This invention relates to eye shades and shields and aims to provide novel, useful and practical improvements in a combination eye shade and shield which is readily adjustable to suit the convenience and needs of the wearer to shade and to shield his eyes from glare from both the front and the sides as well as from above.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a combination eye shade and shield which is adapted to be worn in the manner of a pair of spectacles, and which is simple and eificient in construction and operation and inexpensive in cost of manufacture.

The above as Well as additional objects will become apparent in the following description, wherein characters of reference refer to likenumbered parts in the accompanying drawing. It is to be noted that the drawing is intended solely for the purpose of illustration and that it is therefore neither desired nor intended that the invention be limited necessarily to any or all of the exact details of construction shown excepting insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention,

Referring briefly to the drawing, Fig. l is a plan view of the combination eye shade and shield.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l0 indicates each of a pair of side arms similar to those of common spectacles, and the numeral I l a front or bridge member having the side arms l0 hingedly attached to the extremities thereof. An eye shade l2, which may be bowed as indicated in the several views and which may be made of any suitable material such as, by way of example, a transparent colored plastic material of the cellulose acetate class, is provided with spaced upwardly extending cars 13 having aligned openings I la therethrough.

The bridge member ll comprises a central section l4 and two end sections l5 spaced therefrom, and rods or the like it whose extremities are imbedded in the end sections l5 and the central section M. The wings or ears [3 are mounted on the rods It by passing the latter through the ear openings I ia.

Side wings ll are pivoted by means of hinges l8 to the side edges of the shade i2, having substantially the outline of a sector of a circle having one edge 20 arcuate. From the arcuate edge of each wing ll an outward and upward extension 2|, forming a trough 22, extends. Fixed to and depending from the forward end of each side arm I0, is a similar wing l9 having a similar arcuate edge 23 which registers slidably in the trough 22 of the projection 2!. The wings I"! and I9 are made of the same or a similar material, as the shade 12. The end members id of the bridge member I l have the arms Ill hinged thereto, at 24.

In use, the article may be used as an eye shade by swinging the shade i2 upward into, for example, the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 2, in which position the wings ll are pulled out with the shade so that the eyes are shaded from the sides as well as from above. The shade l2 may be positioned anywhere between the two extreme positions shown in Fig. 2, being maintained frictionally in any such position. To use the article in the manner of sun glasses, the shade i2 may be pushed down to or near the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. In any position between the said extremes the eyes are shaded from the sides, as is apparent. A nose piece 25 is provided fixed to the central section M of the bridge member H.

The combination article may also be used without the side arms ID, by cutting off the latter at the point Where the fixed Wings l9 begin, as is also apparent.

Obviously, modification in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.

I claim:

1. A device of the class described comprising a bridge, members hingedly secured to the ends of the bridge on an axis substantially normal to the bridge, an eye shade having one edge thereof pivotally mounted on said bridge, said members having side wings extending downward therefrom, said eye shade having additional side wings hinged to the end edges of said eye shade, and

means at each end of the bridge slidably interlocking one of said first-named side wings and the adjacent of said additional side wings and constraining the same to mutually slidable movement in parallel adjacent planes.

2. The device set forth in claim 1, said one of said first-named wings and said adjacent of said additional wings having arcuate edges of constant curvature the center of which lies in the axis of pivotal mounting of said eye shade, said means comprising an upturned extension on the said arcuate edge of either of said side wings at one end of the bridge thereby forming an arcuate trough, the said arcuate edge of the other of said side wings at said one end of the bridge registering slidably in said trough.
