Nov. 7, 1950 J. G. NILSSON APPARATUS FOR DELIVERING MEASURED QUANTITIES OF MATERIAL Filed April 26, 1946 is rotatably journalled a pump cylinder 2.
Patented Nov. 7, 1950 I, I Gunnar Nilsson, Appelvikcn, Sweden, assignor to Arenco' -Aktiebolag, Stockholm, Sweden, a Swedish jdi nt-stoc k company Application April 26, 1946, Serial No. 665,169 ;;.=7 '..In Sweden April 28, 1945 3 Claims.
This invention relates to apparatus for deliver- 7 ing measured quantities of more or less viscous or semi-liquid material. More particularly the in vention relates to apparatus of such kind having a delivery channel and having a valve provided with a passage adapted to periodically constitute a downwardly directed outlet end. of said'delivery channel. Apparatus of this kindrare well adapted for the delivery of certainmaterials, but they are afiected with certain drawbacks when adapted to deliver certain other materials such as jellies, preserves, etc. which are sluggish in flow and have a tendency to adhere to the wall of the housing of said valve and form strings suspended from said housing. It is an object of the invention to remove said drawbacks.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of an apparatus embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line IIII of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a view from below of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, a vertical pipe I is formed integral with a pump housing I6 in which A piston 3 adapted to reciprocate in the cylinder 2 is pivotally connected to a connecting rod 4. The connecting rod 4 is also pivoted to a doublearmed lever 5' which is secured to a rotatably journalled shaft 6. The free end of the lever carries a roller 32 which is pressed by a spring 33 against a cam disc I secured to a rotary driving shaft 8.
The cylinder 2 is formed integrally with a toothed flange I! which meshes with a toothed rack I8 which constitutes the end of a rod 38. The lower, forked end 39 of the rod 38 carries a roller I9 which rides on a cam disc 20 secured to the shaft 8. The cylinder 2 has an inlet opening 22 and an outlet opening 23 for material.
The lower end of the pipe I is formed integral with a substantially cylindrical valve housing 9 the bottom portion of which is cut out to form a slot 34 having sharp scraper edges Illa. and lb from which the surfaces 35 extend obliquely upwardly. The valve housing 9 is provided with a cylindrical bore in which is located a cylindrical plug I I which is rotatable in said bore. The valve plug II has a passage I2 extending transversely therethrough. As shown in Fig. 3 the scraper edges Illa. and IUb of the valve housing coincide substantially with the side edges 25 of the mouth I3 of the passage I2 when the valve is open. At
the opposite. rounded-side of the passage-I2 the plug II is equipped with drip edges 2|. Oneend of the plug I I is formed integrally' 'with ajtoothed segment I4, which mesheswith a toothed rack I5. The toothed rack I5 is adapted to reciprocate'lon gitudinally in a guide 30 and carries afroller 24 which by means of a contractile spring 3I is pressedagainst a cam 26 secured to'the shaft't.
The cams I, 20 and 26 are shap'ed'and secured to the shafts 6 and 8 so as'to impart to the piston-3; the cy1inder 2.and the valve II timed movements in a manner as hereinafter described. I z I Jars 21 or other receptacles to" be filled are by means of a conveyor 28 advanced stepwise laterally into a position below the valve II whereby the cylinder 2 has such an angular position within the housing It that its outlet opening 23 is shut and its inlet opening 22 registers with a supply channel 29 for filling material whilst the piston 3 is retracted to the right (Fig. 1), sucking a measured quantity of filling material into the cylinder 2. Thereafter, the valve is opened and the cylinder 2 is turned into the position as shown in Fig. 1 so that its inlet opening 22 is shut and its outlet opening 23 will register with the pipe I. Thereafter or simultaneously, the piston 3 moves to the left (Fig. l) and forces a measured quantity of filling material out of the opening 23 and through the pipe I and the valve passage I2 further into the jar 21. Thereafter, the valve is shut by turning the plug II through one quarter of a revolution. Thereby, filling material adhering to the outlet opening or mouth I3 of the valve passage I2, will, in dependence on the direction of rotation of valve plug ll be cut or scraped off at the edge Illa or Illb and drop into the jar 21. Thus, if the plug II is turned in the direction as shown by the arrow in Fig. 1 adhering filling material will be cut off at the edge Illa. Filling material possibly still adhering to the cylindrical surface of the valve II will be cut off at the edge I02) when the plug is opened again. Filling material possibly accumulating on the surfaces 35 will flow downwardly back to the scraper edges Ina and lb, and after opening the valve it will be torn oil said edges by the filling material thereafter being ejected through the plug II and contacting with said accumulated material.
Iclaim:
1. In an apparatus for delivering measured quantities of material, a delivery channel, means for periodically forcing the material down through said channel, a valve having a plug provided with a passage adapted to periodically constitute a downwardly directed free outlet end of said delivery channel, said valve having a housing for said plug provided with an opening having an obliquely downwardly directed cutting edge engaging said plug and being, adapted to: sub:- stantially coincide with one edge or said outlet end when said plug is in open position and also.
for periodically opening and closing said valve past said cutting edge.
2. In an apparatus for delivering; measured quantities of material, a delivery channel, means for periodically forcing the materialdown through said channel, a valve having a plug provided with a passage adapted to periodically constitute a downwardly directed free outlet end of said deliver-y channel, said valve having a housing for said plug provided with an opening having a pair of downwardly directed? cutting: edges engaging and extending longitudinally-of said'plug, said outlet end of said passage having a pair of opforming a bottom edge of an obliquely upwardly" P y disposed cutting edges adap ed t0 Subextending surface of said housing. and. meansstantially; coincide-with said cutting edges of said opening when said plug is in open position and being interconnected by curved cutting edges,
and meansfor periodically opening and closing saidyalve plugby rotating said plug to move said oppositely disposed cutting edges and said .curved cutting; edges past one of said cutting said channel, a valve having a plug provided with a passage adapted to periodically constitute a downwardly directed: free outlet end of said delivery. channel. andhaving. a. cutting edge, said valve. having ahousing for. said plug, provided with. an. opening, having. a surface extending edges-of said housing.
