Description

Patented Dec. 26, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PHONOGRAPH RECORD IDENTIFICATION TAB 2 Claims.
My invention relates to an identification tab for phonograph records.
An important object of the invention is to provide a detachable identification tab for phonograph records which eliminates the need for handling the records while attempting to locate a particular one in a group.
A further object of the invention is to provide i a detachable identification tab for phonograph records which is extremely simple and quite inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention Will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the identification tab shown applied to a record,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the tab removed,
Figure 3 is a view of a partly completed identification tab blank,
Figure 4 is an end edge elevation of the tab as applied in Figure 1.
In the drawings, where for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a thin fiat relatively stiff side or tab body, having inwardly converging side edges 1, and a rounded inner end 8. At its outer end, the side 6 is circularly curved to conforrn to the outside diameter of a standard size phonograph record 9, upon which the tab is to be detachably mounted. At its outer circularly curved end, the side 6 is provided with a pair of short fiat inwardly projecting portions or flaps Ifl, substantially parallel to the plane of side 6 and preferably formed integral therewith. The fiaps IO are elongated laterally with respect to side 6, and are connected to the side 6 through integral U-shaped ends il, forming a substantially continuous circularly curved shoulder to engage the peripheral edge E2 of record 9. The fiaps IO may be tensioned downwardly slightly toward the adjacent surface of side 6, so that the side 6 and the fiaps E0 will tend to engage the faces of record 9 with suflicient force to support the identification tab. The U-shaped ends Il will also tend to produce a clamping or wedging effect upon the edge [2 of record 9, which further facilitates detachably securing the identification tab to the record 9. The flaps H] are cut near the transverse center of side 6 to form a tab handle |3 which is fiat and disposed in the same plane as side 6, and integral with the side.
The handle |3 projects radially beyond the ends ll, as shown, and may be provided with a curved outer end I 4, if desired. The entire tab is formed from a unitary piece of thin stiff sheet material, such as sheet aluminum, or the like. One or both surfaces of side 6 is provided with the name or designation of the particular record to be identified and this information is printed or otherwise visibly marked upon the side 6, as shown in Figure 1.
In use, the identification tab is applied to a phonograph record, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 4. The clamping action of side 6 and flaps l is sufficient to support the weight of the identification tab, and light enough so that the tab will not tend to scratch the record. The downwardly tensioned tabs IH do not project radially inwardly beyond the inner diameter of the smooth outer annular band |5 of record 9, which has no sound grooves formed therein. This design precludes scratching of the sound-grooved portion of the record. When an eifort is being made to locate a record in a group of records, the handle i 3 of the identification tab is grasped and the tab is removed bodily from the record. If the title of the record sought is marked on the tab, the record may be picked up. If the title on the tab is not the one sought, the tab is placed back upon the record and another tab is pulled, until the record sought is located. In this manner, the necessary handling of the records is reduced to a minimum, and this is particularly important in stores Where new records are sold.
It is to be understood that the form of the in- Vention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a prefei'red example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
l. A detachable identification tab for a phonograph record having on either side thereof a smooth outer annular surface band with no sound grooves formcd therein comprising in combination, a thin flat relatively stiif tab body arranged in face adjacency with respect to one side of said record and having side edges converging inwardly from the peripheral edge of the record substantially beyond the inner diameter of the surface band on said one side of the record, a thin fiat relatively stiif flap arranged on the opposite side of the record in face adjacency therewith and substantially parallel to the plane of said tab body, said flap having an outer curved edge corgraph record having on either side Vthrereof a smooth outer annular surface band with no sound grooves formed therein comprising, 'in combina-' z tion, a thin fiat relatively stiff tab body arranged in face adjacency With respect to one side of said record and having side edges converging inwardly from the peripheral edge of the record a substantialrdistance beyond the inner' diameter of the'surface band on said one side of therecord and' terminating 'in a rounded inner edge, a pair of thi'n fiat relatively stif fiaps arranged in circumferentialiy spaced relation on the opposite side of the record in face adjacency therewith andsubstantiaily parallel to the planeof saidtab body, each'of'said'flaps having an outer curved edge corresponding to the peripheral edge of the record and an inner curved edge corresponding to 'the' inner edge of the surface band adjacent th'ereto, apair of U-sha'ped ends respectively inter'conecting 'the outer edges of said fiaps With the 'outer edge of said tab body and each having a's'ubstantially continuous curved shoulder in en- 4 gagement with the peripheral edge of the record, and a tab handle comprising a portion of said tab body projected outwardly therefrom intermedate said fiaps and beyond the peripheral edge of the record, said fiaps and tab body being tensioned slightly toward each other, said U-shaped ends being constructed and arranged to produce a clamping eifectiupon said edge of the record, and said tab body having markings thereon for identifying the record.
