Patented Mar. 27, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TRUING AND BALANCING DEVICE FOR A FACE TYPE DIAMOND GRINDING WHEEL Elmer Speicher, Birmingham, Mich.

This invention relates to a truing and balancing device for a face type diamond grinding wheel, and more particularly to a novel construction associated with the grinding wheel by which the grinding surface thereof may be arranged in a plane at right angles to its axis of rotation.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an unusual and simplified. construction in conjunction with a face type diamond grinding wheel to permit truing of the same.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a balancing means in association with the truing means for minimizing vibration of said grinding wheel during rotation.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specifi ation and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing in which Fig. l is an elevational section of a face type diamond grinding wheel as mounted upon its driving spindle, there being a truing indicator provided, and
Fig. 2 is a left end elevational view of the grinding wheel.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferred embodiment of the invention and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set out.
Referring to the drawing the present face type diamond grinding wheel includes the annular plate I I having a central depression ii and corresponding thereto the central plate l2. There is provided upon the peripheral portion of said grinding wheel an annular abrasive ring it which is intimately bonded and secured to annular plate H and which includes a conventional diamond abrasive surface wherein finely divided diamond particles are secured in the ring form is as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The present diamond grinding wheel il-l2 it has a central aperture to receive the central projecting stein i of the rotatable wheel driving spindle 55, said spindle having an annular flange i6 adjacent its outer endand arranged at the inner end of the stem M as shown in Fig. 1.
Circular pack plate H has a central opening which similarly receives the stern l4 after which the central plate 52 of the grinding wheel is positioned upon said stern and immovably secured thereon by the nut 22 which engages the threaded portion 2| on the outer end of said stem.
The central plate :2 of the grinding wheel has a plurality of spaced circularly arranged tapped openings within which are threadably projected screws l8 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In setting up the grinding wheel for testing the face 53 to determine whether all points upon its outer surface lie in the same plane at right an.- gles to the axis of rotation of the spindle l5, said grinding wheel is arranged as shown in Fig. 1 with a suitable indicator 23 being provided. Said indicator is mounted upon a bracket 25 and includes the rotatable indicator arm 24, the lateral extension 26 and the actuating arm 27 which is arranged normally of the outer surface of the grinding surface it. By setting the indicator with respect to and in slight contact with the surface of the grinding wheel, rotation of the latter will indicate whether its surface is true, and whether all points upon its surface lie in a plane normal to the axis of rotation of the driving spindle l5.
Variations in the surface l3 are corrected by adjusting the screws 58 selectively so that the inner ends thereof are in operative engagement with the inner surface of the back plate 11. These screws are turned placing portions of the wheel plate i2 under a slight bending moment until the wheel is so adjusted that rotation thereof with respect to the indicator arm 27 will show little or no variation on the indicator arm 24 with respect to the dial of said indicator.
When the grinding wheel has been properly adjusted so that its outer grinding surface l3 lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotaticn of spindle it, then said grinding wheel has been properly trued, as shown by indicator 23.
Normally the grinding wheel is not completely balanced, and upon rotation thereof certain vibrations are set up. This counter-acted and overcome by applying one or more of the nuts l9 to the screws 28 placing the same selectively and locking the same in position upon one or more of the screws it by the lock nuts 22? which are also threaded upon the corresponding screw. It will be noted that the nut or nuts it are spaced from the interior wall of the central plate l2 of the grinding wheel so as not to interfere with the setting of the screw with respect to said central plate and the back plate il.
By this construction th re is provided a simplified truing and balancing device for the face type diamond grinding wheel such as is shown in the drawing.
It is contemplated that under some conditions the circular back plate i! may be omitted if desired so that the rear surface of the grinding wheel bears directly against the forward flat surface of the flange l e on spindle l5. Accordingly the inner ends of the screws l 8 would operatively bear against the flange it, and by this arrangement the abrasive surface 13 of the grinding Wheel I i could be properly aligned. For instance where the diameter of the grinding wheel is such and the screws i8 are so placed as to register with the flange i6, then in such cases the plate i! could be omitted.
