This invention relates to childrens toys, and pertains more particularly to a combination toy bank and jack-in-the-box.

The principal purpose of the invention is to provide a unitary article having a compartment for a conventional jack-in-the-box, a bank compartment having a sliding drawer, and spring means actuated by the closing of the drawer to release the lid of the rst compartment, so that the jack pops up when the drawer containing a coin is closed.

A further object of the invention is to provide a bank drawer having a bottom recess for receiving a coin, and a hinged bottom member which holds the coin in the recess until the drawer is closed and then automatically swings downwardly into the bank compartment, so that the coin drops into the bank and cannot be readily removed.

A recommended embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the article with both compartments closed;

Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section, with the jack in elevation, showing the bank drawer opened to receive a coin; and

Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the drawer closed and the jack popped up, the spring being in the position which it occupies immediately after the drawer has been forcibly closed.

The novel toy comprises a rectangular box IU, provided at its forward end with a double bottomed cash drawer l2 having a knob I4 by which it may be slidably moved on a pair of runners It. The iixed bottom 18 forms a permanent part of the drawer and is provided with anI aperture or recess 20 for receiving a coin when the drawer is in its opened position (Fig, 2). A movable bottom or drop leaf 22 is suitably hinged at 2li to the forward end of the drawer and, when the drawer is in its opened position, serves as a support for the coin placed in the recess 20. When the drawer is in its closed position (Fig. 3), the drop leaf 22 swings downwardly between the runners i6, and the coin is dropped into the bank or coin-receiving compartment 2E. A stop pin 28 carried by the drop leaf prevents the drawer from being pulled completely out of the compartment, and preferably limits the opening of the drawer to the extent indicated in Fig. 2.

In the jack compartment 30, which is separated from the bank compartment 26 by a partition 32, the spring-actuated "jack 34 is mounted in the conventional manner. The lid 36, which normally depresses and conceals the figure 34, is attached to the end of box Il) by a pair of hinges 38. A curved leaf spring or latch 4U is mounted on the partition 32, and normally engages a loop catch 42 to hold the lid in a closed position, the

upper end of the spring latch having a hook 44 received in a notch 43 (Fig. 3) at the top of the partition 32, into which the catch 42 extends when the lid is closed.

The body portion of the latch 40 is located in the bank compartment 26, in the path of movement of the inner end 43 of the drawer I2. Hence, when the drawer is forcibly closed, the spring latch is moved to disengage the hook 44 from the lid catch 42. The spring-actuated "jack thereupon forces the lid open and pops into view. It should be noted that, when no pressure is exerted to close the drawer, the lid can be manually re-latched w-hile the drawer is fully shut, to close the jack in the box until the drawer is again opened for the deposit of a coin, and forcibly closed.

Although I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the structural details thereof, for other arrangements obviously fall within the intended scope of the appended claim.

I claim:

In a combined toy bank and jack-in-the-box having a casing, a partition dividing the casing into two compartments, a coin drawer slidably received by one compartment, a spring-actuated iigure emergably mounted in the other compartment, and a hinged lid for releasably enclosing the iigure within its compartment, latching means for yieldingly securing the lid in enclosing position, said means comprising a leaf spring mounted on one side of said partition, the partition having a notch in the top thereof and the spring having a hooked end received in said notch and movable therethrough toward the compartment containing said gure, the spring having a bowed body portion disposed in the path of movement of the inner end of said drawer, a catch on the free end of said lid, said catch being engageable with the hooked end of said latch to hold the lid shut, said catch being disengaged from said hooked end by the impact of the drawer end on said spring when the drawer is forcibly shut against said spring.
