OLIVER S. PRESBREY, OF PORT HENRY, NEW YORK.
MINING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,097, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed April 12,1881. (No model.) A
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER S. PRESBREY, of Port Henry, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Mining Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is a portable mining apparatus, constructed as fully described hereinafter, so as to secure a more economical and effective disposition of the parts of the mechanism, and a cheap, light, and effective apparatus for use where the ordinary heavy stationary machinery could not be employed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved apparatus, and Fig.2is a plan view.
The entire apparatus is mounted upon a rigid frame or bed, A, supporting standards or brackets,in which turn the driving-shaft B and drumshaft 0, carrying a winding-drum, D,a pinion, a, on the driving-shaft gearing with a toothed wheel, I), on the drum-shaft. At each end of the shaft B is a heavy disk or crank wheel, E, to the wrist-pin of which is connected the pitman 01, attached to the piston-rod e of an engine, F, the latter being supplied with steam, either from a boiler, G, mounted on thebed A, or from a stationary boiler at any suitable point. Each piston-rod eextends through the rear head of the cylinder and constitutes the piston-rod of a blowing-cylinder, H, provided with. inlet and outlet Valves arranged to ad mit and let out the air, which is conducted to pipesf, and thence to the mine-shaft or other place to be ventilated, or for the purpose of driving rock-drills, pumps, &c. The shaft B serves to connect the two engines and blowing apparatus, which are so arranged as to about alternate the strokes of the blowing-pistons, securing a continuous uniform blast and preventing both cranks from being on the center at the same time.
By the arrangement described the proper alignment of the two setsof engines and blowing-cylinders, and their position in respect to the driving-shaft, is preserved, thereby avoiding the friction and loss of power which results in ordinary engines from the imperfect relative setting of the parts, as is apt to be the case where the position of the apparatus is frequently changed, especially in mining districts, where it is difficult to procure efficient helpand appliance. One of the chief advantages of the construction, however, results from the combination of the duplicate compressing or blowing appliances with the engine-shaft B and bed-plate A,as set forth, the
strain on all the parts being so equalized as to insure a uniformity and regularity of motion, both in hoisting and compressing, which could not otherwise be easily attained, while the compressors, forming part of and being carried with the hoisting apparatus, are always in position for immediate use, without the delays and expense attending constant detachment andresetting, as in ordinary apparatus.
One engine instead of two may be used, and in some instances the driving-shaft may constitute the drum-shaft.
1 claim- In a portable mining apparatus, the combination of a boiler, engines, drum, and compressors, said engine arranged tooperate the driving and drum shafts and compressors, the whole in relative position on the bed-plate A, as set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLIVER STETSON PRESBREY.
