Description

A. G. HEBERT HEATING DEVICE May 9, i950 Filed Aug. 12, 1947 JNVENTOR. Q QQ/eff Patented May 9, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to heating apparatus, and more particularly to a heating attachment for use in conjunction with the hot water heater of a kitchen range.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved heating unit adapted to be employed in conjunction with a conventional water heater, said heating unit being very simple in construction, easy to install and economical in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved air heating and air circulating attachment adapted to be installed in the hot water line of a water heating system, said attachment being inexpensive to manufacture, compact in size, and neat in appearance.
Further objects and advantages of the inven tion will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a conventional hot water heating system showing an air heating unit constructed in accordance with the present invention installed in the hot water line of the system.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional detail view taken through the air heating unit of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, I I designates a conventional kitchen range. Designated at I2 is a hot water boiler. The water heating coil 3 is mounted in the fire chamber of the range The cold water inlet pipe is shown at |4 and is connected to the water supply.
Connected between the hot water outlet pipe I5 from heater coil I3 and the hot water inlet pipe IB of boiler I2 is the air heater said heater comprising a cylindrical shell I8 secured to the pipes l5 and I6 and provided at its ends with air screens I9 and 20. Mounted in the shell I8 is the radiator coil 2|, the ends of coil 2| being connected to the respective hot water pipes I5 and I6 so that the hot water from heater coil I3 circulates through the radiator coil 2|. Supported in semi-circular collar brackets 22, 22 secured to one end of shell I8 by respective arms 23, 23 carried by said brackets is an electric motor 24, said motor being clamped in said collar brackets and being substantially coaxial with shell |8. Secured on the motor shaft is a propeller 25. When motor 24 is energized, propeller 25 blows a current of air through the intake screen I9 and through the radiator coil 2|, the air being heated by contact with the coil 2| and emerging from the shell I8 at the outlet screen 20. The heated air thus is circulated through the room by the draft created by the fan propeller 25.
The unit above described is very economical in operation in that it utilizes heat which would otherwise be retained in the water in boiler I2 even when the water is not used, and circulates heated air through the room whereby the room is rapidly warmed and is maintained at a comfortable temperature as long as the range is in operation or as long as the water in the hot water line is at an elevated temperature.
While a specic embodiment of a heating apparatus adapted to be attached in a conventional water heating system has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as dened by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a kitchen range and associated hot water tank, said range having an internal water heating coil having an external pipe leading directlsr to said tank, of a radiator coil connected between the ends of said external pipe intermediate said range and said tank and exposed to the atmosphere of the space in which said range and tank are located, a tubular heat concentrating and guiding housing surrounding said radiator coil and supportably mounted on said external pipe, and a fan mounted at one end of said housing for moving air from said space through said housing in contact with said radiator coil.
2. The combination with a kitchen range and associated hot water tank, said range having an internal water heating coil having an external pipe leading directly to said tank, of a radiator coil connected between the ends of said external pipe intermediate said range and said tank and exposed to the atmosphere of the space in which said range and tank are located, a tubular heat concentrating and guiding housing surrounding said radiator coil and supportably mounted on said external pipe, and a fan mounted at one end of said housing for moving air from said space through said housing in contact with said radiator coil, said radiator coil being of substantially the same diameter as said external pipe, said radiator coil and said external pipe forming a continuous conduit of substantially uniform diameter.
3. The combination with a kitchen range and 3 associated hot water tank, said range having an internal water heating coil having an external pipe leading directly to said tank, of a radiator coil connected between the ends of said external pipe intermediate said range and said tank and exposed to the atmosphere of the space in which said range and tank are located, a tubular heat concentrating and guiding housing surrounding said radiator coil and supportably mounted on said external pipe, and a fan mounted at one end of said housing for moving air from said space through said housing in contact with saidv radiator coil, said radiator coil comprising a plurality of axially arranged convolutions and said tubular housing concentrically surrounding said convolutions.
