Application August 11, 1949, Serial No. 109,784
, 1' This invention relates to new and improved manicuring devices and the principal object of the invention resides in the provision of an im plement of the class described which is inexpensive to manufacture, small enough to be cas- 7 Claims. (CI. 13.2-75.4)
ily kept in a vest pocket or a small purse, easily operated for a variety of actions to completely manicure the nails, and being safe to useand sanitary in nature.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the class described comprising a generally box-like, elongated body having a slider therein, said slider embodying a cutting edge which is selectively exposed for cuticle manicuring operations or retracted within the body where it is safely housed, said slider being actuated by means of an exterior easily operated finger piece, said fingerv operated element embodying a safe and sanitary finger-nail cleaning point and a device for cuticle care-the latter being hollowed out to suit the curve of 1.
the fingernail and curved to render it easier to care for the cuticle; the provision of a device as aforesaid including a pair of removable nail files or emery boards located in the sides of the boxlike body and being easilyremovable for replacement; and the provision of the device as above described including easily releasable latch means for maintaining the cuticle cuttingkniie edge in housed condition or selectively in ex tended operative condition.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had 'to the accompanying drawings in which a a Fig. 1 is a view inside elevation of a device according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device;
Fig. 4 is an end view of the finger operated element;
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3;
which is shorter than the body and is adapted to extend outwardly therefrom as shown at 14 in Fig. 1; or selectively to be housed therewithin as shown at 16 in the same figure. Actually the blade is sharp along an edge I 8 and it will be: clear that this edge may be conveniently used to cut the cuticle while holding the device in the fingers but that the sharp edge It will be safely housed when not needed.
A bottom cover member 20 may be utilized and the end of the body l0 opposite the extendin blade at 18 is closed as shown at 22. The end ofthe body opposite the closed end 22 is provided with a closed end which, however, has a small slot 26 for extension therethrough of the knife edge [8. 4 a The body IE] is slotted'in its top surface :to-accommodate a fastener generally indicated at 2 8, this fastener extending through a manually operable slider element 30 and is secured to the knife blade i2. This fastener is herein shown as taking the form of a screw but of course any other device could be used. Y The finger operated slider element 36 is provided at one end with a relatively blunt point 32 for the purpose of cleaning the nails and at the same-time shielding and guarding the knife edge 18 as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 5. In-other words, the slider 30 may be shifted from 'th'e solid line" position of 'Fig. 1 to the right'to; the broken line position thereof wherein'the knife edge 18 and the'cleaning point '32 are both exposed; but in this position the knife edge is guarded by the point '32 upon which the forefinger'may be placed to press down upon the device to provide a cutting action by means of the blade edge l8. When in the solid line-po si-tion, however, neither the cleaning point or knife edge are extended sufficiently to be oper ative; but the otherend of the slider 36, as at 34, is operative to form and press the cuticle. The device is adapted to be used upside down and has a hollowed out groove 36 to accommodate the natural shape of the nails so as to better effectuate the cuticle forming and pressing operation.
Between the body l0 and the finger slider element 3!! there may be arranged an inter-engaging rib and groove construction 38 for restraining the sliding action of the member 30 to a rectilinear motion. At the sides of the body l0 there are arranged a pair of files or emery boards 40, or one of each, which may be snapped out of the undercut grooves provided therefor and are easily replaceable.
Any convenient means may be provided for holding the nail cleaner point 32 and knife edge I8 yieldably in housed and extended. conditions and in the present instance, this takes the form a) of a projection 42 located on the underside of the slider 38 and cooperating with a pair of dents in the top surface of the body to yieldingly hold the slider in either one of the above described positions.
It will be seen that this invention provides a relatively simple inexpensive manicuring implement of the class described which in a very simple manner may accomplish all of. the desired functions in order to adequately care for the nails, and at the same time the device may be carried in the vest pocket or in a small purse or wallet so as to be convenient at all times.
Having thus described our invention and the advantages thereof, we do not Wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what we claim is:
l. A manicuring device of the class described comprising a body portion, a sharp edged blade slidable with respect thereto for selective positioning wholly in or partially out of the body, a, finger piece connected to the blade to slide the latter, said finger piece being slidable on the body, and an end portion of the finger piece overlying the exposed part of the blade.
2. A manicuring device of the class described comprising a body portion, a sharp edged blade slidable with respect thereto for selective positioning wholly in or partially out of the body, a finger piece connected to the blade to slide the the latter, said finger piece being slidable on the body, and an end portion of the finger piece overlying the exposed part of the blade, said finger piece portion being pointed to act as a manicuring implement.
3. A manicuring device of the class described comprising a body portion, sharp edged blade slidable with respect thereto for selective positioning wholly in or partially out of the body, a finger piece connected to the blade to slide the latter, said finger piece being slidable on the body, an end portion of the finger piece overlying the exposed part of the blade, said finger piece portion being pointed to act as a manicuring implement and the point thereof being inoperatively retracted within the area of the body when the blade is retracted in the body.
4. A manicuring device of the class described comprising a body portion, a sharp edged blade slidable with respect thereto for selective positioning wholly in or partially out of the body, a finger piece connected to the blade to slide the latter, said finger piece being slidable on the body, an end portion of the finger piece overlying the exposed part of the blade, said finger piece portion being pointed to act as a manicuring implement and the point thereof being inoperatively retracted Within the area of the body when the blade is retracted in the body, said finger piece having an opposite end portion of blunt shape, to form the cuticle, in operative position when the blade is retracted.
5. A manicuring device of the class described comprising a body portion, a sharp edged blade slidable with respect thereto for selective positioning wholly in or partially out of the body, a finger piece connected to the blade to slide the latterfsaid finger piece being slidable on the body, .an endpor'tion of the finger piece overlying the exposed part of the blade, and interengaging tongue and groove sliding guides between the fingerpiece and the body.
6. A manicuring device of the class described comprising a body portion, a sharp edged blade slidable with respect thereto for selective positioning wholly in or partially out of the body, a finger piece connected to the blade to slide the latter, said finger piece being slidable on the body, an end portion of the finger piece overlying the exposed part of the blade, and removable nail filing devices at the sides of the body.
7. A manicuring device of the class described comprising a body portion, a sharp edged blade slidable with respect thereto for selective posi tioning wholly in or partially out of the body, a finger piece connected to the blade to slide the latter, said finger piece being slidable on the body, an end portion of the finger piece overlying the exposed part of the blade, said finger piece portion being pointed to act as a manicuring implement and the point thereof being inoperatively retracted within the area of the body when the blade is retracted in the body, said finger piece having an opposite end portion of blunt shape, to form the cuticle, in operative position When the blade is retracted, said cuticle forming means being taperingly concaved to fit a fingernail.
