The invention relates to a typewriter having a carriage with a platen and a ribbon feed mechanism of known construction.
The invention relates more particularly to typewriters of the said type adapted for the use of bookkeeping having a device to write simultaneously on a plurality of sheets of which one is a ground sheet or record sheet and two others are loose or account sheets which are frequently to be replaced.
The main object of the invention consists in the provision of a device of the kind aforesaid in which the two account sheets are both Written upon by means of ribbons.
In the accompanying drawing an embodiment of the invention is shown by way of an example in a diagrammatical manner.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the device and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section showing the guides for the sheets and the ribbons.
Fig. 4 shows the device in a perspective view.
In the drawings W denotes the platen which is rotatably mounted in the carriage 2 of a typewriter in the well known manner. Above the platen W and in side walls of the carriage 2 a shaft l is rockinglymounted on which a frame 2 is fastened. In the frame 2' two guide-ways are arranged comprising a division wall 5 and two side walls running parallel to each other and to said division wall 5. The walls 3, 4 and 5 stand upright, they are slidably arranged on a bar I2 of the frame 2 and form channels or guide-ways i5, iii one on each Side of the division wall 5. The guide-ways are open at the top and at the lower end, and the walls 3, 4 and 5 end in front ci the platen W above the ribbons F and 8. By the guide-ways i5 and i6 the sheets J1 and J 2 are fed by their own weight into their position between the ribbons F and 8; and between the ribbon ai and a carbon sheet K running above the paper record sheet G over the platen W, The ribbon 8 projects with its upper edge in a groove H of the division wall 5. The ribbon B runs in guides 9, it, and follows the walls 3, 4, 5 when the latter swing about shaft I over spools 6, 'i rotatably mounted on the carriage 2.
In writing, the sheet J1 and the sheet J2 are written upon by the use of the ribbons F and 8. Simultaneously the sheet G is Written on by making use of the carbon sheet K. The latter is fed in the well known manner together with sheet G by turning step by step the platen W.
By inserting the sheets J1 and J2 into the guide ways l5 and it the sheets pass automatically to their proper position with reference to the carbon ribbons F, E and carbon sheet K.
If only one of the sheets J1 or J2 is to be written upon the said sheet will be inserted into the guide way I5. The sheet is written upon by 2 making use of the ribbon F while the ribbon 8 is used to write on the sheet G, the ribbon 8 being guided in the groove E l.
What I Wish to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
1. In a typewriting machine having a carriage in which a platen is rotatably mounted, a shaft rockingly mounted in said carriage above said platen, a frame secured to said shaft, said frame being provided with two guideways for the reception of record sheets and for guiding them to a place in iront of said platen, said guideways being formed by a central division wall and two side -walls spaced from opposite sides of said division wall and arranged parallel thereto, said guideways being open at their top and their lower ends, means for guiding a ribbon in front of said platen, means for guiding a second ribbon between said rst named ribbon and said platen, the lower end of said central division wall having a longitudinal groove for receiving one longitudinal edge of said second ribbon and for guiding the latter in spaced relation behind said rst named ribbon.
2. In a typewriting machine having a carriage in which a platen is rotatably mounted, a shaft rockingly mounted in said carriage above said platen, a frame secured to said shaft, said frame being provided with two guideways for the reception of record sheets and for guiding them to a place in front of said platen, said guideways being formed by a central division wall and two side walls spaced from opposite sides of said division wall and arranged parallel thereto, said guideways being open at their top and their lower ends, means for guiding a ribbon in front of said platen, and in front of a record sheet which is discharged from the lower end of one of said guideways, and a longitudinal groove in the lower edge portion of said central division wall for guiding a second ribbon in spaced relation behind the rst named ribbon and behind the rst named record sheet, said second ribbon being arranged to lie in front of the record sheet which is discharged from the lower end ofv the other guideway.
