Description

UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFIGEQ SMITH A. BATSON, or BATsoNs sronn, 'rmaunssnn.
CU LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,455, dated April 18, 1882.
Application filed February 18, 1882. (No model.) 4
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SMITH A. BATSON, of
Batsons Store, in the county of Dixon and in gs, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of my improved cultivator, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to plows for crossbreaking land and for cultivating youngcrops of corn, cotton, tobacco, and the like; and it consists in the improved construction and arran gement of parts, which. will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent the outer and B B the inner beams, all of which are curved or bent at their rear ends so as to form the standards 0, carrying the plowblades 1), which should be detachable, so that they may be interchanged from one side to the other, and thus throw the dirt either inward or outward, as desired. The beams B are each made in two parts or pieces hinged together by means of bolts B, so that their rear ends, comprising the standards 0, may be raised to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l'of the drawings when the plows are out of the ground. The front ends of the beams B are rigidly connected to beams A, rods E being interposed in order to space them sufficiently. Upon these rods are placed coiled springs F, which assist in spacing the beams.
G G are the handles, which are bolted or otherwise firmly secured to the front ends of the beams B, braces H being provided in or- When the said rear ends of beams B are lowered for operation they are to be rigidly connected to the frontends by means of removathat they may be raised or lowered in relation to each other, and thus be enabled to work independently. A block or washer, L, is interposed between beams A A upon the bolt K, for the purpose of spacing the beams. A clevis, M,-is also attached to the bolt K, for the at- C0 tachment of the draft.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my improved plow consists of two parts, each of which comprises a beam, A, beam B, and hanple G. The said parts or sections are con- 6 5 nected, besides the bolt K, bya link, N, which enables themto be manipulated independently of each other.
The plow-blades D upon the standards 0 of beams B may be provided upon their inner 7o edges with fenders O, for the purpose of preventing clods, rocks, &c., from rolling over upon the young plants being cultivated.
' From the foregoingdescription, takenin connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the 7 5 operation of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, inexpensive, convenient, easily manipulated, and may be used effl- .front ends attached to said outer beams, A,
and the handles Gr, having books I, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as go my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SMITH A. BATSON.
