This invention relates to a combination thread cutting and hOldlllg device.
While I am aware that the general principle of thread holding and cutting attachments is not new in the art, I believe the-novel construction of my invention to be entirely different to that of any such device heretofore known in the art.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this class that may easily and expeditiously be applied to or removed from a spool.
Another object is to provide such a device that may cheaply and easily be manufactured.
A further object is the provision of such a device that requires a minimum of changes in the tools that are now being utilized in the manufacture of every day articles, such as thumb tacks.
Another, and important object is the elimination of the very unreliable cuts now put in the edge of the spool flange as the portion out therefrom very easily is broken off.
The above and other objects will become apparent from a reading of the specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the application of the device to a spool;
Figure 2 is a side elevation illustrating its position on a spool;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the cutter and holder;
Figure l is a side elevation thereof, and
Figure 5 is an enlarged detailed view, partly broken away, illustrating the cutting and holding element of the device.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral I0 indicates a spool having thereon a material, such as ordinary thread I l. The material could be made of wire or any other flexible substance and, the size of the device may be varied in accordance to the strength of the material and also in accordance to the size of the spool.
I have discovered that an ordinary thumb tank, or something very similar thereto, when made in conformity to the invention will serve th purpose very well. For the sake of simplicity, I will refer herein to the device as a tack having protruding from the underside I2 of the head l3 thereof a pointed shank M, the shank being of a length suitable to the spool and material with which it will be used.
In the outer periphery of the head [3 there is provided a slot 15 in which is seated the loose end l6 of the thread and, it is believed apparent, that when the thread has been pulled to the inner end I! of the slot I5 it will be held securely therein.
When it is desired to cut the thread ll the loose end U6 is removed from the slot [5, the desired length of thread unwound from the spool and replaced in the slot. A quick jerk will cause the inner end I! of the slot to sever the thread at this point, the use of scissors is thus eliminated.
Although I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In combination with a spool having a flexible strand wound thereon and provided with substantially circular ends, a holding attachment for the free end of the strand comprising a substantially flat head having a pointed shank projecting substantially perpendicularly from one side thereof and adapted to be anchored in one end of the spool for positioning the head against said end and with a portion of the head projecting outwardly from the periphery of the spool end, said head having an arcuate slot formed therein both sides of which are disposed eccentrically of the axis of the shank, said head having a recessed peripheral portion into which one end of the slot opens and which is spaced outwardly from the periphery of said spool end, and an intermediate portion of the slot being disposed diagonally across a portion of the periphery of said spool end to receive a portion of the strand to be engaged and clamped between the outer edge of the slot and the periphery of the spool end.
