This invention relates to heat-treatingapparatus.

In each of the modifications, It! is a housing of rectangular cross-section having vertical walls Hand l2 of which the wall H is provided with a relatively small horizontal opening l3. Two horizontal rails i4 'are'm'ounted within the housing with one set of ends engaging the wall l2 and extending through theopening-I3 a short distance beyond the wall 1 l. A cradle l5 is'slidably supported by the rails 14 and a feed screw I6 is provided'formovingthe cradle i5 along the rails 14. The cradle l5 rotatably supports a roll I! mounted thereon in such manner that at least one'end of the roll may easily and quickly be lifted out of supported relation to said cradle. A pair of ducts 18 are provided 'for projecting heatedv air into the housing and. a duct I9 is provided for withdrawing air from the-"ihousin'g.
The withdrawn air'may be heated and returned 21in which is journalled a 011 22., A feed screw 23 is provided for adjusting the cradle 2| on the; table toward or away from the housing Ill. The roll 22 is supported by the cradle 2! in such manner that at least one end of the roll may be easily and quickly lifted out of' supported relation to the cradle 2|. An idler roll 29 is supported by the end of the rails I4. 7
To make use of the apparatus above described, an endless web 24 is trained around both rolls l1 and 22 with the r011 11 in the position shown in Fig. 1. The web is put in place by lifting one endof each roll I! and 22 out of supported relation to its cradle and sliding the web inplace, after which each such roll is returned to supported relation with its cradle. The slack on the web 24 is located between the two rolls 22 9Claims. (01. 34155) and 29. The feed screw !6 is operated to move the cradle I5 and roll ll into the housing II] as far as the extent of the web 24 will permit, or until the cradle reaches thewall I2. If there is any slack remaining in the Web 24,'the feed screw 23is operated to move the cradle 2I-and the roll 22 to the right from the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby taking up the slack and putting the web under any desired degree of tension. The roll 22 is now rotated by any suitable means (not shown) to feed the web 24 into and out of the housing It] and through the current of hot air provided by the ducts H3. The feeding of the web 24 through the housing I0 is continued until the desired heat treatment of the web has been efiected. The feed screws both adjust the cradles and lock them in adjusted position.
In Fig. 4, two friction rolls 25 are journalled near the end of the rails t4 and one of the rolls is equipped with a, friction brake. Two pull rolls 26 are suitably supported somewhat to the 'right of the roller '25 and at least one of-the rolls 25 is positively driven by any suitable fmeans. The web 2d passes between therolls 25 around the roll I! and between the roll 26 with :the slack being'arranged intermediate the'rolls 25 and 25. The Web is trained around the roll .1! whileit is exterior of the housing I 0, after which the cradle l5 and roll H are fed into the ,housing as previously described. t
The embodiment of Fig, 5is adapted for heattreatment of a web 2d of indeterminate length. :A reel 21 supporting the web 24'; is journalled in a suitable frame and is providedwith a friction ,brake'. From the reel Z'L the web 24' passes :around the roll I l to'the pull rolls 26 from. which fit passes to atake-up reel 28 provided with drivring means (not shown).. W-ith the roll H exterior of the housing Iii, the web 24. is passed around the roll 7| 1 and between .the rolls 26 to 'the'rewin'der 28. The roll His then introduced into the housing as beforewdescribed and the .web' is drawn ofi the reel 21 and fed through the housing 10 around the roll H from which it is pulled off by the rolls 26 and delivered to the rewinder 28.
In each of the embodiments herein disclosed, most of the mechanical equipment and the entire drive mechanism remain outside the housing Ill and are not exposed to high temperatures. In
' each instance, the threading of the web around thereinto, thus resulting in heat saving. The threading of the Web around the rolls is simple and does not require the operator to enter the housing [0 nor to thread the web by hand through the housing. The roll I! need not travel the full length of the housing I0 so that the apparatus may accommodate short as well as long webs. The web may be maintained at any desired tension during its travel through the housing H1. This feature is especially advantageous whenever the proper treatment of the web requires a very small but controlled amount of tension.
It is of course understood that various modifications may be made in the apparatus above described, Without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

A device of the character described comprising iwalls forming a closed compartment having a relatively small opening in one side wall, guide means extending substantially horizontally through said small opening into said compartment, a cradle slidable on said guide means through said small opening into and .out of said compartment, a roll supported by said cradle, means exterior of said compartment for feeding a .web around said roll, means to circulate heated air through said compartment in contact with said web, and'means for locking said cradle in any given position .of said compartment.
