This invention relates to a drum mounting, and particularly to a hoist or winch drum mounting employing livev shaft;
It is an object of the invention to construct a hoist drum mounted on a stub shaft or other live shafts.
It is a further object of the invention to apply the driving force directly to the drum with the stub shaft acting primarily as an axle.
It is a. further` object of the invention to provide for selectively connecting and disconnecting the drum from the Adriving means so that the drum may be driven by the driving means or may operate as ay free-wheeling drum.
It is a further object of the invention to construct such va. drum device in which a watercooled air or hydraulic operated clutch is employed as the means for connecting the drum to the drivingl means, and particularly one in which the air or hydraulic pressure is applied at the axis of the drum axle. y
It is a further object of the invention to construct a drum shaft mounting in which independent bearing systems are used, for example, two
independent bearing systems, one of which, lo-A cated at the driven end of the drum, takes substantially the entire rotational load when the drum is driven, with the second system. also located at the driven end of the druml taking substantially only the static loads when the drum is driven.
It is a further object of the invention to construct Vthe drum in a simple and light-weight manner with simple and independently replaceable end shaft constructions and mounting, and which may be driven at dierentspeeds by hilow" drives at the ends of the drum.
These and other objects will be apparent from the further description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, taken together with the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan assembly view of the drum of the invention; and

When mounted for operation the sprocket I0 of ends A and B are each always connected to the source of motive power and in rotation loads may be instantaneously transferred from end A to end B to drive the drum selectively at two different speeds by merely throwing a valve to transfer the air pressure from one clutch to the other.
Since both ends A and B. are similarly constructed only the end A will be described.
The drum I is bolted to the drumy flange l which is formed with a hub 5. Positioned in hub 5 is the stub shaft 6 held in place, by the draw bolt 1, against the end of the hub 5 by means of a shoulder 6'. Bearings 8 and 9 are mounted longitudinally spaced on the stub shaft 6. While ball bearings are shown, other types of roller bearings may be employed.
The sprocket disc III upon which sprocket IU is boltedis` formed with the hub II which is bolted to the stirrup I2 by bolts I3. The bearings 8 and 9 are held in place by the hub II and stirrup I2 against shoulders suitably formed in the shaft 6. shaft E so that the shaft is not in driving or frictional contact at the opposing surfaces of II and I2 under any condition of loading.
Mounted exteriorly of the stirrup I2 and retained by shoulders formed in the stirrup I2 and on the sprocket disc III is a thrust roller bearing I5. The pillow block I6 is mounted on the bearing I5. The bearing I5 is restrained by ring IB' on one end (A) and not restrained by a ring I6 on the other end. This permits movement due to expansion thereof, imposing no thrust load on l5 as a result of such expansion. Lubrication passageways I5' are provided connecting the bearings I5, 8 and 9 so that one shot lubrication, through a connection not shown, to the bearing I5 will also lubricate the bearings 8 and 9. Rotary seals I1 retained by ring I8 and other like rotary seals I1 are positioned between the pillow block and the sprocket Idisc Ill, end cap Il, and also between Vthe stirrup I2 and retaining ring I8 mounted on the pillow block I6. These, in cooperation with the closure I9 mounted at the end of the drum shaft and bearing assembly, act to contain the lubricant.

Air is admitted under pressure to the bore system by a line II passing through the pillow block and connected to the rotary air seal 31 mounted in the bore 2|.
The clutch is constructed to be air-operated as follows. A housing 26, coaxial with the shaft. is bolted to the sprocket disc II. The housing holds an inflatable pneumatic tube 21 on which is positioned a clutch pressure plate 2l. A plurality of leaf springs 2s are positioned in uniform spacing around the periphery of the plate II and held in place in holes formed in the sides of the housing 26. Upon application of air pressure through II the tube 21 expands. thusforcing the split plate II to expand and forcing the spring ZI to expand the split clutch plate II against the inner face of the plate I2.

