men strip the tiles and function on a continuous operational basis.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a construction of a press for this purpose, wherein there exists a flat table, over which molds containing the material to be compressed may be slid into position for compressing action, and after compression of such material, it may be removed by a simple sliding movement.
A third object of the invention is to provide a press for the production of tiles and the like, whereby tiles, both floor and wall, may be fabricated on a production basis.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a press for tiles which may be readily used for the forming of such articles with an ornamental face and/or ornamental conformation.
Also, this invention contemplates the production of a novel press adapted to effect the molding of articles of any desired thickness within the capacity of the press.
With the above and otherobjects in view, as will be presently apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly claimed.
The novel features that are considered characteristic of the invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claim. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like parts are indicated by like reference characters throughout, and in which:

Figure 4 Vis a perspective viewof the press. l y `In the embodiment of the invention,` as shown in the drawings, there is provided a base or standard I0, on which the whole device rests.` On the base IU is supported the hydraulic cylinder II. The body portion of this cylinder is, `of course, thick enough to withstand `thepressures necessary for producingthe output. At'the center` of the body I I, there is provided a bore I2, and this bore is continued up through .an annulus` I3 rising from the center of the body I I. At the upper `end of the annulus, there is secured by any suitable means (not shown) a closure I4 provided centrally with a packing box I5.
Mounted on the top of the annulus I3 is a table I6 having a centrally disposed opening I'I. The table IB has recesses Ia at opposite sides to enable the two operators employed in working the press to stand closer to the center of the table so that they may easily handle the molds. Fitting the opening I1 is a presser head I8 which is carried by the upper end of a piston rod IB passing through the stuiling box I5 and having at its lower end a piston 2li fitting the bore I2, and as usual, provided with proper packing rings. Surrounding the rod I9 between the piston 20 and the closure I4, is a coiled compression spring 2I, which constantly urges the piston 2Il downwardly in the bore I2. At this time, it is to be observed that when the piston is in its lowermost position, the top of the head I8 will be flush with the top of the table I 6, so that molds containing unpressed materia] can be readily slid from the table onto the pressure head. Also, it will be noted that the molds may as readily slide off the pressure head onto the table when loose on the pressure head.
Projecting from the body Il are ears 22, on which are fixed heavy bolts 23. Thesel bolts 23 extend upwardly and carry what may be termed a crown member 24, which is adjustable toward and from the table by nuts 25 on the bolts 23, the llts 23 also being adjustable relative to the ears The mold, according to the preferred form, comprises a peripheral member 25a, split at opposite sides, as at 23, and held together by clamps 21, the construction of which is obvious and essentially has no special reference to this press. Also, on the upper member 24, there is provided a die 28, which may be of any preferable form, either to provide an opening in the tile or to carry a facing member therefrom.
n one side of the device there is provided a uid inlet pipe 29 leading to the bottom of the bore I2 and from this pipe leads a duct 3u to a pressure gauge 3l, by which the pressure within the bore I2 may be controlled.
In operation, the workman on one side of the table takes a prepared mold and places it on the table over the head I8. The valve 32 is then opened to admit uid under pressure to the cylinder, which-'causes theihead .to rise and carry the mold up untilthe part l2 engages the member 28 and the material in the mold is properly compressed, preferably at four to six pounds per square inch, as evidenced by the pressure :gauge 3|. The valve 32 is now operated to bleed the cylinder so that the head I8 drops to the level of the table, whereupon the mold is :removedand the Workman at the opposite end of the table repeats the same operation.
Although a certain specific embodiment of the invention has been shown' and described, it is obvious that many modifications thereof are possible. The invention, therefore, is not tobe restricted except insofar as is necessitated :by lthe prior art' andv by the spirit ofthe appended claim.
What I claim is: y
A molding machine comprising -a base formed on its top surface with a cylinder, the upper edges of the cylinder having a vertical flange to provide a seat, a coveritted in the seat, said cover 4having a central opening, a piston in the cylinder from which extends a piston rod 'projee-ted through the opening in the cover, a table having a centrally disposed opening above the cylinder, a depending annular flange around the opening in the table, the lower edge portion of the iiange having an annular seat to engage and fit over the vertical flange on the cylinder, a pressure head on the upper end of the piston rod which head when in normal lowered position is iiush with the top of the table, a frame rising from the table including a cross bar extending across the-vertical plane of the pressure head, a die' depending from the cross bar in vertical alignment with the piston rod, a spring interposed between the top of the piston and the cover tend- 4ing to return the piston to normal position with the pressure head flush with the top of the table, a pipe to supply pressure to the bottom of the cylinder, and a pipe to exhaust the pressure from the top of the cylinder.
