Description

May 23; 1950 F. s. SCHADE VISIBLE INDEX TRAY STAND Filed June 13, 1946 INVENTOR fjmw Jim/4:7 Jamm:
B I i Patented May 23, 1950 VISIBLE INDEX TRAY STAND Frank Stanley Schade, Holyoke, Mass., assignor to National Blank Book Company, Holyoke, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application June 13, 1946, Serial No. 676,581
2 Claims- (CL 129- 1) This invention relates to a tray stand for record keeping devices.
An object is to provide for the convenient and ready handling of visible indexes and trays of records, and to construct a stand which may be used with any size tray with equal efiiciency and under various circumstances.
A great variety of ofiice and accounting records are in daily use in business establishments. Many records are constantly referred to and handled. The containers for these records are often of different sizes and dimensions. The purpose of the stand as ofiice equipment is to facilitate the use and handling of such containers.
The construction of the present invention while in one sense particularly adaptable for the handling of a particular type of visible index is characterized by providing also for the same utility in connection with many other types and sizes of trays in which records may be contained in the same ofiice.
The features of the visible index tray stand will be explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the stand;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of an adapter for use with the stand;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of the top of the stand with a particular visible index in position on the stand.
A stand, as shown in perspective view of Fig. 1, is provided with a top I having legs 2 formed of angle irons with a lower shelf 3. Casters 4 are fitted on legs 2 which are braced by straps 6 and 6. As above stated the table top I is adapted to receive and hold various forms of sheet record holding equipment as an adapter 1 or a binder 8 as will be described. In the top surface I, a longitudinal recessed portion 9 is provided. Both sidewalls of the recess are slotted as at it and a circular portion II is cut in the bottom of the recess. By this construction a recess is provided for the base of a visible index unit such as is designated generally by numeral 8 in Fig. 3. This unit is described in my copend-- ing application, Serial No. 586,127, filed April 2, 1945, now Patent No. 2,433,788, granted December 30, 1947. It is provided with a stand bar I! (Fig. 3) pivoted to swing from a lengthwise position when the unit is put in the recess to a crosswise position on the under surface of the base after the unit is put on its stand. As shown in Fig. 3, the bar l2 may be reached through circular portion II to swing the bar in slots l0 and lock the visible index unit 8 in the recess of the stand. It is a portable unit, handles l3 being hinged on the side portions.
An index unit as 8 is generally stored on filing shelves or in storage cabinets. The stand permits their handy and convenient use for ready reference or recording purposes.
As other visible index units, trays of assembled records, and loose leaf containers of many types are of various and different dimensions from that shown in the illustration of Fig. 3, I have provided for various size record container units by supplying retaining units such as adapter 1 shown in Fig. 2. A retaining plate [4 with downwardly turned flange strips I5, is adapted to fit in the sides of recess 9 in the stand to hold any such tray and its contents with a snug fit on the top of the stand. The adapter has upstanding sidewalls l6 made to hold a particular size of visible index box or container in position on the stand. As many adapters of diiferent dimensions as are needed can be provided to adapt the stand for its use with any particular size of tray unit. The stand is thus adapted for similar ready utility for a great variety of index trays, boxes or other similar containers.
Having disclosed my invention, I claim:
1. In apparatus for handling record sheets a work stand having a rectangular platform at the top, a shallow recess in said platform with a length substantially equal to the length of the platform and a width substantially less than that of the platform, said recess having side walls provided with complementary slots and a bottom wall provided with an opening therein between the slots of said side walls, said recess being adapted to receive record sheet holding equipment having shallow walled portions matching said recess for deposit therein in fitting relation and for securing said equipment against longitudinal and lateral movement with respect to said platform, said bottom opening affording access to the undersurface of the sheet holding equipment and said slots being adapted to receive a latching means as may be fitted on such undersurface.
2. In apparatus for handling record sheets a work stand having a rectangular platform at the top, a shallow recess in said platform provided with sidewalls and a bottom wall, and a binder to hold a heavy set of record sheets to rest on the stand for working on them, said binder having a box-like pack portion matching said recess and receivable therein in fitting relation and a strap latch pivotally mounted on said back portion, said sidewalls having complementary 3 slots and an opening in said bottom wall whereby the binder may be locked and unlocked on the stand with its back portion seated in the recess by manually swinging the ends of said strap latch into and out of engagement in the slots of the sidewall portions through the opening in said bottognflwalln v STAN EY 1 REFERENCES CITED file of this patent:
