface supports binding means [-6.

In accordance with my invention, I provide a page holding device 2| which is drawn from spring wire and comprises branches 22 and 23, joined by the coil 24 resiliently to urge the arms with relation to each other outwardly. The arms 22, 23 terminate at their ends 25 and 25 with hooked fingers 27 and 28, respectively. The arms 22 and 23 are guided in a single plane transverse to the axis of the loop 24. Along the length of the arms 22 and 23 and in a plane substantially in parallelism to the axis through the coil 24; I provide props 29 and 30, made by folding the wire of which the branches are made to provide loops 3| and 32, outlining the propping ends between the connecting arm 33.

With a prop of the character described, the stack 20 may bedivided at any page-which it is desired to inspect, as for refilling a prescription,

in the case'of a prescription file, thus providing ,an overlying stack portion 20a. In this posimay be associated with any binding means, I may, in a more particular embodiment of my invention, employ the same as in permanent association with the file or book, more compactly to draw the covers II and I2 toward each other and restrain the bulking action of the stack of prescriptions. For this purpose, I provide eyelets 34 and 35, attached to the cover l2 by rivetting or other suitable means. The eyelets are spaced apart from each other within the limits of distension of the arms 22 and 23 so that by pinching the arms toward each other, the hooks 21 and 28 may be guided into the eyelets 34 and 35, to hold the prop 2| assembled with the cover I2. The cover II, in a complementary position to the eyelets, is provided with a hook 36, riveted thereto. The branches 22 and :23 are of a length substantially equidistant to the panel l3, whereby, upon folding the covers H and toward each other as .shown in Figure 1, the coil '24 maybe hooked onto the hook '36 to hold the covers II and |2 in parallelism. In this position, a stack of pages, such as prescriptions, .of great thickness may be bound compactly.

It will be observed that while in the exemplified form of my invention I may provide a prop having prop supporting arms closely positioned to each other so that they may be grasped by the fingers of one hand, it will be understood that where the binding means may involve posts widely spaced from each. other, I may apply the principle of my invention to larger books or files in which the binding means is spaced at greater "distances.

In Figure 4 I have illustrated a prop 2|a in which prop arms 22a and 230, are formed substantially identically with the prior embodiment and are joined to the spacer section 31 by a pair of coils 38 and 39. The spacer section 31 is of "a length to space the coils 38 and 39 :approximately equivalent to the space between the posts 40, 40,-which may be of more extended size, such as a two ring binder ledger or other bookkeeping device, the hook fingers 4| and 42 being of a length commensurate with the thickness of the - posts 40, 40 to prevent displacement.

and 2311 are distended resiliently in a direction from each other, in which case the fingers 4| and 42 may point away from each other, so that the arms 22a and 23a must'be drawn toward each other to hook the fingers 4| and 42 betweenthe pages of the stack and the posts 40, 40, as in the prior embodiment.

The divided stack maintains the prop between the same whereas the resilient action of the hooked fingers with relation to each other against the post or binding means holds the props from being pinched outwardly.

It will be understood that while in the preferred embodiment, the arms 22, 23, and 22a, 23a are normally resiliently urged-away-from each other,

28 and 4|, 42 engage other portions of the binding means and likewise resiliently urge the arms so that they normally are in close proximity to each other and would require movement from each other against the normal resilient pressure of these arms so as to engage the binding means by releasing the arms to move toward each other.

While I have shown and described the arms resiliently urged relatively to each other by the employment of drawn spring wire, it will be understood that fiat spring steel may be employed and that merely a change in size is required to '-adapt the prop to take care of the weight and dimensions of the hook or file with which the prop is to be used.

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, which I claim as new and desire to secure :by LettersPatent, is:
