SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,279, dated March 21, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Rose. H. GoLDsMITII, of Charleston, Charleston county, South Oarolina, have inventedan Improvement in Cotton- Whippers,of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in combining certain instrumentalities, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine. Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on linewx ofFig. 1.
A represents a box of an oblong form with an inclined bottom, a, formed of wire-cloth.
At the upper end of this box is a feed-spout, Z), and a shaft, B, carrying the whipper-arnls 0, arranged spirally and extending nearly in contact with the rounded" bottom a.
On the upper end of shaft B, and within the spout b,'are armsd, which carry the cotton from the spoutinto the box A,-Which has a deliveryopening and spout, e. fis a roller on a shaft, 9, arranged above and parallel to shaft B, and provided with longitudinal blades. Theshafts B y are connected by a belt and pulleys, while cloth bottom, while the roller f serves to press the shaft B has a bevel-pinion, which meshes with a similar one on a cross-shaft, i, which is driven by a belt from a mainshaft, k.
The operation is as follows: lhe cotton is placed in the spout b and carried by the feedarms 01 down into the box, where it is thor- V oughly separated by the whipper-arms and car ried to the delivery end without cutting the staple. The dust escapes through the wire- ROSE H. GOLDSMITH.
