TE STATES OFFI E NEEDLE FOR SEWING BRAD) on Tn Eng-E Joseph V. Perhacs, Sun Valley, ,Galif.
Application December 9, 2 9 .Sflfi?! NO: 1 15954 This invention has to do with a needle useful in sewing braids, cords or like strips together as in the making of rugs, pads, or like articles and it is a general object of the invention to provide such a needle which is simple and inexpensive of manufacture and convenient and effective in use.
Strips of material such as cords .or braided strips are commonly sewed together into the form of rugs, pads and like articles. Ordinary thread is usually used in such operations and it is common to handle the threads by an ordinary needle such as is used in ordinary sewing operations. Thread is used rapidly in a sewing operation where cords or braids are being joined and when the usual needle is employed the operator must handle a long length of thread or must frequently rethread the needle.
The present invention provides a needle for handling thread which needle is suitable for the class of use above referred to and is such as to carry a supply of thread enabling an operator to sew for a considerable length of time without changing thread or rethreading the needle. The invention provides a needle with an elongate body having an eye holding the free end portion of the thread and having heads at the ends of the body, which heads are preferably alike and each has an upturned tip portion shaped to conveniently penetrate braid or cord. Each head of the needle is provided with a thread carrying opening and a thread passing neck opening enters each head from its tip or nose end with the result that a thread can be readily passed into and out of the thread carrying opening as the needle is loaded or is being used.
The needle constructed as provided by the invention has the free end of a thread held in the eye and a substantial length of thread is wrapped on the needle lengthwise thereof being entered through the neck openings and carried in the thread carrying openings. As the needle is used the tip portions are exposed to readily penetrate the material being sewed and as the sewing progresses the needle is turned endwise or end for end allowing the thread to be payed therefrom as thread is consumed.
A general object of the invention is to provide a needle which is double ended and which carries a supply of thread in a compact form and so that the thread can be easily and conveniently fed from the needle as sewing progresses making it unnecessary for the operator to manipulate a long cumbersome length .of free thread, as is the case when an ordinary needle is used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a needle of the general character referred to which is such that it can .be economically manufactured of an elongate strip or band of metal, or the like, making the needle inexpensive oi manufacture.
2 Claims. (Cl. 223x192) A further object of the invention is to provide a needle of the general character referred to which the heads that occur on the ends of the body and which have openings to carry thread have upturned tip portions that are such as to conveniently feed or thread through layers of a braided strip, or the like.
'The various objects and features of my invention will be fully understood from the fol- :lowing detailed description of a typical preferred form and application'of my invention, throughout which description reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l a view showing the needle provided by the present invention carrying a supply of thread and being used in the course of sewing two lengths of braid together in side by side relationship. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the needle provided by the invention showing it earrying a supply of thread. Fig. .3 is an enlarged detailed transverse sectional view taken as indicated by line -33 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the needle showing itfree of thread.
The needle provided by this invention is intended to carry a supply of thread which is to be consumed as the sewing operation progresses and it is intended primarily for use in coarse or heavy sewing operations as where cords or braided strips are to be sewed together as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The needle provided by this invention involves, generally, an elongate body A and head B at the ends of the body. It is preferred in practice that the needle be formed entirely of a single integral continuous strip of material in which case the heads B are in effect continuations of the body A. In the preferred form of the invention the needle is formed of a length or strip of metal, or like material, so that the needle is rigid or normally maintains its shape and can be readily finished so that it is smooth.
Thebody A of the needle as shown in the drawings is a simple straight strip or length of material in the form of a flat strip having fiat parallel sides I!) and parallel edges H. In practice, the body A may be varied considerably in length and also in width, it being preferred, generally, that the body be sufliciently long so that it can be conveniently handled or manipulated as the desired sewing operation is performed and it is of such width as to carry a substantial body of thread T, at the same time, being narrow enough to readily pass through material being sewed. In the drawings, particularly in Fig. 1, the needle is illustrated as being used to sew two lengths C of braid together, the braid being shown as formed or woven of coarse strands in which case the needle body A may be of substantial width and the needle may be such as to handle a substantial supply of thread '1.
