This invention relates to a coiled stock holding fixture and more particularly to a xture for securing the outer end of spirally coiled strip stock to a stock reel while cutting the tie bands from the coil.
Long lengths of metal strip material wound in tightly wrapped spiral coils and maintained in said coiled condition by a plurality of tie bands each transversely encircling a section of the overlapping strip material, when about to be used, for example, as strip stock for a punch press, may be placed on a reel support and the tie bands severed and removed therefrom to free the strip stock for use. Coiled strip stock of relatively heavy gage, of substantial width and hard quality, possesses an inherent resiliency which creates a momentary hazard when the last tie band is removed and the coil stock begins to rapidly uncoil to a more static condition. It is to overcome the hazard thus encountered that the present invention is utilized. v
An object of the present invention is to provide a xture for securing the outer end of coiled strip material to the reel supporting the coil.
In one embodiment of the invention, one end of a coil of strip stock mounted' on a reel having a plurality of radiating reel arms on either side of the coil is temporarily clamped to the reel by an elongated member having a transversely disposed end thereon forming a jaw engageable with one of the reel arms on one side of the coil and the elongated member is provided with a longitudinal way and ratchet teeth for receiving a movable jaw slidably mounted thereon to engage the reel arm on the other side of the coil, the jaw being held in adjusted position by a spring pressed pawl engaging the ratchet teeth on the elongated member of the xture. A clamping plate adjustably secured to the elongated member by a pair of thumb screws is adapted to receive Ythe free end of the coil between it and the elongated member and to clamp it tightly against the fixture by the adjustment of the thumb nuts, whereby the outer end of the coil is thus secured in xed relation to the reel so that the tie bands may be removed from the coil to allow it to partly uncoil to a less stressed condition. y
The invention will be more fully understood from the following detailed description thereof when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof in which Fig. 1 is a face view of the coil with the tie bands attached;

Referring now to the drawings, particularly Fig. l, there is shown an elongated sheet `metal strip tightly wound into the spiral coil andA held in tightly Wound condition by a plurality lof metal straps or bands Il transversely encircling the "overlapped-layers of the strip material and secured thereto by sealsy I2. The coil I0; when ready for use, is applied Ato the horizontal portions l5 (Figs. 2 and 3) of adjustably mounted arm units I6 of the reel I1. Removablelarins I8 of the arm units I6are removed. 'fromgthe reel and the coil I0 is placed in position against the stationary arms I9, after ,which the reinov; able arms I8 are replaced on the `reel to conine the coil laterally between the arms I8 and I9. The arm units I6 are mounted for radial adjustment on radially disposed guide rods 20, which pass through apertures in bosses 2| on thearms I9 and by sleeves 23 rotatable on the rods 20 andA exteriorly threaded to engage threads ina boss 24 on the arm I9. The threaded screws 23 are connected together through bevel gears of a suitable control mechanism by means of vwhich the sleeves 23 may be rotated and the reel arm units I6 may be radially adjusted. With the coil I0 mounted on the reel, the tie band II holding the end 25 of the coil may be severed and removed to permit the end of the coil to be clamped to a holding iixture 26 and secured relative to the reel, after which the remaining tie bands II and I2 may be severed and removed'.l
The holding fixture 26 comprises an lL- shaped plate 2'I having an elongated Ileg 28 and a transversely disposed hook-shaped end l29, which forms a stationary jaw of the holding xture. On opposite faces of the leg 28, longitudinal grooves or ways 30-30 are provided forming a T-shaped portion 3| forv slidably engaging in a T-shaped slot 32 of a block 33 adjustably mounted on the leg 28. The block 33 is recessed at 35 to form arr adjustable jaw slidable on the member 21 and is held in adjusted position by a pawl 36 engageable with the ratchet teeth 31 formed on the T-shaped portion of the leg 28. Mounted for reciprocation in a recess 38 in the block 33, the pawl 36 is pressed into engagement with the teeth 3l by a spring 39 and may be moved from the teeth engaging a knob 40 secured to the rod 4I formed integral with the pawl 36. Thus it will be seen that the fixture may be clamped to the arms I8 and I9, which are spaced apart from each other various distances according to the width of the strip material in the coil l0.
