` GOU-TERB-ALANGE POR EXTENSION (HEIANDELIERS'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WOLOOTT A. HULL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE ANSONIA BRASS AND COPPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
COUNTER-BALANCE FOR EXTENSION-CHANDELIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,323, dated April 11, 1882.
Applieationvled January 26,'1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WOLCOTT A. HULL, of New York, in the county and -State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvementsin Counter-Balances for Extension-Chandeliers, of which the following is a specification.
Weights for counterbalancing the extensible or movable part of an extension-chande- Io lier have very commonly been made of cast 'metal and drilled to form a hole for fitting on its guide-rod. rlhese weights are expensive to manufacture, and it is the object of myinvention to simplify and cheapen the manufacture of them. A
To this end my invention consists in a couliterbalancing-weight made of a number of pieces with cavities which, when put together, forni a hole suitable forsurrounding a guiderod.'
The invention fuither consists in the combination, with acounterbalancing-weight made in sections having cavities forming a hole for surrounding a guide-rod, of a shell inclosing said sections, and having its upper and lower edges turned inward, so as to tit-the guiderod. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a counterbalancing- 3o weight embodying my invention and made in two parts. Fig.2isa sectional view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken Ona plane perpendicular to the plane of the sectional view, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view ot' ,35 one of the sections composing the weight.

Av designates a connterbalancing weight, made of two sections of cast-.iron or other suit- .49 able metal, and each having a cavity, a. When these two sections are put together their two cavities form a round hole, which is adapted to surround a guide-rod. Preferably the opposite faces, b, of the sections are slightly con caved, so that they will lit snugly together at the edges.
B designates a shell of brass or other ornamental metal,whicl1 incloses the sections of the weight A and secures them together.v
A5o This shell is composed of twoparts, which are connected together transversely to the meeting faces ot the sections of the weight. They are connected by folding or creasing their meeting edges together. The upper and lower edges of this shell are turned in, as at d, so that they will tit a guide-rod snugly. The upper portion of the shell is also provided with a neck, c, which may be spun up and have its edges turned in over the upper turned-in edgel of the shell. It will serve as a convenient 6o means by which the supporting-chains may be connected to the weight.
`Itwill be seen that by my invention I pro duce a very simple and desirable counterbalancing-weight. 6
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A counterbalancingweight consisting of cast-metal sections provided with cavities which, when the sections are put together, 7o form a hole for surrounding a guide-rod, substantiallyas specified.
2. A counterbalancing-weight consisting of sections of cast metal provided with cavities which, when the sections are put together, form a hole for iitting a guide-rod, and having their oppositefaces concaved, substantially as specified.
3.V The combination, with a counterbalancingweight consisting of sections of cast `metal Ec provided with cavities which, when put together, forni a hole for surrounding a guidel rod, of a shell inclosng said sections, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with a eounterbalancing weight consisting of sections of cast metal provided with cavities which, when put together, form a hole for surrounding a guiderod, ot' a shell inclosing the saine and formed ot' two parts, which are connected transversely 9o to the meeting or opposite faces of the sec-v tionsof the weight, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with a counterbalancing-weight consisting of sections 'of cast metal providedwith cavities which, when put together, forni a hole for surrounding a guiderod, of a shell inclosing the same and 'having its upper and lower edges turned inward to lit the guide-rod, substantially as specified.