A feature of the body A is the eye or opening 15 provided in the body intermediate its ends to receive and holdthe free end portion N5 of the thread 'I. In the case illustrated the eye [5 is shown as a'sir'nple round opening or perforation located intermediate the edges I! and extending through the body from one side to the other. In practice, the free or terminal end 16 of the thread T is inserted through the eye as will be apparent from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings and as thread is wound onto the needle the end portion threaded through the eye is retained so the thread is effectively confined to the body of the needle.
The,heads B that are provided at or which project from the ends of body A are preferably like extensions or continuations of body A. Each head is provided with a tip portion 20 which is fiat and which is preferablydefiected somewhat from the plane of the body A. The tip portion 2B in its preferred form is outwardly tapered or convergent so that it has converging straight sides 2| terminating at a penetrating nose portion 22 which may be slightly rounded as shown in the drawings. In practice the shaping and proportioning of the tip 20 and particularly of the nose portion of the tip may vary depending upon the type or character of work to be performed by the needle. For sewing coarse material such as braid as illustrated in the drawings the tip 20 .may be tapered substantially as shown in Fig. 4
and the needle will effectively penetrate the braid when the nose end 22 is rounded as shown in this figure.
In accordance with the invention each head-B of the needle is provided with a thread carrying opening 25 shaped and proportioned to carry a substantial quantity of thread at a point removed somewhat inward from the nose portion of the tip 20. In the preferred form of the invention the thread carrying opening 25 is located centrally of the needle and extends a substantial distance lengthwise thereof as clearly shown in Fig.1 4 of the drawings.
A neck opening enters the tip portion 20 of the head from the nose 22 thereof and communicates with the thread carrying'opening 25. .The neck opening 30 is preferably made just wide enough to conveniently pass the thread into and out of the opening 25.
To prepare the needle for use the free or.terminal end [6 of the thread is passed through the eye l5 of the body and then the desired supply of thread T is wound onto the needle to form bundles that extend lengthwise of the body A at iii) then passing it through the layers, folds, or
strips of material that are to be sewed together. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, the use of the loaded needle is illustrated, and it will be apparent from this drawing how the needle can be handled with a limited free loop 3| of thread. In the case of a typical use after one or two passages of the needle through the material being threaded the needle may be turned end for end liberating the necessary amount of thread to form the desired loop 3 I. As the sewing progresses the supply of thread is liberated from the needle and with very little practice an operator can maintain the desired loop 30 without at any time having an excess of thread free to be tangled or to be in the way while at the same time the needle is at all times free for convenient and rapid manipulation.
When the supply of thread has been exhausted from the needle a new supply can be applied and the sewing operation continued. With the needle of the present invention a very substantial quantity of thread can be carried on the needle so that sewing can be continued for a substantial time without the necessity of replenishing the supply of thread.
Having described only a typical preferred form and application of my invention, I do not wish to be limited or restricted to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any variations or modifications that may appear to those skilled in the art and fall Within the scope of the following claims:
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A needle of the character described including, a flat, straight, elongate, slender body uniform in cross-sectional configuration throughout its length, like heads at the ends of the body, there being a thread carrying opening at each end of the body and a neck opening in each head communicating with a thread carrying opening and passing thread to and from such thread carrying opening, each head having a tip portion with a rounded end and being inclined relative to the plane of the body and from the said side thereof, the neck openings being open to the exterior of the needle at the tip ends thereof.
2. A needle of the character described including, a straight flat elongate body uniform in cross-sectional configuration from one end to the other, there being a thread carrying opening at each end of the body with a concave thread receiving bottom, a fiat convergent head on each end of the body with a rounded tip end, the heads being alike and being in planes inclined relative to that of the body and projecting from one side of the body, there being outwardly convertent neck openings extending outwardly from the thread carrying openings to the tip ends of the heads where they open at the exterior of the needle.
