Description
eri'rnn'i' oiiiiiioiii,
TEACHINE FOR FRINTING THE ADDRESS ON NEWSPAPERS, SLC.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,319, dated September 6, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, R. W DAVIS and Dixiici, Davis, ol Yellow Springs, in the county of Greene and State of hio, have invented a new `and useful liiiprovenient in illaehiiies Jor Printing' lhe Address on Newspapers. &e.; and we do herehy deelare that` the following is a full and el air description thereof. reference heinehad lo the aeeoinpanying drawings, and lo the letters of reference iiiarked thereon and inade to forni a part ol' this description.
Our invention relates, lst, to the eniploynient ol' wooden bloelt's. having indentaled letters. in their l'aees, for printingI the address on newspapers; Zd, to the arrangeiiieiit of .said bloeks upon a flexible bell oi' hand; 3d, lo a dei'iee tor separating' said blocks al the printing' point in sueh niaiiner that each block may deliver its impression Without interference frein, or by other blocks: 4th. a deviee l'or properly adjusting' the feed wheel willi reference to the hed.
`n referenee to the aeeoinpanying drawings` Figure l, is a perspective View. showing the printing' inaeliine arranged or use. Fig. 2, is a Vvertieal sectional View, showing the niaiiner in whieli the iiiaehine inay he operated, y
is a base, or platl'oini for the niaehiiie, and iiiortised into the hase (A) is an upright post (ll). A\tlai'hed tothe post (l) aiid extending theretroni sullieiently to he convenient t'or the feeding' of papers a table ((1) having Jf`orinedl in it an opening', for the follower (d) l'ully shown in llig. E2. rl'he follower (Il). is liornied willi a ret-ess (1') within whieli is arranged a spiral springl inserted into the post, (l), anilnexlending lherelroni into the i'eeess (e) is a plate (y). against whieh the uppei' lend ol the spring;h (f) is iliade to hear. while, the lower end ol' the spring' is niade lo rest upon the follower. as l'ull shown in Fie'. .5 by ineans oll wliieli tlie said follower is niade to return` alter having heen l'oi'eed, up against, the l'aee olE the hlm-ks.
(/i) is a -.roil, pii'oted to the, ti'eaille at ('I) and inserted into a. niortise in the follower (fl).
(1') is a t `aille, pivoted lo the post of thel hase atr (jf) by iiieans ol whieh lhe follower (d) is iliade to operate through the inediuin ol i'od (/i).
li`irinlj,v seeured to the post. (l) is a projeetion, (lf), to whieh is attached the pointi- -inli'ed h).
ed bed (I). Said bed is inade ot.' a triangular torni. haring a li'ase, barely sutheient to t'orni a hed. oi' hearing' tor one ol' lhe-wooden blocks,
(n) is 1i t'rietion lever, pivoted to the top ol the post (l) at' (l'). upon whieh is arranged the. leed wheel (/;)the lever (li) is niade to lil elosely. in its hearings in the postl (l) so that its l'i'ietion therein nia\v he sullieient lo sustain the wheel (y) inhan\v reqiiii'ed position.
(r) a're wooden hloeks niade in the proper forni and .sii/,e so asA lo he adapted. to the address required: in the laee nl these blocks (r) are l'oi'iued indentated letters; arranged in sui-li inanner as vto print any address i'equired. 'the liloels (r) are arranged in elose eoluinnsl upon a hand'oi' belt` (s). and are. seeui'ed to said hell. by nieans olE sinall laelt nails, so lhat they iiiay he readily arranged upon, oi' renimied lroin lhe hell. liy this arrangement ot the hloeks (r), upon the hell (s) we ai'e enabled lo plaee, theni iii elose. i-oiupaet eolunins, and thereby secure a large nunilier of naines or addresses upon one hell.
llai'iiigi' deserihed the eonstruetion ol our `invention; we will proeeed to deseribe its operation.
'l`lie hloel (1') being' tirsti prepared, with ,the proper indenlated letters in their t'aees, and then taelt'ed onto the hell as hetore deserihed. the lares ol the bloeks will be ineans ot a suitable hand ink roller; the hellV (s) with its hloelt's will then be plaeed upon the lieed wheel (7)), passing around the poiited hed the end (/i) ot' the. lever (in) will then be depressed. so as lo tighten the belt (s) upon the leed wheel and hed; the operator` will now lalt'e. hohl oll ,the l'eed wheel with his lelt hand` and niove il together with the hand (.v) iiutil one otl the blot-lts is in proper position upon 'the lied (l) to de.- lii'ei' its impression, as eleai'l'y shown in Fie'. L), rl`he operator will then plaee lhe newspaper upon the table, (C) in proper p0- sition to reeeive the impression. an( depress the lreadle (1') willi his fool'. by iiieans of whit-h the lollower (Il) will be forced lipward, through the inediinn of rod in sueh inanner as to bring' the papei' in eontaet with the liloelc. A gentle pressure of the l'oot upon the ti'eadle is thenrsutlieient. to perfect the opei'atioii ol printing. 'llie impression being iiiade upon the paper, the
treadle. is lreleased, and the follower forced haelt b means of the spring The feed wheel will be again turned, another block brought' in position for printing, and another paper fed to the machine and printed as betore described, and this 'oper-l ation may continue until each bleek, has delivered its impression, when, the belt first used may be removed and replaced by another similar one. The bed (l) being pointed at its lower end, serves to separate the blocks (1') at the printing point so that books, we do not design to use nor do we claim either of these devices. ButJ that we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The arrangement of wooden blocks (E) of suitable size for a single address with indented letters in their 'faces and attached by means of small tacks or equivalent, to a flexible band or belt, in close compact columns and operated substantially as described.
9. The use of the triangular stationary7 bed piece (l) over which the, belt. slides by means ot' belt pulley (7)) and regulated and adjusted by means ot lever (fn) substantially in the manner and vfor the purpose set7 forth.
