2 Claims. (01. 2 2s) The present invention relates to a corset, and more particularl to a corset of the foundation type, generally worn by women to confine and outline the body and to bring it into sharper relief.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a foundation garment of the character described which provides improved support to the wearers back.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a foundation garment of the character described which provides improved confinement, outlining and support of the abdominal portion of the wearers body.

It is also an object of the present invention to provide a foundation garment of the character described which snugly embraces the hip of the wearer and accentuates its outline, in its natural form or through the addition of artificial padding which it receives and holds in an unobtrusive manner, to thus bring the hips into greater relief, in accordance with the prevailing mode.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a garment of the character described which fits smoothly and closely about the body, without disclosing its outline through the outer garments worn thereover.

It'is a still further object of the present invention to provide a foundation garment of the character described in which the tendency of the same to creep upwardly on the body, which generally provokes an uncomfortable feeling and the unattractive necessity for pulling it down through tugging at the outer clothing, is reduced to a minimum.

The foregoing and other advantages and superiorities of the foundation garment or corset of the present invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing and from the description following. It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, to make the principles and practice of the invention more readily comprehensible, and without any intent of limiting the invention to the specific details therein shown.

Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a corset of the present invention, shown in closed position, as it would be worn on the body;

Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same;

Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the same; and

Fig. 4 is a plan view of a pattem of the various gores and fabric elements for forming the corset of the present invention, shown in the arrangement in which they are sewn together.

Referring more specifically to the accompany ing drawings, the corset of the present invention comprises a rear section or back, generally desig nated as I, and a pair of side sections, generally designated as I l both of similar construction and each attached to one side of the back section, H), which, together, comprise the sides and front of the garment.

The back, I0, may, preferably, be comprised of a pluralit of stitched together, vertically disposed gores, l2, each formed of a laterally elastic material or webbing. The number of gores may be varied as desired. Preferably, all or most of the gores, I2, may be of hour-glass shape, being wider at their ends and tapering towards a point intermediate their ends, so that when they are stitched together by the stitches, l3, an accentuated, restricted waistline, I4, is formed.

Each of the sections, H, may be formed of the non-elastic fabric conventionally used in the construction of garments of the general character described, and may comprise a central panel, consisting of a pair of fabric elements, each tapering from its upper edge toward the waistline, l4, and each having its lower portion, below the waistline, [4, provided with a slightly arcuate inneredge; 11, facing the corresponding edge of the companion element, l5, and a curved, substantially circular outer edge, 18, so that when the two elements 15 are sewn together along their facing edges, 11, the lower portion of the central panel, below the waistline, I4, is cupped in a manner which will conform to the curvature of the forward hip portion of the body to snugly embrace the same when it is naturally endowed or to receive a padding, 20, which will provide artificial accentuation thereof, and isprovided with a rounded bottom.

22 and 23 surrounds the central panel. The element 22 may be secured to the innermost of the elements l5 and may serve to connect the section II to the back, Ill. The element 23 is secured to the outermost of the elements, l5, and may serve as a connecting piece to close the garment about the body.

The element, 22, may also taper inwardly from its upper edge toward the waistline, l4; its lower portion being hooked, or curved, to conform to the curvature of the bottom of the innermost of the elements I5.

Flexible steel stiffening bars or bones, 21, of the type conventionally used for the purpose, may be inserted in the facing edges of the elements 23 of the sections ll. One of the bars, 21, may be provided with the projecting pins, 28 and the other with the extending ears, 29, which are adapted to fit over the pins, 28, to constitute the fastening means for the garment.

It will be readily apparent that the foundation garment of the present invention, described above, provides an improved and superior fit over and confinement of the body; that the multigored, laterally elastic construction of the garment back provides improved and firmer support for the back of the body; that the shape of the various gores and elements provide a more sharply defined and accentuated waistline, in accord ance with the prevailing mode; that the cupping of the lower part of the side sections of the garment cause it to cling confiningly and closely to the hips of the wearer, serving both to bring out their outline more sharply or to receive artificial padding which will create an accentuated outline therefor, as well as to embrace the lower, thinner portion of' the hip and thus prevent the creepin of the garment upwardly on the body.

This completes the description of the corset of the present invention. It will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous variations and modifications thereof may be While the gores, I2, of the back, 10,, are, prefmade, in accordance with the principles of the invention hereinabove set forth and without the use of any inventive ingenuity. I desire, therefore, to be protected for any and all such modifications and variations that may be made within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims hereto appended.

What I claim is:

1. A garment of the character described, comprising a back section consisting of a plurality of elongated gores having vertical side edges tapering inwardly from their ends and connected to one another by their said side edges and defining a waistline at their narrowest point, and a side and front section of greater length than said back section connected to the back section along each side edge thereof, each of said side and front sections comprising a central portion consisting of a pair of fabric elements each substantially of the same length as said gores and arranged with a vertical side edge of one element facing a corresponding vertical side edge of the other element, each of said elements having straight edged upper sections tapering inwardly toward the waistline and lower sections of relatively greater width and having curved edges, the curvature of their facing edges being lesser than the curvature of their far edges, said far edges curving along substantially the entire bottom of the central portion fabric element, said elements connected to one another: by their facing edges, and a pair of marginal elements secured to the sides and bottom of said central portions, said marginal elements having curved bottom portions each extending under one of said central elements, said marginal elements having their facing edges cut at a slant and connected to one another.

2.- The garment of claim 1 wherein the said back gores are for-med of a laterally elastic fabric.