Referring tothjecondition in end B. the clutch is disengaged 'so that the end B is in free-wheeling condition. i. e.. the sprocket disc II of end B is disengaged from` the rotating drum. -The stub shaft I of end B rotates at the R. P. M. of the drum. Sincethe sprocket at end B is of smaller diameter and rotates at a higher R.. P. The end to be btained is to drive the end sprockets at dii! rent speeds. The bearings I and I of end B thus rotate and are not stationaryas in ,the caseof the same bearings in end A when the end A is driven.
The'condition described vabove also exists in similar manner when the power is applied to end B by clutching at end B and declutching at end A. This can be done almost instantaneously by a valve (not shown) in line II.

This is alsoaided byplacing the bearing II between the bearings I and I and making the bearing II of a greater diameter than I' and I. This places bearing II exteriorly of the stirrup I2. This divides the radial loads'between I and I and transfers the loads to II. In many uses. as. for instance, .in drums .mounted on trucks and tractors;v the 'space between the supportfor the pillow biockand the end of the drum shaft is limited and it is necessary to have as compact an arrangement as posalso permit forthe axial application'of the air pressure 'for actuation of the clutch. The closure member II is mounted so as torotate with the hub II. The stirrup and sprocket hubjarrangev ment provide for air passagewaysto permit of 5 the application of the air pressure to the tube 25. By positioning the rotor seal Il at the axis of 1. s

-The rotor seal I1 is shown in'section 3. The tube IIarotates inside the housing of 31.
The shoulder'II is spaced from the shoulder.
The ball race Il is slidably mounted in I'I against I 4a thrust ring Il. A like bali race II is-slidably mounted in Il against a thrust ring 4I and cover 45. The tube I1 has bores II for admission of air and carries by a shrink t the balirace 4I retained against a ring I1 mounted in Ila'. `vThe ball race 4I is carried. by a shrink fit on tube Ila against the shoulder 50. Leather washer 5i or similar packing is mountedin tube 31a by means of springs 52 and operate in housings 5I. The packed oi! areain I1 issmail and the peripheral speed of the packed off surface of 31a is relatively low, and therefore it can hold the necessary high air pressures notwithstanding the relatively high speed at which the drum rotates. The special arrangement of the hub i I to be mounted on the two bearing systems I5 and 8 and 9 makes possible the establishment of an air passageway between 31 and 25.
By the use of the bearing systems described above we are enabled to apply the air pressure for actuation of the air clutch axially of the drum shaft and provide communication between this axially applied air pressure and the clutch.
This construction also avoids the necessity for employing a shaft passing entirely through the drum. In such forms. both when the power isapplied to the shaft and when applied to the drum, the portion of the shaft positioned inside the drum adds weight and little strength to the drum. We have thus clieapened and simplified the construction in this respect.
Variations of the above design will be apparent to those skilled in the art. For example, the sprocket may be replaced by a gear or pulley and the air clutch replaced by an oil-operated or mechanically operated clutch.
While we have described a particular embodiment of vthe invention for the purpose of illustration, it should be understood that various modifications and adaptations thereof may be made within the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
We claim:
l. A drum assembly comprising a drum, a shaft, said drum being mounted on said shaft, a sprocket. a hub for said sprocket. axially mounted on said shaft, a clutch for connecting the drum and said shaft to said sprocket, an end support for said shaft, a bearing assembly between said shaft and said support, said bearing assembly comprising bearings between said sprocket hub and said support for transferring rotational loads from said sprocket to said support. other bearing positioned between said sprocket and said shaft, said bearings being positioned in series load-transfer relation with said shaft, said load-transfer .relation including in sequence second-mentioned bearings, said hub and said first-mentioned bearings and said support.
2. A drum assembly comprising a drum, a drum flange connected to said drum, a shaft on which said drum and drum flange are mounted, a hub positioned axially of said shaft and spaced therefrom, a sprocket mounted in driving connection on said hub, a clutch between said sprocket and said drum flange, bearings positioned between the interior surface of said hub and the exterior of said shaft, a pillow block support for said shaft and bearing assembly, and a second bearing mounted on the exterior of said hub and between said hub and said pillow block, said bearings being positioned in series load-transfer relation with said shaft, said load-transfer relation including in sequence second-mentioned bearings. first-mentioned bearings, and said pillow block support. l

