Application November 25, 1947, Serial No. 787,966

2 Claims.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in toothbrushes of the so-called fountain type wherein a hollow handle or the like serves as a container for a tube of tooth paste and manually operable means is provided to progressively compress and squeeze the paste from the tube and to deliver it to the customary bristles for ready and convenient use, it being the principal obiect of the invention to structura ly, functional y and otherw se improve upon similarly constructed brushes with which we are familiar.

As the opening statement of the in ention implies, we are aware that the art to which the invention relates is made up of var ed tvpes of fountain and dispens ng brushes. Therefore, in carrying out the principles of the present invention, we seek to add a further contribution to the art in the form of a dis ensing brush which,

we believe, is more a tly suited to accomplish results desired by both manufacturers and users.

In carrying out our invention, we provide a simple and practical brush which is constructed of a pair of complemental sections, said sections serving to define a hollow container, providing both head and handle, and serving to effectively house nozzle means in the head, a readily insertible and movable tooth paste tube, and a sl dahly mounted follower which, when properly operated, serves to effectively and progressively compress and express the paste for delivery to the bristles.

Other objects and advantages will become more readi y apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:

Figure l is a side elevational view of a dispensing or fountain-type toothbrush constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention.

Figure 2 is a view like Figure 1 but showing the cover sections swung to open position.

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the brush shown in Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the same.

Figures 5, 6 and '7 are enlarged fragmentary sectional and elevational views serving to more effectively illustrate the details of construction,

Figures 5 and 7 being on the lines 5-5 and 1-1 of Figure 3.

Figure 8 is a cross section on the line 8-8 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Referring now to the drawings by distinguishing reference numerals it will be seen that the body portion is of sectional construction to provide a hollow two-part casing Iii. Said casing includes a bottom or receptacle section H and a complemental cover section E2. The outer ends of said section are fashioned as at It and I4 to provide a head for the customary bristles l5. The outer end of the head portion i3 is provided with a pair of spaced lugs Hi to accommodate an intervening lug ll, said lugs being pivotally connected together as at 8. Thus the two sections are suitably hinged to one another. The inner end of the cover section is provided with a spring clip l9 which is releasably engageable with the detent 20 on the receptacle section whereby to appropriately connect the two sections together in handle forming relationship. The numeral 2! denotes an eye which may be employed to suspend the brush, when not in use, from a suitable wall supporting hook or the like (not shown).

The receptacle section I l is provided with diametrical y opposte elongated accommodation and guide slots 22 to accommodate extending end portions 23 on a slide shaft 24 constituting a part of the hand operated ejector 25. The ejector is of the usual follower-type and embodies a plate which is shaped and angled to press against the compressible tooth paste tube 26 in a manner to compress and express the paste therefrom. To facilitate operation, the end portions of the shaft are provided with finger grips or knobs 21.

The usual screw threaded discharge neck 28 on the tube is threaded into a screw threaded socket 29 carried by the inner end of a paste delivery and feeder tube 30. The latter is mounted in the body and head portions of the casing as shown and has a lateral discharge terminal 3! (see Figure '7) which is lodged in an aperture provided in the head portion. An opening in the head portion I3 is provided with an annular shoulder or ledge 32 to accommodate the discharge terminal 3! and a washer 33. The discharge terminal is provided, in turn, with a screw threaded neck 34 which carries an appropriate delivery nozzle 35 situated to effectively and uniformly deliver the tooth paste to the bristles.

In practice, the tube of tooth paste is placed in the receptacle portion II in an obvious manner and the neck 28 is screwed into the socket 29. The ejector is placed at the right hand end of the slot 22 and the cover is closed and latched in place. Now the brush is ready for use. Obviously, by grasping the knobs or finger grips 2? the ejector is moved, in shoe-like fashion from right to left, and in so doing, the deflected plate 25 comes into action and serves as an expressing cam. That is to say, it rides in contact with the tube of tooth paste and by squeezing the tube forces the paste into the delivery tube 39 and finally expunges the paste through the nozzle Where it is taken up, by the bristles, for use.

Changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of details and parts may be resorted to in actual practice, so long as they do not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims, as is well understood.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. A dispensing type toothbrush of the class shown and described comprising an elongated hollow casing formed into a brush head at one end and a handle at the opposite end, said casing being made up of a receiver section and a complemental cover section, said sections being of lengths equal to each other and being hingedly connected to one another at corresponding ends, said head portion being provided with bristles, a paste delivery tube attached at one end to said head portion and including a discharge nozzle located in close proximity to said bristles for delivering paste to the bristles, the intake end of said delivery tube being in communication with said handle portion, said receiver section being provided with longitudinally extending diametrically opposite slots, and an ejector slidably mounted in said receiver section and including a presser plate with one end portion slidable in the receiver section and the other end portion slidable in the cover section, said plate being provided on opposite edge portions with outstanding stub-shafts, said stub-shafts being slidable in said diametrically opposite slots and each stub-shaft having a finger gripping knob.

2. A fountain-type toothbrush of the class shown and described comprising a hollow elongated casing fashioned at one end into a bristle 49 equipped head and having its opposite end portion fashioned to form a handle, said casing being made up of a receiver section and a complemental cover section, said sections being hingedly connected with each other at the outer end of said head, detent means connected with and latching the remainin ends of the two sections together, an L-shaped paste delivery tube having a nozzle at one end and a screw-threaded socket at the other end, the nozzle end being anchored in the head for coaction with said bristles and having its socket end situated to accommodate the usual screw-threaded discharge neck of a conventional collapsible type toothpaste tube, said receiver section being provided with a pair of longitudinally extending diametrically opposite guide slots, and a tube engaging paste expressing ejector unit comprising a plate having a half portion slidable in the receiver section and a half portion slidable in the cover section and further including stub-shafts, said stubshafts extending through and outwardl beyond the said slots, and finger gripping knobs on said stub shafts.
