6, Claims.
The present invention relates to toy locomotives and is more particularly directed toward a toy locomotive having a figure in the cab simulating the engineer and movable toward and away from the window of the locomotive cab.
According to the present invention the figure is so mounted in the cab as to be movable back and forth and it is associated with mechanism which insures that the figure will be moved toward the window whenever the locomotive and associated tender pass over a curved section of track. When the locomotive and tender are on straight track, the figure is held in an erect position inside the cab. In operation the locomotive made according to the present invention appears to have an engineer who looks out the window each time the locomotive rounds a curve, thereby increasing the play value of the train.
The accompanying drawings show, for purposes of illustrating the present invention, one embodiment in which the invention may take form, it being understood that the drawings are illustrative of the invention rather than limiting the same.

Figure 1 is a perspective showing a toy locomotive and tender;
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the rear of the cab, with figure and operating mechanism in place;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the operating mechanism detached;
Figure 4 is a section on the line 44 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is an elevation in the direction of the arrow 5 of Figure 3.
The usual toy locomotive and tender are shown at l0 and II respectively. They operate over a curved track E2. The locomotive has the usual side window opening l3 and the usual swingable draw bar M.
The mechanism forming the attachment has a base plate 55 with upwardly bent ears 6 at the side adapted for securement to the locomotive body by screws IT. The base plate has an up wardly extending bracket IS with side arm is. The bracket is forward of the window opening l3 and carries a toy figure 2D simulating the engineer. This figure is pivoted at 24 and urged to an erect position by a spring 22. The lower end of the figure carries a hard pin (made of wire) which enters a hole 24 in a lever 25 pivoted at 26. This pivot is substantially in line with the pivot 2! for the figure, and to the rear of the toy figure so that when the lever 25 is shifted '2 from the full line position'shown in the drawings the toy figure is swung toward the window opening as indicated in Figure 2.
The lever 25 carries a pin 21 which enters an elongated hole 2'! in the arm 28 of a lever 29 pivoted to the base at 30. The levers 25 and 29 have downwardly extending fingers 3| and 32 which are in the path of swing of the draw bar Hi.
When the draw bar is not in contact with either of the fingers, the spring 22 holds the parts in the position shown, the pin 21 and slot 21 providing a stop. When the draw bar engages one of the fingers, the figure is shifted so that the engineer appears to look out the window of the locomotive cab.
Since it is obvious that the invention may be embodied in other forms and constructions within the scope of the claims, I wish it to be understood that the particular forms shown are but a few of these forms, and various modifications and changes being possible, I do not otherwise limit myself in any way with respect thereto.
What is claimed is:
l. A toy locomotive having the usual cab with side window opening and swingable draw bar connectable to a trailing vehicle, a toy figure in the cab mounted in the cab for movement toward and away from the window opening, means for biasing the figure away from the window opening, and draw bar operated means for shifting it toward the window opening when the draw bar is shifted from its median position.
2. The locomotive of claim 1, wherein the draw bar operated means includes horizontally swingable levers pivotally supported within the cab and having fingers extending downwardly into the path of the draw bar.
3. An attachment for a toy locomotive or the like, comprising a base plate, two levers pivoted to the base plate to swing about vertical axis, each lever having a downwardly extending operating finger, a driving connection between the two levers such that the fingers approach or separate in unison, a toy figure mounted on the plate to swing about a horizontal axis and operably connected to one of the levers, and a restoring spring acting on the figure to. shift it to a position in which the fingers approach one another.
4. A toy locomotive with the usual engineers cab and tender connected together by a swingable draw barto facilitate passage over a curved track, a toy figure in the cab of the locomotive to simulate the engineer, means for shifting the figure from a position in the cab to a position where it leans toward the side of the cab, a sprin biasing it to the first position, a lever on each side of the draw bar engageable by the draw bar and connected to the means to shift the figure when the draw bar is swung out of its median position.
5. A figure toy having a toy man-like figure, means for pivoting the figure near the feet for swinging sidewise, a spring tendingto maintain the figure erect, a lever operably connected to the figure below the pivot to swing the figure and supported about a vertical pivot located so that the point of connection moves transversely, and a second lever pivoted about a vertical axis and connected with the first lever to swing it.
6. A toy locomotive having the usual cab with side window opening and floor, a plate detachably secured in the cab adjacent the floor, the plate having an upwardly extending bracket in front of the window opening, a toy figure pivoted to the bracket to swing toward and from the window opening, a spring acting on the figure to 4 hold it away from the opening, a lever pivoted to the plate and having a driving connection with the figure below the pivot of the figure and an operating finger extending beyond the rear of the cab, and a second lever pivoted to the base and operably connected to the first lever to actuate it, the second lever having an operating finger extending beyond the rear of the cab.
