TICKET CANCELER AND REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,022, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed July 11, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE I. BLoUN'r, of Cambridge, Middlesex county, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fare-Registers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to fare and ticket registers of that class in which an alarm is sounded and a registering mechanism moved when each fare is taken, and at the same time the ticket received or another registering-strip of paper or card-board is defaced or marked.
In apparatus of this kind the ticket or registering-strip has usually been marked or defaced by the action of a punch removing a portion of the said ticket, and it is possible by this method to operate upon more than one ticket at a single movement of the punch, by which a single blow upon the alarm-bell is given.
My invention has for its object to enable the ticket to be marked by the action of type, it being impossible to act upon or imprint more than one surface at each operation, and I propose to provide changeable type, in order that the date upon which a fare is received may be marked upon it, together with a characteristic mark of the company by which the fare is received, such marks being especially important in connection with transfer-checks, now largely in use, which are intended to be used for a continuous ride upon two different lines or in different cars. Such checks are marked with the date upon which they are issued upon the pay ment of the fare for the first portion of the ride, and upon which date only they are valid for the second portion of the ride. It is also desirable in some cities, where the tickets of several different lines are received upon each of the said lines and afterward exchanged, to impress upon the ticket the mark of the company by which it is received.

The invention also consists in details of construction of the various parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, the said construction, among other things, insuring a complete movement of the operating-lever in each direction before its effective movement in the other direction can be made.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved registering apparatus, showing the printing andalarm-operatin g mechanism in their normal position, a part of the inclosing frame-work being removed; Fig. 2, a similar view, showing the parts in the position assumed at the end of the operation of impressing a ticket; Fig. 3, a view of the opposite side of the punch, showing the registering mechanism; Fig.4, a detail showing a portion of the said registering mechanism detached; Fig. 5, a detail of the printing-die detached, showing the opposite side to that seen in Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 6, a modification to be referred to.
The working parts of the punch are inclosed in a case or frame-work, a, and are operated by the movement of the lever I), pivoted at 2 upon the said frame-work, which is of conven ient form to be held in the hand of the operator. The lever b is provided with n. projecting block, b, that passes through an opening made to fit it accurately in the case a, and a retracting-spring, b throws the said lever outward after it has been positively pressed inward toward the case a by the operator, and
normally retains it in the position shown in Fig. 1, the outward movement being limited by the engagement of a small projecting stud, m, with the case a.
A bellhammer, e, pivoted at 3 upon the case a, in position to act upon the inside of a bell, f, mounted on a stem,f, and inclosed in a covering,f (see Fig. 6,) is provided with an arm, 6, having a finger, 4, which is engaged by the projection 5 of its operating-pawl c, pivoted at 6 upon the portion 1) of the lever b, and pressed by a spring, 0, into engagement with the said arm 6, so that when the lever b is depressed, as shown in Fig. 2, the belLhammer c is turned on its pivot until just at the end of the move ment of the said lever a tripping-projection, 0, acts upon the pawl c to turn it on its pivot 6 and disengage the projections 4 and 5, allowing the bell-hammer evto return to the position shown in Fig. 1, under the action of the spring 6 and strike a blow upon the bell f.
The portion 1) of the lever b is provided with a series of ratchet-teeth, 7, which are engaged by the retaining-pawl d as the said lever is depressed, to prevent the return movement of the said lever at any time before the bell-hammer eis released to strike the bell, as just described, when its arm 0 engages the end of the pawl d, overcoming its spring d and holding it out of engagement with the teeth 7 until the lever b has been restored to its normal position by the action of the spring b and the projection 5 of the bell-operatin g pawl c has passed over and engaged the projection 4 of the bell-hammer arm 6.
The type block or printing-die g is pivoted upon a stud, g, mounted on a carriage, g slotted to receive a guide, 9 fixed upon the case a and pressed toward the portion b of the lever b by the spring the backward movement of the said carriage 9 being limited by engagement with the frame a before the lever 12 has completed its backward movement, as shown in Fig. 1.
