Description

STATES PATENT (')FFICE ALPHEUS BISSELL, OF BERLIN, VISCONSIN.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,483, dated September 20, 1859'.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALrHEUs BIssELL, of Berlin, in the county of Green Lake and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashing- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in arranging and combining the several parts of this machine in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the figure, A, represents an oblong box which contains the water, and the clothes for washing.
C, represents a false, or movable corrugated bottom which is placed in the box A, said bottom being connected by means of cords a, a, a, a, to a platform which hangs suspended under the box A, by means of said cords.
L, represents battens secured on each side of the box. A shaft z', which is provided with two cranks J, J, has its bearing in the upper ends of the battens, while in their lower ends a shaft has its bearing which is provided with a crank ci, and a cam chuck E. This chuck is situated between the bottom of the box and the platform D.
F, represents a frame which is provided with two rollers m', m, on each side which rest and roll upon the sides of the box, or rather upon the upper edges of the sides of the box. Said frame is also provided with two corrugated rubber rollers H, H, against which the corrugated bottom C presses.
I, I, are two levers which connect to each side of the frame F, with one end, and to the cranks J, J at their other.
c, represents a serrated plate which is secured to one side of the box, being situated in such relation to crank CZ, that the said crank will catch in the teeth of said plate for the purpose of stationing the chuck E, at any desired point.
l In using this machine the clothes are placed in the box upon the false bottom C, between said bottom and the rubber rollers H, H, and are washed by operating the said rollers backward and forward in the box over them by means of the handle on shaft z', which is for the purpose of moving the frame F, in which the said rollers are conned. The bottom C, is pressed against the rollers (H,) by means of the chuck E, which bears the platform D, down, and this by means of the cords a, a, elevates the said bottom C. Any pressure may be given to clothes in this manner that may be required, dirty clothes always needing more pressure than those partially dirty.
ae represent pulleys over which the cords a, a, pass, said pulleys being situated at the top of the four corners of the box.
P, is a bar placed longitudinally of the box over the rollers m, m, of the frame F, in such a manner that when the bottom C, presses the said frame upward the rollers m, m, will bear against the bar P, and thus keep the frame in its proper position.
I do not lay any claim to any of the in` dividual parts of this machine, but
I do claim- The arrangement of the false bottom C, cords (a, 61,) pulleys w, platform D, and cam chuck E, with the frame F, provided with corrugated, rubbers H, H, with rollers m, m, and with levers I, I, said frame being operated by means of cranks J J, the whole being combined and used substantially as and for the purpose specified.
