1 Claim.
-;.;-This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in stiplpling rollers, more specifically, rollers used for the application of paint or for impressing design on painted surfaces, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate the cleaning of such rollers after use, that is, to prevent the paint from hardening on the roller and thereby rendering the roller poorly effective or unfit for further use.
This object is achieved by the provision of a stippling roller which includes in its construction an expandible and contractible shell provided with a removable fabric cover or jacket, matters being so arranged that the jacket may be quickly and conveniently removed from the shell for purposes of cleaning or replacement.
An important feature of the invention, therefore, resides in the provision of a stippling roller wherein the fabric jacket may be quickly and easily applied or removed.
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a stippling roller which is simple in construction, which will not easily become damaged, and which .will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figur iii Figure 4 is a perspective view of a bearing bracket used in the invention; and
Figure 5 is a developed plan view of the tubu- I lar shell used in the invention, together with a pair of bearing brackets in situ thereon.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a stippling roller designated generally by the reference character 10, the same embodying in its construction a sheet of material l2, preferably assuming the form of a parallelogram as shown in Figure 5, this sheet being rolled or arcuated into a tubular configuration so as to provide what may be 2 .i referred to as an expansible and shell l4.
It will be noted that this shell is open-ended, and if desired the end portions thereof may be flared outwardly to form annular seams It for the retention of a tubular jacket l8 on the shell, which jacket will be hereinafter more fully described.
It is also to be noted that the arcuation or rolling of the sheet of material [2 provides a longitudinally extending, open-ended slot 2!] in the shell, whereby the shell may be contracted or compressed so as to facilitate the application or removal of the jacket [8. However, it should be understood that the shell possesses suiilcient inherent resiliency so that it normally expands itself against the jacket, whereby the latter is firmly retained thereon.
The aforementioned jacket I8 is of a tubular Cantatas Configuration and is formed of suitable fabric ma- 1 terial, being of course intended to perform the actual stippling operation.
For convenience of manipulation the shell I4 is rotatably mounted upon a suitable handle 22, this preferably being configurated substantially as shown and including an end portion 24 which extends into the shell I4, while the remaining end portion of the handle is equipped with a suitable hand grip 26.
A pair of angulated bearing brackets 28 are secured by welding, or the like, to the inner surface at the diametrically opposite sides and adjacent the relatively opposite ends of the shell I4, and the end portion 24 of the handle 22.is rotatably journalled in these brackets, as will be clearly apparent.
The handle portion 24 is prevented from shifting longitudinally in the brackets 28 by means of a suitable collar '30 secured medially the length of the handle portion 24, while a retaining screw 32, equipped with a washer 34, is provided at the end of the handle portion, the washer 34 and the collar 30 engaging the brackets 28, substantially as shown.
By virtue of this arrangement the shell [4 together with the jacket I8 is freely rotatable on the handle and the roller may be manipulated tion of the bearing brackets 28 within the shell l4, these being so arranged as to provide bearings for the handle portion I 4 without interfering with the expanding and contracting movement of the shell, since they are diametrically opposed and circumferentially offset with respect to the slot 20. It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemedunnecessary. While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and, scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a stippling roller, the combination of a single sheet of resilient material constituting a substantially cylindrical and diametrically expansible and contractible shell, adjacent edges of said sheet extending obliquely from one end of the shell to a diametrically opposite point at the remaining end of thelatter, a tubular jacket removably positioned and frictionally retained on said shell, a handle having a shaft portion extending longitudinally in the shell, and a pair of bearing brackets secured at diametrically opposite points to opposite end portions of said shell, said brackets being diametrically opposed to said adjacent edges of said sheet in the respective end portions of said shell, and the shaft portion of said handle being rotatably journaled in said brackets independently of the expansion and contraction of the shell.
