Description

May 15, 1951 v v. PETR, JR
VENTILATOR Filed April 9, 1948 w mm 5 mp V A A TTORNE Y.
Patented May 15, 1951 UNITED STATES RATENT OFFICE Application April 9, 1948, Serial No. 20,150 In Czechoslovakia November 8, 1947 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to ventilators.
An object of the invention is to provide a ventilator or blower adapted to create an air stream of large cross sectional area.
Another object of this invention is to provide a ventilator of the character described which is readily reversible to act either as a blower or as a suction device.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a ventilator adapted to discharge air into or draw air from two directions simultaneously.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a ventilator according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the ventilator.
Referring to the drawing, there are provided two parallel shafts I, 2 carrying respective pulleys 3, 4. A belt or steel ribbon 5 engages these pulleys, this belt having depending from its lower edge a set of blades 6 which are secured by rivets Hi to strips 19, projecting downwardly from the ribbon 5, and are received in an annular channel 8. The blades 6 are inclined at a predetermined angle to the belt, this angle being the same for all blades.
The channel 8 is bounded by an outer wall It and an inner wall I5, both of these walls being provided with the apertures 9 permitting the passage of air or some other fluid to be agitated by the device. A central duct I is divided by a partition 12 into two branches I0, 10" each terminating adjacent a respective one of the two parallel portions of inner wall l5. Two hori-- zontal ducts II, II" respectively terminate adjacent the corresponding portions of outer wall l4. Since the inlet or outlet ends of these ducts register with the apertures 9, air may flow past the blades 6 from duct 10 to the ducts H, H or vice versa.
Suitable transmission means may connect one or both of the shafts I, 2 with an appropriate power source (not shown), these transmission means having been indicated by a pulley 16 secured to shaft I and a belt I! engaging pulley it.
The operation of the ventilator described is as follows:
When the belt or ribbon is driven to rotate in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1, air is drawn up inside the duct I0 by the blades 0, passes through the apertures c of walls I5, I 4, and is forced out through the ducts H, I!" along the entire Width thereof; this has been indicated by the solid arrows in Fig. 2. When the direction of rotation is reversed, air is drawn inwardly through the ducts H, I! and is discharged in a downward direction through the central duct H], as suggested by the broken-line arrows in Fig. 2.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A ventilator comprising two parallel shafts, a pulley on each of said shafts, a belt engaging both of said pulleys, an annular channel adjacent and aligned with said belt, a set of blades all secured to said belt and inclined thereto at a predetermined angle, said blades being received in said channel, said channel being provided with an apertured inner wall and an apertured outer wall, central duct means terminating at said apertured inner wall, external duct means terminating at said apertured outer wall, and drive means for rotating said belt.
2. A ventilator comprising two parallel shafts, a pulley on each of said shafts, a belt engaging both of said pulleys, central and external duct means having aligned openings, said duct means between them defining a channel adjacent and aligned with said belt, a set of blades all secured to said belt and inclined thereto at a predetermined angle, said blades being received in said channel, and drive means for rotating said belt.
3. A ventilator comprising two parallel shafts, a pulley on each of said shafts, a belt engaging both of said pulleys, an annular channel adjacent and aligned with said belt, a set of blades all secured to said belt and inclined thereto at a predetermined angle, said blades being received in said channel, said channel being provided with an apertured inner wall and an apertured outer wall, central duct means terminating at said apertured inner wall, external duct means terminating at said apertured outer wall, and reversible drive means for rotating said belt.
4. A ventilator comprising two parallel shafts, a pulley on each of said shafts, a belt engaging both of said pulleys, central and external duct means having aligned openings, said duct means between them defining a channel adjacent and aligned with said belt, a set of blades all secured to said belt and inclined thereto at a predetermined angle, said blades being received in said channel, and reversible drive means for rotating said belt.