For securing the end 25 of the coilof stripV material to the xture, a clamping plate 45 is provided and is adjustably mounted on the underneath side of the member 28 by a pair of threaded members 46 rotatably mounted in apertures in the member 28 and threadedly engaging 'apertures in the plate 45. The threaded members 46-46 are provided with knurled handles 41, by means of which the threaded members may be turned to move the clamping plate 45 toward or away from the member 21.
In using the holding xture, the free end 25 of the coil is inserted between the member 21 and Athe vclamping plate 45 and the member 21 is placedrelative to the reel so that the hooked stationary jaw 29 thereon engages the guide rod 26 of the reel underneath the boss 2i of the arm I9, and the adjustable jaw 36 is moved toward the stationary jaw' into engagement with the removable arm 18, as indicated in Fig. 4.v 'IAhe locking pa'Wl 36 will lock the movable jaw in position on the fixture and the thumb screws 41 may then be rotated to move the clamping plate 45 to clamp the end 25 of the coil tightly against the iixture 21. Thus the xture in the position just described serves to anchor the outer end 25 of the coil of material toa pair of arms Vl B and i9 lof the reel and prevent the movement' thereof when the remaining tie bands Il are removed therefrom and the uncoiling of the reel takes place. With the 'outer end 25 of the coiled strip lixed relative to the reel, the partial uncoiling of the strip to a static condition occurs by a movementof the inner end of the coil relative to the xed outer end and thus involves no hazard. Y What is claimed is: 1. A' fixture for holding the end of a. coil of strip material on a reel comprising a member, a
pair of jaws carried by the member and engageable in gripping relation with said reel, one of said jaws being movable on said member relative to `said other jaw, means for holding said movable jaw in adjusted position, and a clamp mounted on said member for clamping the end of said strip material to said member.
2. A xture for holding the end of a coil of strip material in a fixed position on a reel comprising an elongated member having a fixed jaw projecting therefrom,v a movable jaw slidably mounted on said elongated member, said jaws being operable to engage the reel and clamp the elongated member thereto, means for releasably holding said movable jaw in clamping position on said elongated member, and means including a clamping plate for clamping the end of said coil to said elongated member. f Y
3. A fixture for holding the end of acoil of strip material on a reel comprising an elongated member having a fixed jaw extending laterally therefrom, a movable jaw slidable onV said elongated member, `a ratchet formed on said elongated member, a spring-pressed pawl carried by said movable jaw and engageable with said ratchet to hold said movable jaw in adjusted psition on said member whereby the jaws may be held in clamping engagement with said reel to secure said member thereto, and a clamp on said elongated member for clamping the end of' said coil to said elongated member.

5. A fixture for holding the end of a coil of strip material in a xed position on a spider type reel comprising-an elongated member having a jaw projecting transversely therefrom, a movable jaw slidably mounted on said elongated member, ratchet teethA formed on said elongated member, a spring-pressed pawl m-ovably carried byv said movable jaw and engageable with said ratchet teeth to hold said'movable jaw in adjusted position on said member, whereby said jaws may beheld in clamping engagement with arms of said reel to secure said member thereto in a selected position longitudinally of said arms, a clamping plate for cooperation with said member to clamp the end of said strip of material to said `elongated member, and a pair of thumb screws cooperating with said clamping plate and said elongated member for actuating said clamping plate.
6. A fixture for use in mounting coils of stock on a feed wheel associated with a processing apparatus comprising a substantially L-shaped plate having a way formed thereon, a clamping member mounted to slide in said way, a springpressedv pawl mounted on the clam-ping member, a ratchet formed on the L-shaped member for cooperation with said pawl whereby the shaped member and-A its cooperating clamp may be clamped to a reel, a second clamping plate for cooperation with said L-shaped member to clamp the end of a strip of stock to said L-shaped member, and a pair of threaded actuators mounted in said L-shaped member for actuating said second clamping plate.
7. A removable xture applicable to a reel for holding the end of a coil of strip material on said reel comprising a pair of members, adjustable means connecting said members operable to move one of said members relative to the other to clamp the end portion of the coil of strip material therebetween, and adjustable means carried by one of said members operable to clamp said members to said reel.
