ODOMETER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,064, dated December 20, 1881.
A pplication filed August 27, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN O. PERKINS, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ()dometers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanyingdraw ings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to odometers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My invention consists more'particularly in the improved means, to be hereinafter described, of operating an odometer by electromagnetism, so as to prevent tampering with the device when applied to hacks, livery-carriages, or other vehicles.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a general view, in perspective, of the device as applied to a vehicle. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the axle and hub. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view, taken through the hub and axle, illustrating the circuit-breaker. Fig. 4 is a front view of the registering mechanism, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the latter.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
A in the drawings refers to the axle, B to the spindle, and G to one of the hubs of the vehicle to which my invention is appied.
D is a flanged collar, of brass or other suitable materia fitted loosely upon the inner end of the hub, and having an interiorringor packing, E, of wood or other suitable non-conducting material. Within the said ring Eis fitted a ring, F, of iron, fastened to the hub, partly inclosed by a ring, G, of non-conducting material, having a slot, H, which extends over nearly its entire periphery.
Secured to the wooden ring E are a pair of conducting-springs I, having rollers J, which travel upon the rings F G. The ends of the springs l are connected by wires K K, respect- .is attached.

i-vely, with one pole of a suitably constructed and located battery, L, and with the electromagnet of the registering device, to be hereinafter described, the said wires passingthrough a tube, M, extending inward from the collar D, and passing through the prongs N of a brass fork, 0, secured to the under side of the axle by means of the usual axle-clip, which prevents the collar D from revolving with the hub, and consequently operates the circuit-breaking mechanism.
P is the registering mechanism, which may be arranged at any desired point inside or outside the vehicle, and which consists of aset of gear-wheels arranged to engage each other, and provided, over the face of a suitable dial, with hands Q, which indicate in revolutions miles and tens of miles, or in any other units and multiples, the number of the revolutions of the wheel, and consequently the distance traveled by the vehicle to which the invention The said registering mechanism is actuated by a pawl-lever, R, engaging the first wheel in the train, and operated by the electro-magnet S, which is inclosed in the casing, and connected by a wire, T, with one of the poles 'of battery L, the operation taking place each time the circuit is made or completed by the revolution of the vehicle-wheel, as above described. Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, nith the hub having iron collar F and non-conducting band G, having slot H, of the stationary flanged band D, having wooden ring E,carryingconducting-springs l 1, connected respectively to one pole of a battery and to the electro-magnet of a registering device, whichlatter is also connected to the other pole of said battery, as set forth.
