This invention relates to platters.

An object of this invention is t generally improve the construction disclosed in our copendin application Serial No. 648,988, filed February 20, 1946, for Platters.

Another object of this invention is to provide a platter on which food may be broiled in an oven, and highly improved detachable means engageable with the platter and serving to permit carrying the platter, and also serving to support the platter in spaced relation above the table top so as not to scorch the linen.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide in combination, a platter, and a pair of spring clips detachably engaged with the ends of the platter and provided with insulating legs to support the platter in raised position.

Yet a further object of this invention is to provide an improved device of the character described, comprising a metal well and tree platter provided with parallel depressed wells at the ends thereof for supporting the platter in horizontal position in an oven, and a pair of detachable spring clips detachably engaging the ends of the platter, each spring clip comprising a jaw engaging beneath a portion of the platter and provided with insulating legs whereby the platter may be supported in raised position, and a jaw hinged to the first jaw and engaging the top of said portion of said platter, and spring means for clamping said jaws against opposite sides of the platter, each clip being provided with handles to permit the jaws to be opened for detachin said clip from said platter.

Still a further object of this invention is to provide a strong, rugged and durable device of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, and yet practical and efiicient to a high degree in use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,

means for carrying the platter and means for supporting the platter in raised position above the table top, as will appear more fully hereinafter.

The platter H has a top horizontal fiat rim flange portion l3 and is formed adjacent the ends thereof with a pair of depressed parallel wells l2. It is also formed with depressed trees H extending to said wells. The fiat flange 13 has outward extensions l3a at the ends thereof for. spring clamping engagement with the spring clips or clamps l5.

It will be understood that the metal platters H may be placed directly in an oven with food thereon for broiling. Difiiculty has been heretofore encountered in serving the hot plate with the food thereon because it is hot when carried to the table and when placed on the table it would scorch the linen. The clips [5, as will be seen herein, provide both the means for carrying the platter and the means to support the platter above the table top to prevent scorching of the linen.

. Each clip l5 comprises a bottom member l5a and a top member l5b hinged thereto. The bottom member I5a comprises a top horizontal wall or jaw I6 adapted to contact the underside of flange portion [3a. Extending downwardly from the ends of wall [6 are vertical parallel portions l1 from which there extend outwardly, hori-.

zontal flanges l8, each formed with a through opening I9. Portion I6 is furthermore formed with a rearwardly and downwardly projecting handle portion 20. Extending upwardly from opposite sides of portion 20 are a pair of perforated ears 2| supporting a transverse, horizontal hinge pin 22. Attached to the flange portions I8 and contacting the undersides thereof, are legs 23 made of insulating material. The members 23 are each formed in its upper surface with a socket 24 in which is embedded an internally screw threaded tube 25. Extending through opening I9 is a screw 26 screwed to the tube 25 for fixing the foot 23 firmly to the flange l 8. The heads of the screws contact the upper sides'of flanges l8. The legs 23 project below the wells l2 so that the platter may be supported on a table in raised position above the upper surface of the table whereby the linen will not be scorched.

The upper hinged member 15b comprises a jaw portion30 contacting the upper surface of flange- -portion I3a. Extending from jaw 30 1s an up-'- wardly bent portion 3| from which extends a handle portion 32 which is normally inclined upwardly and outwardly. The handle 32 is formed with a pair of downwardly extending perforated ears receiving the hinge pin 22 and thereby hinging members I50. and [51) together. On the hinge pin 22 is a torsion hinge spring 34 comprising spaced coils 31 received on the pivot pin 22, and

interconnecting portion 35 contacting the upper side of handle 20, and terminal portions 36 extending from said coil portions and contacting the underside of handle 32.

It will now be understood that spring. tends to clamp the jaws l6 and 36 together against opposite sides of flange portion 13a. The handles and 32 serve to carry the platter, and they may be squeezed together to open the jaws l6 and 30. It will be noted that the lower jaw [6' extends to an edge 13a located further inwardly than jaw 30 thereby facilitating engagement of the clamps with the platter. In other words, jaw 16 may be first engaged with flange l3a. and as the jaws are opened, the clips may be moved inwardly for engagement with the platter.

The platter without the. clips 15 may be put into the hot oven with food thereon. After.

broiling, the platter may be moved out of theoven and the" clips 15 engaged with opposite ends thereof. The platter can then be readily carried to the table, as the clips are not hot. The platter is supported on the table in raised position above the table top by legs 23 so as not to scorch the linen.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meetthe conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination, a platter comprising end flanges at opposite ends thereof, separately removable means to detachably grip each ofsaid' flanges, each of said means comprising a jaw engaging the underside of said flange, a pair of legs extending from said jaw to supportv said;

said. platter being adapted to rest on the' said wells and individual separately removable spring clips engaging said flanges, each clip comprising a plate contacting the under side of the flange, depressed fingers extending downwardly from the ends of the plate, insulating legs at tached to said depressed fingers, the distance from the under side of the legs to the top of the. plate being of such height that when the spring clips are attached to the flanges, the platter will be supported on the insulating legs and the wells will be above the surface upon which the platter is supported, a member pivoted to each. plate and having a handle at one end, and an arm contacting the upper side of the'flange', extending from the handle, and spring means on the pivotal connection between the pivoted member and the plate for retaining said arm in contact with the flange.

4. In combination, a platter, a pair of separately removable spring clips detachably gripping the platter, each clip comprising a bottom them her having a jaw engaging the underside of the platter, and a pair of insulating legs extending from said jaw to support the platter on a surface in raised position above said surface, and a second jaw hinged to the first jaw and engaging the topof the platter, and spring means to clamp said jaws against opposite sides of the platter.

5. In combination, a platter, a pair of separately removable spring clips det'achably gripping the platter, each clip comprising a bottom member having a jaw engaging the underside of the platter, and a pair of insulating legs extending from'said jaw to support the platter on a surface in raised position above said surface, and a second jaw hinged to the first jaw and engagingthe top of the platter, and spring means to clamp said jaws against opposite sides of the platter, the bottomjaw extending beyond the top aw.
