B. S. STIMPSOII.
THREAD GUARD FOR SPINNING MACHINES. No. 252,814. Patented Jan. 24,1882.
w @mtv ,QMWMQ STATES EDYVARD S. STIMPSON, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE DRAPER & SONS, OF SAME PLACE.
TH READ-GUARD FOR SPINNING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,814, dated January-24, 1882.
Application filed August 25, 1881.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. STIMPSON, of Hopedale, Worcester county, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Thread Guards for Spinning Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to threadguards to be placed between the adjacent rings ofringspinning machines to prevent the yarn being spun and wound upon adjacent bobbins from striking together and being broken.
My improved guard is composed of a plate of metal having a foot extended laterally or at right angles therefrom, and provided with a hole to receive a screw, which is inserted loosely through the said foot into a threaded hole in a block or slide of substantially the same size as the foot, the said foot and slide having between them proper spaces and being of proper shape to embrace and be clamped to two parallel rods extended along the frame longitudinally from end to end, so that the series of guards thereon may be readily and easily adjusted horizontally upon the said rods and be quickly clamped in any desired position by the manipulation of the screws in the feet of the guards. The employment of the two rods to receive the feet and blocks of the guards obviates making screw-holes or screwseats, as is common when a single rod is employed.
Figure 1 represents in front elevation a sufficient portion of aring-spinning frame to illustrate my invention; Fig. 2, a section thereof on the dotted line no 00 of Fig. 1, looking toward the left; Fig. 3, a section on the dotted line y y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 an enlarged view of one of the blocks at the end of the series of guards to show its pin.
The bar a, a fixed part of any usual ringspinning frame-preferably a part of the roller-bea1n-has connected with it at each end a suitable hanger, b, providedat its lower end with a hole to receive a pin,vc, of the block (I, which co-operates with the foot e of the endmost guard, 0 of the series of guards, four only being shown. The foot of each guard receives loosely a screw, f, which is inserted into a threaded part of the block 61, which co-oper- (No model.)
ates with the foot, the foot and block being placed at opposite sides of two parallel rods, 9 it, so that turning the said screw in will clamp the said foot and block upon the said rods in any desired position and hold them there with the guard e in the proper position with relation to the rings k in the rails m and the spindles l and bobbins a, the upper ends only of which are shown in Fig. 1. Each hanger b will have a finger, N, to serve as a rest or support (see Fig. 2) for the lowermost rod, h, thus keeping the guards extended horizontally, or nearly so, forward between the rings and spindles.
I do not broadly claim a thread guard, as I am aware of United States Patent No.202,420, wherein a single rod is used to support the guard, a screw impinging against said iod to hold each guard in place laterally and horizontally.
By employing two parallel rods or bars upon which the feet of the guards can take seat, as shown, the said'feet are made instrumental in preventing the guards turning vertically with relation to their support.
I claim- 1. The hangers adapted to be secured to the frame of the machine, and the two parallel rods or bars g h, combined with a series of guards having feet, and with blocks and screws to clamp and hold I118 said feet in adjusted position on the said rods or bars, substantially as described.
2. The guard e and its laterally-projectiug foot 0, provided with a hole, and the block (I, provided with a threaded hole, and the two rods 9 h, placed between them, combined with the screwf, inserted loosely through the feet and screwed into the block, subst ntially as described.
3. The hanger I), provided with the finger 0 combined with the rods 1 h, block 61, and its pin 0, and with the guard and its foot and screw, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD S. STIMPSON.
