1 Claim. 1

This invention relates to corn knives and has reference to a construction for holding a safety razor blade for trimming corns and callouses. This application is a substitute for my earlier filed application, Serial No. 40,730, filed July 26, 1948, and which became abandoned October 22, 1949.

An object of the invention is to provide a corn knife which is both safe and convenient to use.

A particular object of the invention is to provide a corn knife comprised of a holder for a razor blade wherein the corners of the blade are enclosed so as to prevent the user from inadvertently cutting his skin or tissues other than the corn being trimmed.

Another object of the invention is to provide, in a corn knife, a construction and shape whereby only small amounts of the corn may be trimmed at one time.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a corn knife, an arrangement between the handle and blade whereby the cutting edge of the blade is inclined at a safe cutting angle during the cutting operation.

A further object of the invention is to provide a construction and arrangement whereby conventional disposable safety razor blades may be used in the knife.

These and other objects of the inventio will become apparent from the following description of the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corn knife embodying the features of the present invention.

Figure 2 is an enlarged broken plan view of the knife illustrated in Figure 1, and showing the blade clamp removed.

Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on lines 33 of Figure 2, and

Figure 4 is a plan view of the inner face of the clamp guard.

The illustrated corn knife includes a substantially rectangular head I having a convex outer surface 2. The ends 3 of the head I are wide enough and far enough apart to receive an ordinary disposable double-edged razor blade 4. The ends 3 of the head I are provided with upstanding integral guards or flanges 5, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The sides 6 of the head I between the referred to ends 3 are narrower than the blade 4 so as to expose the cutting edges of the said blade and allow the same to be used in trimming corns, callouses, or the like. The inner face of the head I is provided with a projecting screw 1 which passes through the center of the blade 4 and through a rectangular blade clamp 8 and receives the knurled nut 9. A longitudinal rib I is provided along the inner face of the head I to align the blade 4 by projecting through the slot ll ordinarily provided in such blades. The inner face of the blade clamp 8 is formed with a groove 12 to accommodate the projecting rib H].

A substantially fiat handle it, projects from one end of the head i and is integral therewith, but is disposed at an angle with respect thereto, as particularly illustrated in Figure 3. The purpose of the last described angular handle arrangement is to conveniently disposed of the plane of the blade 6 with respect to the corn being trimmed to prevent gouging or deep cuts.

In operation the blade 4 is positioned on the head i in the described manner, and the clamp 8 is caused to bear against the said blade by turning the nut 9. The knife is then held by the handle i3 and the blade is drawn toward the user and across the surface of the corn being trimmed. By reason of the fully protected corners of the blade 4, the partially exposed cutting edge of the said blade, and the angular disposition of the handle IS with respect to the head I, the corn may be conveniently and firmly trimmed without danger of cutting adjacent skin tissue.

The described form of the invention is not restrictive, but may be made in many ways within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed is:

A holder for a double-edged safety razor blade having a longitudinal slot in its center, said holder comprising: a substantially rectangular head having a convex outer surface, guards perpendicularly projecting from the ends of said head and adapted to receive said razor blade therebetween, inwardly formed edges along the sides of said head and inwardly of said projections, a longitudinal rib projecting from the center of the inner surface of said head and adapted to engage the slot of said blade, a handle projecting from the center of one end of said head, a rectangular blade clamp narrower at its center than said blade, and means securing said clamp to the said head with said blade positioned therebetween.
