NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,647, dated January 24:, 1882.
Application filed November 9, 1881.
provements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby v declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a' part of this specification, and to the letters and fignres of reference marked thereon.
Figurel of-the drawings is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with the slidingguard-plateremoved. and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the screw-bolt with screw-nut and its connections in section.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in that class of nut-locks in which a spring connected to the screw-nut is made to engage with a vertical groove in the screw-bolt to prevent the nut from being unscrewed.
The invention consists in the details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
In the accompanyingdrawings, A represents the screw-bolt of the ordinary construction, and B the nut, havingthe usual serew-threaded The nut B upon its upper surface has a depression or countersi1'1k,a, within which is located aspringpawl, b. This pawl is.bentso as to partially encircle a stationary pin, 0, one end of said pawl bearing against a shoulder, d, while the opposite end thereof engages with a suitably formed groove, 0, in the screw-bolt. The nut B is formed with a dovetailed recess,f,in which fitsacorrespondingly-formed dovetailed guardplate, 0. The recessfis slightly tapering, as is also the plate 0, so that the latter can be (No model.)
placed imposition at one end of the recess only, and when in place the openingin said plate will register with the opening in the nut B for the passage of the screw-threaded bolt A.
The grooves in the bolt A may be of any suitable form or constructed in such manner as to present a shoulder against which the end of the spring-pawl b abuts, so that the bolt can turn-in onedirection and be prevented from so doing in a reverse direction by the end of the pawl engaging with the shoulder on the principle of the ordinary pawl and ratchet.
The spring-pawl I), in its construction, may be variously modified so long as its office is performed as above stated.
The guard-plateGbeingin position asshown in Fig. 1, the upper surface thereofis flush with the upper surface of the nut; and said plate has an opening, g, to admit the insertion of a suitable key to press back the end of the springpa-wl from contact with the shoulder. of the groove 0, so that the nut can be unserewt d.
Having now fully described my inventien,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the screwbolt A, having a suitable shoulder or groove, 0, of the screw-nut 13, having connected thereto a suitable spring-pawl, b, said nut having a dovetailed recess,f, for the reception of the dovetailed guard-plate G, having opening g for the.
insertion of a key, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. CLICK. Witnesses Gno. STANWOOD, Lnwrs HAILS.
