Description

Sept. 12, 1950 c. DEYO 2,522,020

AUTOMATIC CHRISTMAS TREE FIRE EXTIN GUISHER Filed Dec. 3, 1947 A IN VENTOR. LEONA/9D C DE Y0 ATTEI RN EYS Patented Sept. 12, 1950 UNITED AUTOMATIC CHRISTMAS TREE FIRE EXTINGUISHER Leonard C. Deyo, Lewiston, Idaho Application December 3, 1947, Serial No. 789,535

1 Claim. 1

This invention relates to an automatic Christmas tree fire extinguisher.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a fire extinguisher particularly adapted to be fitted on a Christmas tree and wherein the part containing the extinguishing fluid is of ornamental design but fragile to be opened for spreading the fluid over the tree, the opening of the container being effected automatically when a predetermined temperature, resulting from a flame, has been effected.

Other objects of the present invention are to provide an automatic Christmas tree flre extinguisher which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efflcient in operation.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the fire extinguisher connected to the tree to locate the fluid container at the top thereof.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary and sectional view of the extinguisher taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the clamp of the support for attaching the support to the tree and as viewed on line -3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view f the extinguisher after the frangible container has; been broken to discharge the fluid.

Fgig. 5 is a fragmentary transverse sectional i wi taken through the support and the inner wall bf the container and showing the connection of; the container with the support, the View being taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.

Fi is a fragmentary front elevational view of the e\xtinguisher showing a different shaped containeii for the fluid.

Referring now to the figures, ID represents a support having spring clamps H thereon serving to attach the support to the tree. This support in is the form of a rod which is threaded at its upper end as indicated at 12. A knurled supporting inut I3 is adjustable upon the threaded end I 2. This nut will support a loop projection IKXGXtGIidillg from a frangible container 15. As the nut 13 is adjusted, the container will be elevated to a different height or level removed from a plate or disc l6 which serves to break the fluid container as shown in Fig. 4. This plate I6 is normally retained in a position to compress a spring H by solder material la. The spring I! is anchored to the rod by a rivet l9. As the plate It is released, it will 2 break the container l5. The soldering material is connected between the rod lb and the plate it in only such amount as to be easily separable therefrom when heat is conducted to the same as by way of the conduction of the heat along the rod ill which is of metal.

The fluid will drop onto the plate I6 and will be spread outwardly in all directions so as to be extended to all sides of the tree. Accordingly the plate l6 serves as a deflector for th fluid.

Also extending from. the rear of the container I5 is a loop projection 2| adapted to surround the upper end of the rod whereby to support the upper portions of the container and to maintain the same upright on the rod. A loci: nut 22 will prevent the container from being removed from the rod. As the container is elevated on the rod the nut 22 must be released.

In Fig. 6 there is shown a modified form of container as indicated at 23. This shows that the container can be made of any shape. This container is in the form of a cross whereas the container 15 is in the form of a star.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.

I claim:

In a fire extinguisher for trees, the combination which comprises a vertically disposed rod having a threaded upper end, a seal-ed fragile container having loops with openings therein carried by the upper threaded end of the rod with the loops positioned on the rod, locking nuts on the threaded end of the rod for securing the container through the loops thereof in position on the rod, a disc freely slidable on the rod and positioned to engage the container, a spring on the rod positioned to urge the disc toward the container, means anchoring one end of the spring to the rod, and a fusable element secured to the rod and positioned for retaining said disc in spaced relation to said container whereby upon fusing of the element the spring snaps the disc against the container for break; ing the container.
