MIDDLINGS-PURIFIER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 254,604, dated March '7, 1882.
Application filed January 23, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, P. STRonE BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guthriesville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Middlings-Purifiers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference m arked thereon.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is aview of that end of the machine to which is connected the suction-fans, and Fig. 4 is a view of the opposite end of the machine.
The present invention has relation to a novel construction of a middlings-purifier, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently point ed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the chest containing the usual reel, B, covered with boltingcloth, and at the end of said chest is located the air-conductor 0, cornmunicating with the airconveyer D, said conveyer at its opposite end communicating with a suitable suction-fan, E. A slide near top of conductor 0, as shown at a, regulates the draft through conductor and conveyer D, and a suitable door, I), is provided to obtain access to the interior of the air-conductor when found necessary.
The top of the air-conductor O is provided with a feed-spout consisting of three tubular sections, 0 d e, the section 0 being stationary or rigidly secured to the top f of the conductor, while the section (I is suspended therefrom so that it will swing laterally in any direction to admit of the lower section, 6, being adjusted in a horizontal direction to insurethat the middlings as it passes down the feed-spout will strike the center or apex of the conical spreader F. This horizontal adjustment of the lower section, 0, is made by the set-screws g passing through a ring, h, connected to the interior of the conductor 0, said section 0 passing down through the ring, and the ends of the set screws bearing against the same. The sections will fit one in another and enable the feed-spout to be shortened or lengthened to regulate the feeding of the'middlings to the machine. The conical spreader F is also adjustable vertically, and held at the desired height by set-screw i to regulate the spreading of the'middlings.
The suction-fan E produces an upward current of air through the conductor G, as indicated by arrows, which takes with it the impurities from the middlings as they are thrown off from the spreader F and carries them through conveyer D out through mouth of the fan. The middlin gs as they leave the spreader F are collected by hopper G and taken by conveyer H to the reel B. A suction-fan, I, draws the air through the middlin gs in the reel B and through the chest A around the exterior of the reel, the air being drawn through openings k l. The openings k Z are formed in the end of the chest A, and are regulated by slides m, and the impurities as they are taken or withdrawn from the middlings in the reel and chest pass over partition 00 and out through the fan I. The suction-fans E I are provided with suitable slides, K, operated by rods 0,0ne end thereof connected to the slides and the opposite end working in brackets 19. The slides K are formed with slots q, so as to straddle the shaft r of the fans to enable the slides to be closed, or partially closed, over the openings communicating with the sides thereof. A setscrew, 8, holds the rods 0 in the position placed, and also the slides K. The middlings as they pass from the reelB into hopper L are received by the rotary conveyer M and conveyed in the direction indicated by the arrows, Fig. 2, to the discharge-spout t.
Below the conveyer M is a partition, N,having a series of openings, a, each of which is closed by a slide, n. Any of these slides may .be drawn to admit'of the middlings passing through the openings at to the conveyer P, which conveys the middlings in the opposite direction to the conveyer M, as indicated by arrows.
The spout to under the conveyor P is for the purpose of taking off middlings to return to feed-spout at the head of the machine, if so desired; and the hopper R is for the purpose of c d e are of difi'erent diameters, so that they 1 carrying oft tailings from the machine.
The suction-fans I E are arranged upon the same shaft, and each performs its separate function of creating a current of air through the different parts of the machine to carry with it the impurities from the middlings, as hereinbefore described.
The chest A has doors S T, suitably connected to each side thereof, said doors having glass panels or Windows 3 The slotted slides K are arranged to operate in extensions W, connected to the side of the suction-fans.
The machine and the several operating parts may be driven by the common belts, pulleys, and gearing usually employed in this class of machines, and therefore a detailed description of this part of the machine is considered unnecessary.
The several parts of the machine are supported upon a suitable frame-work, Y.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of fans E I, slides K,reel B, air-conductor G, and the chest A, having openings 70 land slides m, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The adjustable feed-spout consisting of the sections 0 d e, constructed as described, in combination with the conical spreader F, adapted to be adjusted vertically, as and for the purpose specified.
