the pressure exerting device which is adjusted to operate at the moment when the roller bearings have been raised to a distance equivalent to the thickness of the leather treated, is still inactive. It is not until the end phase of the movement of the working roll onto the leather has been reached, i. e. after the roll bearings have been brought in contact with the thrust plates of the toggle levers, that the previously adjusted pressure begins to act upon the bearings and thus upon the working roll and the leather to be smoothed. The reverse operation takes place when the roll slips down the leather under treatment. In this stage the rolling pressure of the pressure exerting device acts only during the period when the roll is travelling over the leather. As soon as the working roll begins to slip off the leather, the bearings of the roll move beyond the extreme point of the operating range of the pressure exerting device which thereby ceases to act upon the roll bearings and thus upon the roll itself, so that the latter slips down, under the efiect of its own weight only, from the leather onto the plate of the working table.
By means of this apparatus, which is very simple in its principle and in design, perfectly sound borders are obtained on rolled raw leather without the aid of edge supporting pieces to be inserted beneath the moving roll.
An example of carrying out the invention will be described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the pressure generating device in combination with a separate working roll; and
Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the pressure generating device and the associated separate roll on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
A carriage 3 movable to and fro is supported on an upper beam I by means of rollers 2. Reciprocating movement is imparted to the carriage 3 by means of a screw spindle 4. The pressure generating device comprises toggle levers 5, thrust plates 6 and sleeves I in which compression springs 8 are mounted. The springs 8 are adjusted to the required pressure by means of a regulating screw 9 and nuts [0. The regulating screw 9 is controlled from a hand wheel I I, Fig. 1, by means of a double chain transmission 2|. The pressure generating device as a whole is hung by means of screws [2, Fig. 2, from the carriage 3. The screws I2 are interconnected by means of a chain l3, and by a hand wheel M, Fig. 1, the pressure device may be raised or lowered as a unit through the intermediary of a double chain transmission 22 according to requirements. The working roll IS with its bearings 16 rests always under its own weight on the working plate of the table II, the said working plate being carried by a lower beam [8. Since the working roll is formed separately from the pressure generating device, clearances [9 may be left between the lower thrust plates 6 and the bearings [6 of the roll, and the size of these clearances may be increased or decreased as required by turning the handwheel [4. The arrangement of the supporting rollers 20 is broadly known and is not comprised within the scope of the present invention. By forming the working roll [5 with its bearings l6 separately from the pressure exerting device and thus separately from the carriage 3, the carriage and the rollers 2 are substantially re lieved.
What I claim is:
1. In a bridge rolling machine including a carriage, a pressure exerting device mounted on the carriage comprising spring biased toggle levers and vertically movable thrust plates actuated by said toggle levers, and a vertically movable working roll having bearings engaged by said thrust plates, the arrangement of the bearings of the working roll so as to be completely separate from the pressure exerting device of the machine and to be freely movable up and down along a path and in a space confined by the walls of the carriage frame and by the thrust plates of the toggle levers of the pressure exerting device, the latter being mounted as an adjustable unit in the carriage frame in such a way that the clearances between the bearings of the working roll and the thrust plates of the toggle levers of the pressure exerting device are variable as required, within the limits of a free movement, not loaded by the said pressure exerting device, of the working roll.
2. In a bridge rolling machine including a carriage, a pressure exerting device mounted on the carriage comprising spring biased toggle levers and vertically movable thrust plates actuated by said toggle levers, and a vertically movable working roll having bearings engaged by said thrust plates, the arrangement of the bearings of the working roll so as to be completely separate from the pressure exerting device of the machine and to be freely movable up and down along a path and in a space confined by the walls of the carriage frame and by the thrust plates of the toggle levers of the pressure exerting device, the preliminary tension of the pressure exerting device being adjustable by independent adjusting means adapted to operate independently of the adjustment of the clearance between the bearings of the working roll and the thrust plates of the toggle levers of the pressure exerting device.
3. In a bridge rolling machine including a carriage, a pressure exerting device mounted on the carriage comprising spring biased toggle levers and vertically movable thrust plates actuated by said toggle levers, and a vertically movable working roll having bearings engaged by said thrust plates, the arrangement of the bearings of the working roll so as to be completely separate from the pressure exerting device of the machine and to be freely movable up and down along a path and in a space confined by the walls of the carriage frame and by the thrust plates of the toggle levers of the pressure exerting device, the latter being mounted as an adjustable unit in the carriage frame in such a way that the clearances between the bearings of the working roll and the thrust plates of the toggle levers of the pressure exerting device are variable as required, within the limits of a free movement, not loaded by the said pressure exerting device, of the working roll,
the preliminary tension of the pressure exerting device being adjustable by means of an inde pendent adjusting member adapted to operate 1 independently of the adjustment of the said clearances.
