SHOE-SOLE-CHANNELING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,612, dated March 7, 1882,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OYPRIEN OHABoT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvementsin Shoe-Sole-GhannelingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of machines which have adjustable knives for cutting channelsin the edge of boot and shoe soles, my improvements relating to details in the construction of the machine, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view, partly in section, of sufficient of a sole-channelin g machine to illustrate my invention; Fig. 2, a view of part of the opposite side of the machine; Fig. 3, a front view with some of the parts removed; Fig. 4, a front view of the detachable knife-carrying bracket; Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8, diagrams illustrating the operation of the machine; Fig. 9, Sheet 2, a perspective view of the knife-carrying bracket; Figs.
10 and 11, views of the knives and knife-hold ers detached from the bracket; Fig. 12, a rear perspective view of a block to which one of the cutting-knives is secured; Figs. 13 and 14, diagrams illustrating one of the features of the invention; and Fig.15, Sheet 3, a side view of the complete machine.
So far as the main frame and sole-feedin g devices are concerned theyare substantially similar to those described and claimed in a separate application for patent which I have made simultaneously herewith, there being two feedwhee1s,b 12, carried by independentshafts adapted to hearings in a movable frame, B, which is controlled by a spring,D, and a lever,D, connected to a treadle suitably located.
There is a work-supporting table, a, the bearin gs of which and ofits operating-shaft are carried by a movable frame, M, and there is also an adjustable gage, d, for the edge of the sole, as in ordinary channeling machines; in fact, the feeding and supporting devices and the gage maybe similar to those usually employed.
Secured to the frame A is a bracket, G,which has an inclined face, 6, and a segmental recess, f. In the inclined faces of the bracket is formed a slot, to which is adapted a knife, m, consisting of a straight bar of steel sharpened at the lower end, the knife being secured in the slot by means of a clamping-plate, g, and screw g, so that it can be readily adjusted to compensate for wear.
To the segmental recess f of the bracket G is adapted a block, F,shaped to conform to the recess, and having a threaded opening for the reception of a screw-stem, h, which is adapted to a segmental slot, 1', in the bracket G, so that said block F can be adjusted to any desired position in the'recess f and secured in position after adjustment. I
In order to insure steadiness of the block, lugs s on the back of the same are adapted to a segmental groove, 8, in the bracket. (See Fig. 12.)
The block F has in its face a slot, to which.
is adapted the cutting-knife a, similar in character to the knife m, and held in place in like manner by a clamping-plate,p, and screw 19, so as to be adjustable in the block. (See Fig. 11.) By moving the block F in the recessfof the bracket G the knife it may be adjusted to any desired angle in respect to the knife m, and channels of various forms can thus. be cut, as shown in Figs. 6,7, and 8, without the necessity of using different knives.
To reduce the size of the bracket G, I reduce the throw of the block F thereon by providing said block with two slots, one adjacent to the upper end of the block and the other adjacent to the lower end of the same, these slots being on lines radiating from the point which the end of the knife it occupies when adjusted. In cutting channels of a form between a right angle, as in Fig. 6, and an acute angle, as in Fig. 7, the block F occupies a position in the lower portion of the recess f, as shown in Fig. 13, and the knife n is adapted to the upper slot, the block being moved upward to change the angle of the knife.
In cutting slots of a form between a right angle, as in Fig. 6, and an obtuse angle, as in Fig. 8, the block F occupies a position in the upper portion of the recess f, and the knife is adapted to the lower slot, as in Fig. 14, the block being moved downward to change the angle of the knife. An even bearing of the clamping-plate is insured by providing a filling-piece, as, for the slot not occupied by the knife.
In order to hold the edge of the sole firmly on the bed a, a spring presser-bar, w. bears on the upper surface of the sole immediately in advance of the knife m.
It will be observed on reference to Figs. 6, 7, and 8 that the points of the knives m a overlap each other, so that incisions are formed in the sole at the angle formed by the side and bottom of the channel. These incisions materiallyfacilitatethe proper bending down of the edge of the sole by means of the edge-turner, which acts upon the same after it leaves the channeling-machine.
In order to adjust the work-supporting bed a in respect to the'knife n to adapt the machine to soles ofdifferentthicknesses, I use a spring, M, in connection with the frame M, which carries bearings of said bed and its driving-shaft, the frame being depressed, when desired, by means of a suitable regulating-screw. Thelever D is arranged to act upon both frames B and M, so as to move both the bed a and the feed-Wheels,in order to permit the introduction of the sole into the machine. During the operation of the machine the bed a is practically fixed, so far as vertical movement is concerned, and is not affected by slight inequalities in the thickness of the leather, the latter causing a niiovement of the frame B, carrying the feedw eels, the spring acting on the latter being lighter than the spring M, which acts on the frame M. By this means the thickness of the flange between the bottom of the sole and the bottom of the channel is not affected by variations in the thickness of the sole, but remains uniform around the entire edge of the sole.
I do not desire to claim broadly a bracket, G, secured to the frame ofthe machine and hav-. ing a slot for the fixed knife m, and an adjustable block,F,having asingl'e slot for the knife n,- nor do I claim separately the work-supporting bed occupying a fixed vertical position when the machine is at work, as this feature has been heretofore used in machines in which the knife n was not adjustable to different angles.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination ofthe channeling-knives m and n, the latter of which is adjustable to different angles, the work-supporting bed occupying during the operation of the machine a fixed vertical position, and feeding devices carried bya frame capable of moving vertically as the sole varies in thickness, as set forth.
2. The combination of the bracket G, having a segmental recess,f, and segmental slot t',witl1 the knifecarrying block F, adapted to the recess, and the confining-screw h, adapted to the slot 6, as specified.
3. The combination of the bracket G,having a segmental recess,f, segmental slot 71, and a segmental groove, 8, with the knife-carrying block F, adapted to the recess and having lugs or projections s, and the securing-bolt h, as set forth.
4. The combination of the bracket G, the knife n, and an ad ustable knifecarrying block, F, having two slots arranged at an angle in respect to each other, and each adapted for the reception of the knife, as specified.
5. The combination of the bracket G, the block F, adjustable thereon, and having two slots, as described,the knife n, the filling-piece 1-, and the clamping-plate p, as set forth.
6. The combination of the work supporting and fredingdevices, substantially as described, with the edge-channeling knives and the spring presser-bar 10, adapted to bear upon the upper face of the sole, adjacent to the edge thereof, and immediately in advance of the channelingknives, as set forth.
