O. EWING.
HOG TENDON CUTTER. I No. 253.359. Patented Feb. 7,1882.
N. FETHIS Pholmmhognphur. Wuhi C.
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ORVILLE EWING, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS. I
HOG-TENQON CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,359, dated February 7, 1882,
i Q Application filed December 24, 1881. (No model.)
. 0 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LORVILLE EWING, a resident of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Instruments for Cutting Tendons in Hogs and other Animals,of which the following'is a specification, having reference to the accompanying drawings;
My invention relates to an improved instrument principally designed for cutting the tendons of the adductor muscles of the snout in hogs to prevent rooting, the object being to make an incision exposing the tendon, to pick up the tendon, and to cut a pieceout of it at one operation and with one tool.
My invention consists in .the combination and adaptation of the various parts with and to each other, as hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.v
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan.
Like letters refer to like parts in both figures.
a is a bar of iron or steel, having a loop, I),
formed-at one end, and having secured to the other'end a lance-shaped knife, 0.
I is set at an acute angle with the bar a, as
shown, and its rear portion projectsupward andbackward. The knife has cutting-edges on each of the sides of its triangular or lanceshaped point, and also a cutting-edge'at its Said knife ing inclined to the bar a at the same angle as the knife 0, so that as the bar cl is slid forward the knivesii out against the back of knife 0, The bar d is moved forward and back ward by the toggle-joint formed by the link I and leverf, which is pivoted to the bar a, as
shown.
The operation ofmy instrument is as follows: The instrument is held in the right hand, the thumb resting against the curved projection 19, and the little finger and one next it entering the loop b., The point of knife 0 is now inserted in the hogs snout, under the adductor tendon, on one side from above, passing downward and outward the tendon is raised,an d as the knife is pushed farther forward drops behind the rear end of the knife. ger is now inserted in the loop 8, and, being eontracted, thesliding bard, carryingthe knives i i, is forced forward against thetendon and back ofknife 0, thus cutting a piece out of the tendon.
ator now clears the instrument from the shout, the sharpened rear edge of the knife 0 cutting its Way out.
I claim as my invention- The instrument for cutting tendons, consisting of bar a, knife 0, knives i i, sliding bar (1,
and means for forcing said sliding oar forward,
all combined substantially as shown, andfor the purpose set forth. 1
