Description

L. H O P P E MITER GAUGE March 20, 1951 Original Filed Nov. 6, 1 948 H il I II Ventor Leo Hoppe My 3 I 'torne s Patented Mar. 20, 1951 Original application November 6, 1948, Serial No.
784,372. Divided and this application September 21, 1949, Serial No. 117,024
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in miter gauges for use especially, although not necessarily, in determining the angle of oblique sided printers copy preparatory to making a printing chase for oblique sided printing forms according to the method disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 784,372, filed November 6, 1948, now Patent No. 2,492,289, patented December 27, 1949, and of which the instant application is a division.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a simple form of miter gauge which is designed for easy, quick use for the purpose specified and may be manufactured at a low cost.
Other and subordinate objects, within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure l is a view in plan of my improved miter gauge applied; a
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the miter gauge drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 3 is a view in edge elevation of the same; and
Figure 4 is a view in front end elevation of the same.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals, my improved miter gauge, designated as a unit by the numeral I, comprises a substantially rectangular, elongated body panel 2 with a leading front end edge 3 and a levelling side edge 4. The panel 2 is provided with a thickened rear end portion whichinay be formed by a substantially square bottom block 5 secured by corner screws 6 therein to what constitutes the bottom face of said panel 2. Forwardly of the block 5, a fiat gauging segment I with a straight gauging edge 8 is pivoted on the front end corner 9 of said panel 2 remote from the levelling side edge 4, for rotation on said panel 2 in engagement with the bottom face of said panel, said segment I clearing the block 5 with its gauging edge 8 adapted to extend forwardly of the leading end edge 3 of said panel 2 in diiferent set positions of said segment. The pivot for said segment I comprises a suitable bolt I with a wing nut II and washer I2 thereon on the top face of said panel 2 for clamping said segment I to the bottom of said panel 2 in difierent set positions. The segment I is of the same thickness as the block so that when said gauge l is laid on a table, bottom face 2 downward, it will lie flat on the table. The corner 9 is rounded to clear the gauging edge 8.
The body panel 2 is formed with a longitudinal bend or bulge I8 extending across said panel between the bolt I0 and the arcuate edge of the segment I and bowed away from said segment, and said panel 2 is formed of slightly resilient material, whereby, when the segment 1 is clamped in set position, the bend I8 will tend to flatten out and cause the panel 2 to frictionally grip the segment I at one side of the bolt l0 and frictionally lock said segment in set position.
In using the described miter gauge forthe purpose specified, the angle of the margin side edge I4 of the copy sheet I3 is determined by placing said sheet flat on a table IS with the bottom end of said sheet against a straight edge I'I, then placing the body panel 2 bottom side down on the table l6 with the levelling edge 4 against said straight edge I1, and then setting the gauging segment I to fit the gauging edge 8 thereof against one margin side edge M of said sheet. This gives the angle for the side edge of a printing form set up according to the copy sheet l3, and the angle for the sides of the printing chase.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A mitering gauge for use on a flat base with a straight edge on the base and to find the angle of a side edge of a sheet of printers copy imposed on said base with one end against said straight edge, said gauge comprising-an elongated substantially rectangular body havin a thickened substantially square rear end portion with a bottom face and adapted to be imposed on said base with one side edge engaged with said straight edge, and a fiat segmental gauging member with a straight gauging edge pivoted on said body forwardly of said thickened portion for rotationto engage said gaugin edge with said edge of the copy, said pivot including means for clamping said segment to said body in different set positions, said segment fitting against said body with a bottom face flush with the bottom of said thickened portion so that said gauge will lie flat and level on said base with the said segment lying on the base, said body having an intermediate bend therein extending from one side to the other of said body opposite said segment and being bowed away from the same and resilient for straightening out when said segment is clamped to said body, whereby to cause said body to frictionally engage and lock said segment in set position.