A drum assembly, comprising a drum and drum ends, a shaft assembly on each end of said drum, said shaft assembly at each end of said drum comprising a drum flange connected to said drum, a shaft on which said drum and drum flange are mounted, a hub positioned axially of said shaft and spaced therefrom, a sprocket mounted in driving connection on said hub. a
6 clutch between said sprocket and said drum flange, bearings positioned between the interior surface of said hub and the exterior of said shaft. a pillow block support for said shaft and bearing assembly, a second bearing mounted on the exterior of said hub and between said hub and said pillow block, and means for driving said sprockets at dierent speeds.
4. A drum assembly comprising a drum. a shaft, said drum being mounted on said shaft. a sprocket axially mounted on said shaft, a uidoperated clutch for connecting the drum and said shaft to said sprocket, an end support for said shaft, a bearing assembly between said shaft and said support, said bearing assembly comprising bearings between said sprocket mounting on said shaft and said support for transferring rotational loads from said sprocket to said support, other bearings positioned between' said sprocket and said shaft. said bearings being positioned in series load-transfer relation with said shaft, said load-transfer series relation including in sequence said second-mentioned bearings and said first-mentioned bearings and said support, a fluid-pressure connection positioned on said support. axially of said shaft, a fluid passageway through said sprocket mounting on said shaft,
and a uid connection between said last-named passageway and said clutch.
5. A drum assembly comprising a drum, a drum flange connected to said drum, a shaft on which said drum and drum flange are mounted, a hub positioned axially of said shaft and spaced therefrom. a sprocket mounted in driving connection on said hub, a fluid-operated clutch-between said sprocket and said drum flange, bearings positioned between the interior surface of said hub and the exterior of said shaft, a pillowl block support for said shaft and bearings, a second bearing mounted on the exterior of said hub and between said hub and said pillow block, a closure at the end of said shaft and connected to said hub. enclosing said first-mentioned bearings, an air inlet mounted in said closure and axially of said shaft, a conduit in said hub and connected to said air inlet. and a fluid conduit connecting said hub conduit and said clutch.
6, A drum assembly comprising a drum, a drum flange connected to said drum, a shaft, said drum flange kbeing mounted on said shaft. a sprocket disc and hub mounted for rotation on said shaft, a clutch air-pressure chamber mounted on said disc. a clutch plate mounted on said air-pressure chamber with its clutch face parallel to the axis of said shaft, a clutch ring mounted on said drum flange parallel to said clutch plate and in clutchengaging relation with said clutch plate, an air inlet passageway positioned axially of said shaft, an air connection between said sprocket disc and said air-pressure chamber, and an air passageway connecting said inlet passageway and said air connection and mounted to rotate with said sprocket disc.
7. A drum assembly comprising a drum, a drum flange connected to said drum, a shaft, said drum flange being mounted on said shaft, a sprocket disc and hub mounted for rotation on said shaft, a clutch air-pressure chamber mounted on said disc, a clutch plate mounted on said air-pressure chamber with its clutch face parallel to the axis of said shaft, a clutch ring mounted on said drum flange parallel to said clutch plate and in clutch-engaging relation with said clutch plate, an air inlet passageway positioned axially of said shaft, an air connection between said 7 sprocket disc and said air-pressure chamber, anair passageway connecting said inlet passageway and said air connection and mounted to rotate with said sprocket disc. and a brake flange mounted on said drum flange and spaced from said clutch ring.
8. A drum assembly comprising a drum. a drum shaft, said drum being mounted on said ldrum shaft, a drum ange connected to said drum. a hub positioned axially of said shaft and spaced therefrom, a sprocket mounted in driving connection on said hub, a clutch between said sprocket and said drum flange, bearings'lpositioned between the interior surface of said' hub and the exterior of said shaft, a pillow block support for said shaft and bearing assembly, and a second bearing mounted on the exterior of said hub and between said hub and said pillow block.
9. A drum assembly comprising a drum, a shaft. said drum being mounted on said shaft, a sprocket axially mounted on said shaft, a clutch for connecting the drum and said shaft to said sprocket, an end support for said shaft, a bearing assembly between said shaft and said support,
