7 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined can opening and spout forming tool.
It is an object of the invention to provide a tool for shearing a strip of metal from the top of a can and forming the sheared strip of metal to provide a pouring spout for dispensing the contents of the can.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a tool which performs the shearing and forming operations-simultaneously.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a tool of the above-mentioned character which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration I have shown a preferred embodilongitudinal edges of the forming member are provided with a series of saw teeth I! which serve to fold the cut metal strip from the top of the can around the cutting member when the cutting and forming members are moved into nested relation. The lower end of the cutting member 8 is beveled, as at [2, and formed along the edges of the beveled portion are a series of shearing teeth l3. The beveled portion terminates in a point 14 adapted to penetrate the top of a can to be opened. The forming member 9 at its lower end is provided with outwardly flared wings l5 having notches I6 formed therein adapted to engage the marginal bead of the can top whereby the lever 5 is iulcrumed on the edge of the can. The

In operation, the lever B is positioned perpendicular to the top of the can to be opened with the point M of the cutting member 8 in or near the center of the top depending on the size of the can. A downward pressure is applied to the knob ll forcing the point It to penetrate the can top and through action of the shearing teeth 13 a V-shaped slot is formed in the top of the can. This initial puncturing of the top forms a slot to admit air into the can. The member 8 is pushed downwardly into the can at an angle to the vertical axis of .the can which slightly raises the top soit may be clamped between the members 8 and 9, the former being disposed beneath the top and the latter above the top. Pressure is then applied to the handles 5 and 6 to tightly clamp the raised portion of the top between the members 8 and 9 and by engaging the notches iii of the wings l5 of the member 9 with the edge of the can the member is. fulcrumed for pivotal movement in an upward and outward direction. With the handles held tightly together they are swung upwardly and outwardly which tears the strip of metal clamped between the members}! and 9 from the top of the can. It will be seen as themember 8 bends the metal upward into the member 9 the teeth I! along the longitudinal edges of the member 9 facilitate the tearing of the metal from the top and as the members move into nesting relation the severed strip of metal is pressed between the two members and shaped thereby into the form of a spout which is bent to extend laterally from the edge of the can.
It is also apparent the knob I I may be applied to the end of the handle 5 and with the member 9 fulcrumed on the edge of the can the member 8 may be .forced, through the top of the can by swinging the handle 5 downwardly which applies a downward pressure on the member 8 through the pivotal connection between the members 8 and 9.
It is to be understood that the form of my in-- vention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A tool of the character described comprising a pair of pivoted handles having at one of their ends channel shaped portions for nesting engagement with each other, the channel portion of one handle having a pointed end for penetrating the top of a can, the channel portion of the other handle having teeth along its edges and ears at its free end adapted to fulcrum on the edge of the can, said channel members being movable by actuation of said handles to clamp the top of the can therebetween whereby the channel members when swung on said fulcrum tear a strip from the top and shape it to form a spout.

A tool of the character described comprising an elongated channel member, teeth along the edges of said member, means at the free end of said member adapted to fulcrum on the edge of a can, a second member pivotally connected with said first member for nesting engagement therewith having a pointed end for penetrating the top of the can, means for compressing said members together to clamp'thejtop of the can therebetween whereby the memberswhen swung on said fulcrum tear a strip from the top and shape it to form a spout.
