Quebec, Canada Application November 15, 1948, Serial No. 59,994 'In Canada October 12, 1948 This invention relates to improvements in Wooden boxes and more particularly to the arrangement of bottle spacers in boxes intended for use as Shipping and/or carrying cases for bottled goods.
1 A particular object of this invention is to provide a box with removable transversely and longitudinally extending spacer bars in which the bars extending in one direction are freely mounted against lateral displacement onsupports therefor carried by the box. and thebars extending in the opposite direction are arranged over aid first mentioned bars to retain them on heir pports.
Another object is to provide a box with spacer Jbars arran ed to extend in one direction, which bars are slidable only in their lengthwise direction in side openings of the box and are adapted to be positioned over bars freely mounted to extend in the opposite direction to hold said last mentioned bars against displacement. I
A further object is to provide a novel central spacer of plywood construction serving also as a partition and a carrying member for the box.
Further objects and characteristic features of the invention will be readily understood from the following detailed de cription taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a box embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the box shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the lines 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my improved box comprises side walls 5, end walls 6, and a bottom wall 1. Side and end walls are of plywood veneer, the component plies of which are secured together by waterproof adheslve. The bottom wall 1 may be of plywood veneer or of solid wood. Skids 7a may be secured to the under side of the box, said skids being arranged to extend lon itudinally of the box adjacent the side edges thereof.
. Horizontally extending top and bottom cleats 8 and 9 and vertically extending side cleats II] are secured to the outer side of each end wall panel 6. These cleats are arranged in rectangular arrangement to lie flush with the edges of panel 6. Y
The end walls 6 and end portions of side walls 5 are fastened by nails or other suitable fastening elements, to side cleats Ill and to the end portions of top and bottom cleats 8 and 9. Skids 2 M are fastened bynails H. to the underside of cleats 9. r
A reinforcing strap I5 is fastened to each end of the box by the fastening elements II and I2 so that each strap extends across bottom wall 1 and upwardly along side wall panels 5. Where skids la are emplyed,'the straps l will also be passed therearound. The upper portions |5a of each-strap are bent inwardly over the adjacent end wall cleat 8 and fastened thereto by fastening elements I 8. The inner extremities of the upper strap portion 554; are bent downwardly, as indicated at 55b, and fitted in slots 11 provided in cleats 8. The end wall panels 6' are provided with hand openings 6a adjacent the lower edges of top cleats 8.
The box is shown fitted with a central transversely extending vertical partition wall and transverse and longitudinally extending spacer bars 2| and 22 respectively. Wall 20 and bars 2| 22 serve to retain bottles placed in the box in spaced relation to one another. Partition wall 29 consists of a framework including side members 23 and top and bottom members 24 and 25 suitably interlocked together at their corners and sheets of plywood, indicated at 26, which are fastened to either side of the framework by suitable fastening elements 21. Conventional handgrip openings 28 through the plywood sheets 26 are located a convenient distance below their upper edges to permit lifting of the box, preferably by gripping the hand about the top frame member 24. Partition wall 20 is secured centrally of the box to the side walls 5 and bottom wall I by means of nails 29, or other suitable fastening elements.
The transverse spacer bars 2| are arranged midway between partition wall 20 and the adjacent end wall 6 of the box. Bars 2| are freely sup orted by bar supports 30 mounted on the bottom wall 6 and flatly secured in an upright position to the inner surfaces of opposing side walls 5. A recess 32 is provided at the upper end of support 3|! for the reception of bar 2| therein.
The longitudinally extending bars 22, suitably spaced within the box, are arranged over the transverse bars 2| to prevent dislodgernent'of bars 2| which are freely disposed in the recesses 32 of supports 30. Openings 34 are provided in the end walls 6 and partition wall 20 through which bars 22 are slidably inserted to hold them against movement in other than their lengthwise direction. The outer surfaces of end walls 6 are provided with reinforcement strips 35 having openings 34a through which bars 22 are inserted. Strips 35 extend transversely of the end walls between side cleats I0 and are secured to the cleats and/or the end walls by fastening elements 36. The bars 22 are prevented from movement in their lengthwise direction by staples 31, or other suitable elements, which project into the bars 22 and reinforcement strips 35. Staples 31 should be removable from the bars 22 to permit movement of the bars when desired.
In arranging the spacer bars in the box, transverse bars 2! are first deposited into the recesses of supports 36. Bars 22 are then slidably inserted through the openings 34 of the end and partition walls 5 and 26 respectively and the openings 3 1a of the reinforcement strips 35. In this position bars 22 will overlie bars 2! to prevent dislodgement of the latter from the recesses provided in supports 39. When bars 22 are in place staples 31 secure said bars to the strips 35. These staples should be placed for easy removal in order that the bars 22 may be readily withdrawn for their replacement or for the replacement of bars 2! should any one of these bars become damaged or broken.
Having thus described what is now considered 7 to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be readily understood that various modifications may be resorted to without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention as 5 defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
A bottle carrying box including side, end and bottom walls, a plurality of cylindrical spacer bars extending transversely and freely disposed between the opposing side walls, bar supporting members mounted on the bottom wall and flatly secured in an upright position to the inner surfaces of the opposing side walls, said supports being recessed to provide open top bearing surfaces in which said transverse bars are freely supported against lateral displacement, a plurality of cylindrical spacer bars extending longitudinally of the box and at right angles to said transverse bars, said longitudinall extending bars being slidably fitted through openings provided in the end walls of the box to prevent their movement in other than their lengthwise direction, and having intermediate portions overlying said transverse bars in contact therewith to prevent their dislodgement from the bearing surface of said supporting members, reinforcement strips secured against the outer surface of the end walls, said strips being provided with openings therethrough into which the longitudinal bars are slidably fitted, and stapling means carried by said reinforcement strips and extending into the longitudinally extending bars for securing said last mentioned bars against movement in the reinforcing strip openings provided therefor. l l CYRIL F.
