UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM PIERPONT, OF SALEM, NEW JERSEY.
TH RASHER AND SEPARATOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 254,238, dated February 28, 1882.
Application filed March 29, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom ti may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PIERPONT, of Salem, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thrashers and Separators, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements consist in a modification of the thrashing-cylinder, and in certain modifications and additions to the separator and riddle-shoe.
In the following description of the construction reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical l0n .gitudinal section on line a m, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a
plan of the machine with cover of beater-cylinderremoved; Fig. 3, horizontal section above the shoe g, showing its connections with the fan-shaft.
The thrashingcylinder a is armed with beater-teeth a, projecting from its periphery, and in addition thereto the cylinder at is formed with certain horizontal grooves in its periphery, extending from end to end. O'ne face of the grooves is on the radial line of the cylinder, the other being beveled off, as is clearly seen in Fig. 1. This is intended to draw the dust from the machine during its operation, throwing it out with the straw. This cylinder is surmounted by a narrow toothed breast or concave, 111, between which and the cylinder-teeth the straw is thrashed, while thegrooved cylinder drives a strong current of air through the short open 'space between this narrow breast and the cylinder, that removes the dust from the operator, which dust is intercepted by the concave plate 11 and directed forward, which would not be the case if the concave were a large concave surrounding a greater portion of the cylinder.
I place a concave plate, b, just in rear of the cylinder and tangentially thereto, over which the'straw, 850., pass, catching the straw, grain, &c., and conveying it to the separator, which is composed of two parts--a screen, 0, above, and a seed-carrier, d, below-each being hung at the front end by suspensionrods and at the rear end on a crank-shaft, its cranks being opposite, so as to cause screen 0 to fall as d rises, and vice versa. As in my.
former patent there is a series of rows of oblong holes, e, in c, ,(seeFig. 2,) androws of pins f project up from carrier 61 into them, so that when screen 0 descends and moves backward by the action of its supporting-crank carrier d rises, thrusting the pins f up through the holes a, and, moving them forward while screen 0 is receding, lightens up the straw and moves it continually forward. As carrier 01 descends screen 0 rises and moves forward, while the pins f, drawn below the surface of screen 0, move backward. v
The shoe g, holding the riddles, instead of being suspended in the usual way, is attached to the frame at the end next the fan by hingejoints h or springs at its center, on which itis pivoted and entirely supported, so as to be vibrated from side to side by means of two rigidly-attached connecting-rods, c i, Fig. 3, connecting it with cranks on opposite sides of the fan-shaft k. This arrangement and movement of the parts gives great strength and durability to the working-points and efficiency to the action of the shoe.
I do notclaim a thrashing-cylinder with ribs or grooves formed on its periphery to act as beaters, as that has before been done; but,
Having thus described my improvements in machine for thrasher and separator, I claim 1. The combination of a horizontal grooved thrashing-cylinder, having teeth on its periphery, with a narrow-toothed concave or breast, m, located above it, where-the grain is thrashed, and means for intercepting the graindust, &c., passing from the cylinder, for the purpose and in themanner specified.
2. In combination with parts 0 d of the separator, moving in opposite directions to each other, the pinsf, affixed toda-nd moving through oblong-slots in c, in the manner and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, in a riddle-shoe having the central suspension at the rear of the sta- L'CO