Having described my invention reference should now be had to the'claims which follow for determining the scope thereof.
I claim:
1. In combination, a face type diamond grinding wheel having an annular fiat abrasive surface at right angles to its axis of rotation, a rotatable spindle upon which said wheel centrally mounted and secured, a flat back plate secured upon said spindle and arranged at a ri ht angle to its axis of rotation and against wn h said wheel bears, and a plurality of spaced circularly arranged set screws threadably proje ted through said wheel with their inner ends operatively engaging said. back plate to the extent that the outer face of said grinding surface lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said spindle.
2. In combination, a rotatablespindle, a central stem projecting axially therefrom, a circular back plate mounted upon said stem and arranged at right angles to the axis of said spindle, a face type diamond grinding wheel having an annular flat abrasive surface at right angles to its axis of "rotation mounted and secured upon said stem and bearing against said back plate, and a plurality of spaced circularly arranged set screws threadably extending through transverse threaded apertures in said wheel and operatively bearing against said back plate for adjusting the inner face of said wheel with respect to said back plate so that said grinding surface lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said spindle.
3. In combination, a rotatable spindle having a circular flange adjacent one end thereof at right angles thereto, a central stem projecting axially therefrom, a circular back plate mounted upon said stem and bearing against said flange, a face type diamond grinding wheel having an annular flat abrasive surface at right angles to its axis of rotation mounted and secured upon said stem and bearing against said back plate, and a plurality of spaced circularly arranged set screws threadably extending through threaded apertures in said wheel and adjustably and operatively bearing against said back plate for adjusting said wheel with respect thereto so that said grinding surface lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said spindle.
4. In combination, a rotatable spindle having a circular flange adjacent one end thereof at right angles thereto, a central stem projecting axially therefrom, a circular back plate mounted upon said stem and bearing against said flange, a face type grinding wheel having an annular flat abrasive surface at right angles to its axis of rotation mounted upon said stem and. bearing against said back plate, a plurality of spaced circularly arranged set screws threadably extending through threaded apertures in said wheel and adjustably and operatively bearing against saidback plate for adjusting said wheel with respect thereto so that said grinding surface lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said spindle, said stem being exteriorly threaded, and a nut mounted upon said stem and operatively bearing against said grinding wheel for securing the same on said spindle.
5. In combination, a rotatable spindle, a central stem projecting axially therefrom, a circular back plate mounted upon said stem and arranged at right angles to the axis of said spindle, a face type diamond grinding wheel having an annular fiat abrasive surface at right angles to its axis of rotation mounted and secured upon said stem and bearing against said back plate, a plurality of spaced circularly arranged set screws threadably extending through transverse threaded apertures in said wheel and operatively bearing against said back plate for adjusting the inner face of said wheel with respect to said back plate so that said grinding surface lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said spindle, and nuts selectively mounted and secured upon some of said set screws for balancing said wheel against vibration upon rotation thereof.
6. In combination, a rotatable spindle having a circular flange adjacent one end thereof at right angles thereto, a central stem projecting axially therefrom, a face type diamond grinding wheel having an annular flat abrasive surface at right angles to its axis of rotation mounted and secured upon said stern and bearing against said flange, and a plurality of spaced. circularly arranged set screws threadably extending through threaded apertures in said wheel and adjustably and operatively bearing against said flange for adjusting said wheel with respect thereto so that said grinding surface lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said spindle.

In combination, a rotatable spindle having a circular flange adjacent one end thereof at right angles thereto, a central stem projecting axially therefrom, a face type diamond grinding wheel having an annular flat abrasive surface at right angles to its axis of rotation mounted and secured upon said stem and bearing against said flange, a plurality of spaced circularly arranged set screws threadably extending through threaded apertures in said wheel and adjustably and operatively bearing against said flange for adjusting said wheel with respect thereto so that said grinding surface lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said spindle, and nuts selectively mounted and secured upon some of said set screws for balancing said wheel against vibration upon rotation thereof.