The type-block g is provided with a hole, 8, (see Fig. 5, and dotted lines, Fig. 1,) to receive a link. h, connected with the portion b of the lever I), so that when the said carriage has completed its backward movement under the action of the spring 9 the lever b, in its further backward movement, will, by the link h, rotate the said block g upon the stud g to bring the type 9 against the inking pad mounted in a block, g pivoted at 9, and operated upon by the spring 9 to turn it into the position shown in Fig. 2, except when a projection, 10, is engaged by the projection 12 on the block 9, as shown in Fig. 1, to thus rock the said inking-pad over the type in the last part of the backward movement of the lever I).
The case or main portion at of the punch is provided with a slot, 13, in which the ticket or slip to be marked is inserted; and when the lever b is depressed the link h first turns the block g on the stud g to bring the type at right angles to the slot 13, after which the portion b engages a projection, 9 upon the carriage g and moves the block g, with its type 9 directly down upon the ticket or slip inserted in the notch 13. A spring, g connected with the portion 1) of the lever, engages the projection g of the carriage, so as to allow a slight yielding of the type-block to accommodate strips of different thicknesses.
' The registering mechanism shown in Figs. at and 5 consists of a ratchet-wheel, i, pivoted at '12 upon the case a, and operated by an actuating-pawl, k, pivoted at 14 on the portion b of the lever 11, the projection 15 of the said pawl coming into engagement with one of the;
teeth of Y the ratchet-wheel i and rotating it for the distance of one tooth in the last part of the movement of the said lever. A retainingpawl, Z, prevents backward rotation of the wheel 2', and is so arranged as to prevent the actuating-pawl it from engaging the said wheel until the last part of the movement of the lever 1). A second ratchet-wheel, m, provided with a retaining-pawl, m, is caused to rotate for the space of one tooth at each complete rotation of the wheel 11 by the following connecting mechanism: An arm, n, is pivoted to oscillate upon the axis of the wheel m, and is provided with a pawl, 0, (see Fig. 4,) at its under side, which engages the teeth of the wheel m. The arm n is provided with a slot, 15, embracing the pivot t" of the wheel '5 and limiting the movement of the arm in each direction to an amount sufficient to pass the pawl 0 over one tooth of the wheel on, and then rotate the said wheel for the distance of onetooth. A pin, 10, on the under side of the wheel i, engages shoulders at n on the under side of the arm n to give it its oscillating movement as the said wheel t rotates, as shown in Fig. 5. The pinp is shown in Fig. at as engaged with the shoulder a to swing the arm n in the direction of the arrow and cause it, by its pawl 0, to move the wheel at for the space of one tooth, after which the said arm n will remain stationary in the further movement of the wheel tuntil the pin 11 engages the arm n and moves it back, causing the pawl 0 to pass over and engage a new tooth on the wheel m, now held by its retaining-pawl m, ready to move it forward again when the pin 19 reaches the shoulder a in completing the rotation of the wheel 1..
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the car riage g of the type-die g is pivoted at 16 and guided at 17, thus having an oscillating instead of a sliding movement, it being operated in the same manner, as hereinbefore described,by the lever b to depress the type-block g.
I claim l-. In a fare-registering apparatus, the main portion or case inclosing the working parts, and the actuating-lever pivoted thereon, combined with a type-block and bell-hammer and registering mechanism, all operated by the movement of the said actuating-lever, whereby a mark is imprinted on one surface of a ticket or slip and an alarm given at each operation of the lever, and the number of said operations is indicated, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the actuating-lever of a fare-register, of the pivoted type-block and its carriage and the inking-pad and in termediate mechanism between the said lever, type-block, and carriage, whereby in the return movement of the lever, after a fare has been registered, the type-block is removed from the ticket or slip imprinted thereby and the type are brought against the inking-pad, substantially as described.

and a retaining-pawl to engage them in the positive movement of the said lever, combined with the bell-hammer and its actuating-pawl, connected with the said lever, and the tripping device to positively disengage it from the bellhammer at the end of the positive movement of the lever, the said bell-hammerbeing adapt- .ed, when thus released by its actuating-pawl,
to strike the bell and disengage the retainingpawl from the said ratchet-teeth of the actuating-lever to permit the return movement thereof, all arranged and to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a registering device for indicating a number of independent movements, a ratchet- Wheel and actuating-pawl therefor, combined second ratchet-wheel is caused to move for the space of one tooth at each complete rotation of the first ratchet wheel, substantially as described.
