1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a combination wire wrapper and screwdriver and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a combined wire wrapper and screwdriver which is simple, economical and compact in construction, easy to operate and effective and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is ,the provision of a device of the character set forth which provides in a single instrument means for winding or wrapping wire about a screw by the turning of a handle forming a part thereof and means operable by the same handle for engaging the screw and turning the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means and mechanism for engaging and wrapping or coiling wire.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel clutch mechanism forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line 55 of Figure 3, and
Figures 6 and 7 are perspective views illustrating certain elements of the invention.
Generally there is provided a combination wire wrapper and screwdriver in which is provided a conventional handle and screwdriver. About the shank of the screwdriver is reciprocally mounted a cylindrically shaped wire engager which is spring-pressed outwardly in its normal condition and which is interiorly provided with a clutch for engaging the screwdriver blade whereby to turn the same with the handle and which automatically disengages such clutch when the handle is pressed toward the work to cause the screwdriver blade to protrude through the wire engager.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a combination screwdriver andwire wrapper having a handle I0 having a recess II in which is aflixed a plug I2.
The inner end of a screwdriver shank -I3 is threadably afiixed in the plug I2 and the shank is provided with an integrally formed blade I4 at its outer end.
The wire-engaging mechanism comprises a cylindrical body I5 having a reduced inwardly extending exteriorly threaded portion I6 and a reduced forwardly extending exteriorly threaded portion [1. The body I5 is provided with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending opening and is slidably mounted upon the shank I3.
Integrally formed with the portion I1 is a clutch member I8 having a pair of diametrically opposed longitudinal slots I9 formed therein.
A hollow cylindrical casing 20 also surrounds the shank I3 and is threadably connected at its outer end with the portion I6 and provided at its inner end with an integrally formed inwardly extending annular lip 2|. The casing 20 is of the same outer diameter as the body I5 and is slidably mounted in the recess and a ferrule 22 aflixed to the handle I0.
The shank I3 is provided with a removably mounted annular abutment 23 and a compression spring 24 surrounds the shank I3 and bears against the abutment 23 and the inner end of the portion I6.
A wire-engaging tool 25 is provided with an interiorly threaded socket 26 which is adapted to be threadably and removably engaged with the portion I I. The tool 25 is formed with wireengaging teeth 21 at its outer end and is provided with a longitudinally extending passage 28, through which the blade I4 may be moved. The blade is formed with outwardly flaring edges 29.
In operation it will be apparent that when it is desired to wrap coils of wire around a screw, that the tool forming the present invention is placed in such manner that the teeth 21 of the tool 25 encircle the screw and that the turning of the handle II] will cause the teeth 21 to engage the wire and wind the same around the screw due to the fact that the edges 29 of the blade I4 are normally engaged in the slots I 9 of the clutch I8 and that when no pressure is applied to the handle III the spring 24 will cause the entire wire-engaging mechanism to be forced in an outward direction.
When several turns have been made in the wire, the handle I0 is pressed against the screw until the head or blade I4 engages the conventional slot in such screw. This action will, of course, disengage the edges 29 from the clutch l8 and at the same time compress the spring 24. When the screw has been driven and the entire 3 tool removed therefrom, the spring 24 will automatically return the Wire-engaging apparatus to it normal outward position.
It will be understood that the tool 25 may be provided in several convenient sizes and that they may be easily and quickly interchanged as needed for varying sizes of wire.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that manyminor modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising a handle having a recess centrally disposed in one end thereof, a plug affixed to said handle at the inner end of said recess, an elongated shank afiixed to said plug and extending out: wardly of said recess, a screwdriver blade having outwardly flaring ears formed integrally with said shank at the outer end thereof, a cylindrical assembly rotatably and slidably mounted upon said shank and partially receivable in said recess, said assembly having a hollow portion at its inner end, an abutment affixed to the shank within said hollow portion, a compression spring surrounding said shank and bearing against said abutment at its inner end and against the outer wall of said compartment at its forward end, said assembly having a pair of diametrically opposed longitudinal slots in the forward end thereof for normally engaging the ears of said blades, and a hollow cylindrical wire-engaging tool mounted at the outer end of said assembly and extending normally outwardly from said blade, said blade being movable outwardly of said tool by said handle against the action of said spring.
