2 Claims. (C1. 160-178) The present invention relates to Venetian blinds and more particularly to bottom rail construction and the association of the bottom rail with the tapes and cords of such devices.
An object of this invention is to provide a novel and improved bottom rail for a Venetian blind, which affords easy and secure attachment of the cords and tapes thereto.
Another object hereof is to provide a bottom rail of the character mentioned, of novel and improved construction, which is made of sheet metal or the like and which requires no screws, staples or other similar means for attachment of the tapes and cords thereto.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved bottom rail which is simple in construction, reasonably cheap to manufacture, and eiiicient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed. Y
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as this disclosure proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Fig. 1 is a front view of the lower portion of a Venetian blind, including a bottom rail embodying the teachings of this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged exploded perspective View showing the components of said bottom rail and the manner in which the tapes are prepared to facilitate secure attachment of such tapes to said rail upon assembly of said components. This view is fragmentary.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged end view of the left lower portion of Fig. 1, omitting a cap which may be included to cover the end of the bottom rail.
In the drawings, the numeral l5 designates generally a Venetian blind having the bottom rail I6, the slats l1, the cords I8 and I8 and the tapes I9 and I9. Said bottom rail I6, which preferably is of sheet material as metal having some resilient quality, is essentially an elongated tubular structure which may be composed of a channel member 20 covered by a slat 2|, the longitudinal edges of which slat sit in the opposite channels 22 and 22 formed longitudinally along the side walls of said channel member 20. In the Venetian blind assembly, the bottom rail i6 may be positioned with channel 20 inverted, and of course horizontally. The slat 2| may be slight- 1y transversely arched, so that it may be easier to snap t said slat 2|, into the channels 22 and 22. A properly positioned hole 23 is prof vided in the wall of the bottom rail I6, for each cord; the lower end of each cord passing through the hole provided for same, and knotted as at 24 within the lower rail I6.
The assembly of the bottom rail I6 and its association with the tapes I9 and I9' in the embodiment shown, is effected by placing the channel member 20 between each pair of tapes I9 and I9', so that it be in symmetry horizontally with respect to the slats I1. The holes 23 are at positions in registry with the ends of the cords I-B and I8 respectively.. Said cords are pulled through these holes and their bottom ends knotted as at 24. The bottom ends of each of the tapes is preferably made with a hem 25 by a line of stitches 26, with the bend-up ply of the hem away from the lower rail I6. The hems 25 of the several tapes are set upwardly into the channel member 20, and finally the slat 2l is snapped into thechannels 22 and 22', whereby the tapes at regions adjacent the hem, are secured to the assembled bottom rail I6. It is evident that said tapes cannot work loose, because the hems prevent their withdrawal, and especially so, due to the action ofthe edge 21 acting as a stop against the longitudinal edge of the slat 2|. Further to be noted, is that the tapes are clamped into assembly.
If desired, a plug, cap or cover, plain or ornamented, indicated by the numeral 21, may be in any 'suitable manner secured at the ends of the bottom rail 20.
This invention is capable of numerous forms and various adaptations, and is of course adaptable to Venetian blinds having a multiplicity of tapes and cords, without departing from the essential features herein disclosed. It is therefore intended and desired that the embodiment shown herein be deemed illustrative and not restrictive and that the patent shall cover all patentable novelty herein set forth; reference being had to the following claims rather than to the speciiic description herein to indicate the scope of this invention.
I claim:
1. In a Venetian blind including cords and tapes, a bottom rail comprising a channel member and a cover member engagingly positioned on the channel member and forming an elongated hollow casing therewith; the bottom ends of the tapes being positioned between said members intermediate the ends of said members and clampedY REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the le of this patent:
