GEORGE H. BAOKMIRE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO HENRY R. SHOOH, OF SAME PLACE.
VEG ETABLE-C UTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,713, dated January 24, 1882.
Application filed Novcmber28, 1881. (No model.) Y
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BAGKMIRE, a cit zen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain Improvements in Vegetable-Gutters, 850.,
of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to construct a machine for rapidly and effectively slicing vegetables, 850., a fuither object being to adapt to the machine for removing grains or kernels of corn from the cob.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the machine; Fig. 2, a front view; and Fig. 3, a rear wiew, partly in section.
A is the base of the machine, at the rear of which is a post or standard, 13, carrying a hearing, a, for the shaft D, the latter having arms I) connected to a ring, d, which is secured to or forms part of the disk or face-plate E of the machine. This face-plate has a number of radial slots, 0, for the reception of the cuttingknives F, of which three are shown in the present instance, these knives being secured to a spindle, f, of square or other angular crosssection, adapted to a recess, "w, of corresponding shape in the frontend of the shaft D, "so that the spindle can have no rotary movement independent of the shaft D, the knives being 0 thus maintained properly in line with the slots 6. Longitudinal movement of the spindlefin respect to the shaft B is permitted, however, in order that the cutting-edges of the knives may be caused to project more or less beyond 5 the face of the plate E, in accordance with the fineness of the cut desired. This adjustment is effected by thrusting the spindle intoor withdrawing it from the recess in the shaft D to the desired extent, the spindle being secured 40 in position after adjustment by tightening a thumb-screw, h, which is adapted to an openingin the spindlef and passes through a slot, m, in the shaft D; or a-bolt projecting from the spindle and having a nut may be substituted 5 for the thumb-screw h. A spring, a, interposed between the end of the spindlefand the base of the recess "20 in the shaft, tends to project the knife-plate and spindle when the thumbscrew h is loosened.
0 In front of the face-plate E of the machine is a table, G, which supports the material to be. out, the same being pressed against the face-plateby one hand, while the other hand plate, H, having its outer edge, by preference, notched or serrated, this blade serving as it is rotated to remove the kernels or grains from an ear of corn adapted to an opening, y, in a segmental guard, J, secured to the base A. (See dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 3.) The guard J is preferably hinged to the base at one side and secured at the other by a suitable catch, on releasing which the guard can be turned on its hinge, so as to expose the blade H and shaft D and permit ready access to these and adjacent parts of the machine.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in amachine for slicing vegetables, &c., of a slotted face-plate, means for rotating the same, and knives f, adapted to the slots and secured to a spindle of square or other angular cross-section, adapted to a recess of corresponding shape in the shaft of the lace-plate, as set forth.
2. The combination of the slotted face-plate and its shaft D, having a recess, 10, and slot 111, with'the knives F, the knife-spindlef, and the thumb-screw h, as set forth.
3. The combination of the slotted face-plate E, the shaft D, having a recess, w, and slot 112, the knives F and their spindlef, the thumbscrew it, and the spring a, as set forth.
4. The combination of the segmental guard 0 J, having an opening, 1, with the shaft D, having a radial blade, H, as set forth.
5. The combination of the base A, the faceplate E, the shaft D, having a blade, H, and the segmental guard J, having an opening, y, 5 and hinged to the base, as described, whereby it can be thrown luck in order to expose the shaft and the parts carried thereby, as set forth.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name too to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' G. H. BAOKMIRE.
