SEAT FOR PATENT OFFICE..

VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,412, dated February 28, 1882,
Application filed December 10, 1881.
l To all whom it may concern seats for vehicles; and it consists in making the frame or support for each end ot' the seat of an iron casting, which is provided with suitable flanges around its edges for the purpose of strengthening the frame or support, and which has pivoted uponits lower edge a suitable clamping or other fastening device for the purpose ot' securing the seat in place upon the top of the wagon-bed.
The object of my invention is to provide a light, strong, and ornamental support for the seat, which will form a permanent means of advertising.
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective.
A represents the frame or support, which is to be secured to each end of the seat, and
' which is formed of a light metallic casting, of
which the name or the initials ot' a name will form a permanent part, as shown. By thus casting the name or the initials as a part of the framein light ornamental open-work the seat forms a permanent means ot advertising for the manufacturer or any other. person or thing that may be preferred. Upon the top of this frame or support, on its inner side, is formed the ange B,which is preferablymade wider atits ends than the center, and through which flange are made suitable bolt-holes, through which the clamping-bolts which fasten the seat and the support together are passed. Around the inside edges of both ends and the bottom of the frame are formed the flanges C, which serve to brace and strengthen the frame.
Projecting down from the lian ge which is made along the inside bottom edge of the frame is the support D, which has its lower (No model.)
l end turned at right angles, so as to extend hori zontally outward for the purpose ot' having the clamping or fastening device S pivoted to it. In order to strengthen this support for the clamping device, there is a dange, Gr, at each of its ends, which extends inward from `the frame and at right angles to it, and which .flange projects down over the side ofthe support, as shown, so as to brace and strengthen the support against the pressure of the clampingdevice that is brought to bear upon it. These two anges Gr extend a considerable distance above the bottom ange of the frame, and extend inward from the frame the same distance that the bottom of the support is turned outward.
The fastening or 'clamping devices by means the wagon-bed may consist of a simple cam,
that maybe preferred. When the frame which supports each end of the seat is placed upon the top ofthe wagon-bed the support to which the fastening device is pivoted projects downward inside of the bed a suitable distance, so
-upon it. The fasteningdevice must first be turned outward, so as to allow the support to sink down inside of the bed, and by turning the device in such a manner that its cam end will catch againstthe side of the bed the frame will be locked rigidly in place. Also, projecting downward from the rear end oi' the frame A is a suitable lip or projection, I2, which also catches inside ot' the Wagon-bed while the lower dat edge of the frame A is resting upon the top edge of the bed, and thus serves to hold the seat always in position.
The frame or support for a wagon-seat constructed as above described is very light, strong, and durable, and serves as apermanent means of advertising, as described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A frame or support for the end of a wagon`seat, provided with a wide flange upon its top edge, through which the clamping-bolts are passed, and with a strengtheuing-tlange around its other edges, and suitable locks or projections for extending down inside ot' the of which the frame is fastened to the top of as here shown, or may be of any construction., 7o
that the fastening device can get agood hold IOO Wagon-bed, one of which forms a support for In testimony whereof I affix my signature the clamping device which fastens the seat in in presence of three Witnesses.
position, substantially as described. T
2. A metallic frame or support for one end OLIX! ER VANORMAN' 5 of a Wagon-seat, having the support for the VVtHeSSeS:
clamping device in a single piece with it and I L. H. MILLER,
the support braced by the Bauges G, substanl E. F. SMITH,
tially as set forth. JOHN HORNER.
