In Sweden February 25, 1944 r Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires February 25, 1964 2 Claims. l This invention relates to a device for sewing machines comprising a holder with a U-shaped hook which is fixed to the presser foot bar of a sewing machine and which U-shaped hook is adjusted in such a manner that the presser foot of the sewing machine is raised during a part of the movement of the needle-bar, so that the fabric to be sewn will thereby be released for a moment during each upward movement of the needle-bar. It is then possible to displace the fabric and easily and rapidly to effect `darning by means of the swing machine and further-more to make elastic zigzag sewings or seams or other desired sewing Operations which it is otherwise impossible to make by means of a sewing machine of the usual type.

The accompanying drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention. Figs. 1 and 3 show a part of a sewing machine provided with a hook member according to the invention, in front and in rear elevation. Fig. 2 shows the machine in front elevation the hook member being in operative position, and Figs. 4 and show in detail the hook member, as seen obliquely from above and obliquely from below.

According to the invention there is fixed to the presser foot a U-shaped holder 9 by means of a screw H (Fig. 3) arranged on the presser foot in the usual manner, which screw is first removed and, after the holder 9 has been mounted, is passed through a hole ll] in one end |9 of the holder (Figs. 4 and 5) and is then tightei'ed and maintains the holder in the position shown in Figs. 1 to 3. In the other end I& of the holder there is fixed a rivet !2 with a large inwardly directed head !3 below which there is tightly rotatably fixed an eye M formed on the bent end |5 of a U-shaped hook IS having its free end I'l bent to serve as a finger grip for adjustment of the U-shaped hook !6.

When the U-shaped hook IE is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the sewing machine can be; used for ordinary sewing purposes. It is hereby possible to efiect'zigzag sewing operations or seams by means of the sewing machine, e. g. zigzag seams as running lines for elastics or elastic seams in underwear, mending across hole edges or similar work. The presser foot will fall down on the fabric and hold it when the needleagain passes through the fabric. The U- shaped hook !6 may be turned more or less downwardly and be bent together or stretched out,

since it is made oi a resilient metal wire, and it is thus possible to regulate the distance to which the presser foot may be raised and the U-shaped hook can be arranged to fit difierent sizes and types of sewing machines.

The device' may also be constructed in a manner other 'than that shown, without departing from the idea of invention. Thus the fitting may possibly be made adjustable so as to enable arrangement thereof on presser feet of different constructions or on the needle-bar. The U- shaped means may be made of several parts, adjustable in relation to each other, in order to abut against parts of the needle-bar or the presser foot for causing said presser foot to partake in the movement of the needle-bar during a certain part of the motion of the needle.

I claim:

1. A device for sewing machines having a needle-bar and presser foot on a presser foot bar comprising a U-shaped holder removably attached to said presser foot bar, said holder being attached to said bar by means oi the screw attaching said presser foot to said bar, a rivet having an enlarged head attached to said holder on the side opposite the side attached to said presser bar, said enlarged head being arranged internally of said U-shaped holder, a U-shaped hook having an eye formed at one end thereof, said eye being tightly rotatably j ournalled on said rivet between a side of said holder and said enlarged head, said U-shaped hook member being adjustably rotatable to contact with said needlebar whereby upon upward movement of said needle-bar said hook member will be contacted thereby and said presser foot bar and said presser foot will be raised with said needle-bar.
