This invention relates to turkey callers.
An object of this invention is to provide a device `which will imitate the call of turkeys. In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, the device is formed out of a hollow body having a spring-pressed plunger therein, with a reed forwardly of the plunger, and a sound chamber projecting from the reed. It is contemplated that the device be made out of metal, although it may be made partly of metal and partly of other material, such as wood, plastic or the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide a caller of this kind which is formed of durable material which will not be affected by weather conditions and which includes a reed which can easily be replaced at small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral III designates generally a tubular body which is formed of an inner cylindrical member II having a cap I2 threaded thereonto. The cap I2 is formed 'with openings I3 laterally of the center thereof, and a piston or plunger I4 is slidable in the cylinder II.
A piston rod or stem I5 extends from the piston or plunger I4 and is slidable through an opening I6 formed in the cap I'2. A ring-shaped handle I'I is secured to the outer end of the stem or rod I5 and provides a means whereby the piston I or plunger I4 may be manually reciprocated. A spring I8 is disposed in the cylinder II engaging at its forward end against the piston or plunger I4 and engaging at its rear end against the cap or head I2.
A cylindrical or tubular member I9 which forms a sound chamber is threaded onto the cylinder I'I and extends forwardly from the cylinder II, and the cylindrical member I9 has formed on the outer end thereof an inwardly projecting annular flange 2I dening an opening 22. A reed carrier generally designated as 23 is interposed between the cylinder II and the sound chamber 2IIv and includes a disc-shaped plate 24 provided with a marginal flange 25 adapted to be secured between the inner end of the tubular member I9 and the cylinder II.
The dise 24 is Aprovided in one side of the center thereof with an elongated opening 26 which is normally covered by a resilient reed member 2l. The reed member 21 is preferably constructed of thin rubber or the like and is secured to the disc member 24 by means of a split locking ring 28 which engages in an annular groove 29 formed in the outer edge of the disc 24. The disc member 24 is also provided with a second valved opening 30 which is adapted to be closed upon forward movement of the plunger I4, by means of a valve plate 3|'. The valve plate 3l is loosely mounted in an enlarged counterbore 32 formed axially of the opening 30 and a split triangular locking member 33 holds the valve member 3| loosely in the counterbore 32. The cylinder II is provided between the ends thereof with openings 34 out of which air is adapted to escape during the initial forward movement of plunger I4.
In the use and operation of this device, the housing I0 is preferably formed out of metal and is formed of disconnectable parts II and I9, together with head I2. When plunger I4 is moved rearwardly, valve member 3|' will be drawn to a released or open position permitting air to enter the cylinder II on the forward side of plunger I4.
When plunger I4 is released or forcibly pushed forwardly, the air in cylinder I I between plunger I4 and disc 24 will be forced out through opening 26 so vas to thereby vibrate reed 2l. The length and diameter of the sound chamber 2D is such as to provide for producing a sound simulating a turkey.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact detailsof construction herein disclosed, but claim lall variations falling within the purview of the member will be forced out of the latter by said plunger during a portion of the forward movement of said plunger, said carrier having a pair of openings therethrough, an inwardly opening check valve in one of said pair of openings, a resilient reed covering the other of said openings on the forward side of said carrier, and a forward end lwall carried by the other of said members and formed with a relatively large central opening, initial `forward movement of said plunger forcing a portion of the air in said one member through said rst named opening and also additional air past said reed to thereby initially vibrate said reed relatively slowly, move-f ment of said plunger forwardly .past said first named opening eiecting rapid vibration of said reed.
